Very disappointing picture quality and reminds me of FUNimation's DBZ Season BDs but still not as bad. This was the one thing I was interested and they killed it.
Thanks Toei Animation!

Everyone looks so green, like they are sick or something
I don't remember the former Kai episodes having this greenish hue, but other than that, I think they did a decent job with the cropping.

I think it looks fine. Certainly better than Funimation's remaster.

I like the colors I think they did a good job especially during scenes where the dragon box version had a pink tint.garnetjester wrote:Everyone looks so green, like they are sick or somethingI don't remember the former Kai episodes having this greenish hue, but other than that, I think they did a decent job with the cropping.

Re: Buu Saga Kai
I've always felt that, in many shots of the Dragon Box footage, the skin of the characters looked a little too pink...almost like the characters got sunburned. So I'm glad that was at least taken care of in the Kai footage. I'm still not digging the green tint, though.
A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

Re: Buu Saga Kai
I definitely notice the green tint now, but other than that, the footage looks fairly well done. It's definitely a step up from the current terrible Funimation remaster and looks cleaner than previous footage without seeming too washed out.

When you say Funimation, your referring to their recent season sets correct?penguintruth wrote:I definitely notice the green tint now, but other than that, the footage looks fairly well done. Still looks phenomenal to me, compared to before that is.
Anyway, shouldn't this technically be episode 99? How come it says Episode 100 on the main site?

James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.
Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

(I also preferred the DBoxes to the Level Sets...)

On the pink tint, the heavy-pink bits seem to be the ones that look best in the new remaster, anything lighter gets the sickly green.
The greater sharpness over old Kai is much appreciated. Makes the grain removal much more appreciable. How does Kai do that? It's smoothed to virtually nothing the same way Funimation's grain-wiped releases are but without the quality loss.
I mean, what the frig is this but (ugly) color modification? Worst the old Kai did was brighten colors!qjz123 wrote:Here's comparisons of the screenshots you posted vs the dragon boxes

Actually, I have a direct transport stream from the TV airing and it really is that sharpened. Random shot from it.AjayLikesGaming wrote:Compressed TV shots that may well be filtered aren't really a great indication despite me agreeing that it isn't the greatest remaster in the world. It's nothing like the Season Blu-Rays though. The art is actually solid and backgrounds aren't smudgy at all.
But yeah, check out the comparison between the Blu-Ray and what we saw on the TV with the older episodes of Kai. http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/69415
Whoever uploaded the raw sharpened the ever loving shit out of the TV rip and couldn't compress to save their lives. With the exception of those in Japan, we're all relying on streams and compressed TV rips from not the most reputable sources.
Even with a source that doesn't sharpen like crazy, there's still a difference. http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/69413

Re: Buu Saga Kai
I love the lyrics for the OP and ED. OP is very Cha-La Head Cha-La-ish. Especially "compare the size of our dreams", reminding me of "the emptier your head is, the more room there is to pack with dreams" (kids, remember to be as stupid as possible to have dreams).
