A world without Dragon Ball is just boring.

Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion
Funimation didn't announced anything new with Super at Otakon. I feel like Super can air on Toonami next year if they have Super and Kai on the same time block (12:00 AM - 12:30 AM and 12:30 - 1 AM). The series ended 12 years ago, it's not like they have to worry about spoilers while having Super air alongside Kai. Besides if Super comes out a year or two late, it will still sell well. GT came out 7 years after it first aired in Japan and it still did just fine. Kai and BOG came out in the US a year after they came out in Japan and still did just fine.

Except no one knew about GT. At least, not most people. That was an entirely different era. Kids couldn't go online and find every episode of a show before it airs on TV in the US. We live in an entirely different era now. If FUNimation doesn't hop on this now, it's hype /will/ deteriorate.Hellspawn28 wrote:Funimation didn't announced anything new with Super at Otakon. Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion
GT had bootleg fan subs and people could have downloaded fan subs on the web before 2003. Not to mention magazines like Beckett had a lot of GT and even spoiled a lot of things too. Sure the Internet back then was different now, but privacy always existed. As I mention before that Kai and BOG been on the web a year before they got officially released in the US and yet they did fine. It's new Dragon Ball and casuals who don't follow the series on the web super close like we do will still buy it. Dragon Ball will always sell well despite privacy.

You can't seriously be comparing the two. The amount of people who knew and owned those pirated GT VHS tapes with fansubs, and the amount of people who can just do a Google search and find every episode these days, is a huge difference. Most kids and people back in the day had to wait to watch GT. But not these days. I can find episodes from DB Super within days English Subtitled. I don't need Toonami anymore. TV has quite frankly been ruined by the internet. Anyone can find anything now. That's why in order for it to remain relevant, they need to release is ASAP. Waiting 2 years, everyone will have got tired of waiting and already watched every episode subbed.Hellspawn28 wrote:GT had bootleg fan subs and people could have downloaded fan subs on the web before 2003. Yeah, there's no way to compare.FutureGohanSSJ2 wrote:You can't seriously be comparing the two. In the 90's and up to the early 2000's you had to really fight for it to put your hands on a full series like GT, let alone subtitled. Online distribution of fansubs existed before BitTorrent became popular, but they were few and much harder to come across, video quality wasn't great, internet was slower...it was an entirely different world. Now you can watch anything anytime, legally or not, in HD and doing pretty much no effort whatsoever.
Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion
We a have an entire thread that's hundreds of pages long, talking, in depth, about each episode that comes out, before it has been made legally accessible to the majority of the commenters...
Let's be real, the closest thing you got to this in the pre GT release was "did you hear there's a golden ape thing called super Saiyan 4 in the new drsgonball series in Japan?"
"No way! Really!?"
"Yeah, and vegeta's a bad guy for some reason, but he's also a baby. Oh, and Goku's a kid."
"Wait, what?"

Before FUNImation released it the entire series was available online, and it was easy to obtain in the form of VHS fansubs as well.White Oni wrote:We a have an entire thread that's hundreds of pages long, talking, in depth, about each episode that comes out, before it has been made legally accessible to the majority of the commenters...

This is the same circular argument:UpFromTheSkies wrote:Before FUNImation released it the entire series was available online, and it was easy to obtain in the form of VHS fansubs as well.
Being able to buy fansub VHS tapes 15-20 years ago (and/or 20 MB RealVideo files of episodes) is nowhere near the ubiquitous state-of-being of scanlation and digisub material in today's world. There is no comparison. You cannot make a comparison. You are unable to make a comparison. Comparisons cannot be made. There is a lack of comparisons to form.

Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion
I disagree with this bit. BoG came out a year and a bit before FUNi licensed it and that did not stop BoG being a succes and infact it still sells pretty well today, MangaUK's Collectors Edition of it went out of print pretty quick too. I think you are under estimating how big a draw the Dub actually is, a lot of folks here like to own things legally so I am sure offical subs will be a draw for them too. Furthermore DBZ is avaliable online in both Sub and Dub form but that didn't stop FUNi's latest Blu-ray sets last year selling really well.FutureGohanSSJ2 wrote:You can't seriously be comparing the two. I'm not making an argument for anything, I'm just explaining the way it was. Maybe you weren't one of the people in the know back then, but there were also 150mb HQ RM videos (well, HQ for the 90's) and VCD's available as well, which were roughly 250 mb an episode. Episodes weren't available instantly after they aired in Japan like they are now, it took a few weeks to spread around (a VCD episode would take almost a week to download over dial-up), but they were out there.VegettoEX wrote:This is the same circular argument:UpFromTheSkies wrote:Before FUNImation released it the entire series was available online, and it was easy to obtain in the form of VHS fansubs as well.

Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion
I lived through and ran this website during that whole time span. I know what was available and when. Trust me
.
I don't see the point in explaining the timeframe(s) and situation(s) any further, though. Again, you cannot draw any worthwhile conclusions from comparing them. The context and worldviews surrounding it all was/is just too different.

I'm good with it being 10 if that's where it ends. I wasn't expecting it to be any longer than that anyway.
On hiatus.
