Yeah, I know what you mean. I watch One Piece straight after Super, and knowing that they were going into Zou stuff, I was expecting something dramatic for Kaido - but it just made what we got for the culmination of the U6 Arc in Super feel even more underwhelming.Ajay wrote:
I just watched last night's One Piece which features a similarly important character reveal. Of course that gets an incredible Shida cut to do it justice.
The difference between the two productions really is astounding.

I wonder why they didn't throw a bunch more animators onto the episode for the summoning.
I'm really starting to feel that the main issue now is everything before animation and the animation side of things can't improve anymore until they get that sorted out.

I think there's some truth in that. If I were to posit a guess, I'd say that a sequence like the Zarama summoning went wrong at a very early stage. There was, most likely, more or less no detail in the storyboarding whatsoever. The whole thing smacks of being a composite of half-cocked ideas and directionless guesswork.
I mean, just consider the composition of the sequence on the whole - it's a total hodgepodge. There's a couple of snippets that have clearly been animated with some level of fore-planing, but those intermediary shots with all of the static assets, digital zooms, and point-to-point transitions were probably just uninspired off-the-cuff suturings by overworked minutemen.
That sounds pretty damning, doesn't it? In my defense, it's a bank holiday Sunday and I'm quite hungover.

I cringed so much during Super Shenlong's reveal. Fucking terrible and what a shame, he's so badass looking.

What I mean is I'm thinking that by the time a storyboard is done for an episode they only have a little bit of time to animate the episode, this would also explain why Toma is working with other supervisors instead of doing his own episodes, basically adding anymore to the rotation would have no benefit because they wouldn't have anything to work on. If true then they definitely need to start trying to build up a buffer or scripts and storyboards. Hopefully they can work on that in the interim stuff before the next arc, which I wouldn't be surprised if that didn't start until July.Blade wrote:I think there's some truth in that. Kakudou Hiroyuki storyboarded Episode #41. He's been storyboarding a ton of different episodes for various series lately due to his speed. Whatever was in his storyboarded doesn't necessarily have to be reflected in by the final product. Things can change during the layout and key animation process due to a lack of time, after all.
I won't be surprised if a lot of Toei Animation talent leaves the studio after this series ends. With the way Morishita Kouzou and Kidou Atsushi have screwed over the entire production staff it's a real wonder Hatano Morio even agreed to become series director.

WHOOOO that summoning doe.
The entire time, I'm thinking wed get some bad-ass 2d/3d CGI hybrid that makes the animation look impressive, nope! we get awkward looking camera effects and stills galore.
This is one of those times when some really good CGI would have done justice.
What pisses me off even more is Toei has worked on Yugioh (season 0, Duel Monsters, GX, and the upcoming movie) they should know how to summon a fucking dragon. I'm just thinking to myself what the fuck is this shit they made me watch? HOLY CRAP, that was lazy.

It is not lazy. It is mostly bad animators animating on a short schedule.

Instances like this require some form of competence, or sakuga. that wasnt even attempted I feel. the funny thing about CGI is you can order the creation of the model well in advance of an episode, or subcontract another studio to handle it. What i want is for big scenes to feel big. this doesn't feel anywhere close to big, henceforth it's a lazy effort. especially considering this show's ratings. I'm relatively certain a fan using SFM could do better. tight scheduling can only excuse so much. but considering this is the climax to the arc, one would assume they planned this ending well in advance.JulieYBM wrote:It is not lazy. Just re-watched the summoning of Super Shenlong and man that looked terrible. It looks like Toei animated the entire scene in Windows Movie Maker.
Spoiler:

Did you see the episode? Both things were really poor executed, especially the animation.bushybutt wrote:Make up your mind bro, is the animation or the art bad?PMD wrote:All the sumoning had very poor animation. Some expressions were funny, but the drawing was very lazy, especially with Vegeta.
Pretty meh episode in terms of animation.
Re: Super Animation Catalogue - [Updated with #41]
I feel like they didn't even try with the Dragon. The schedule isn't even an excuse at this point. I'm sorry but I'm tired of cutting Super excuses.
Re: Super Animation Catalogue - [Updated with #41]
Agree. Seeing how they decided to go with all those zooms and different scales of the same drawing, it was just a lazy work by the animators. There's no excuses for this.
Re: Super Animation Catalogue - [Updated with #41]
Guys. In a industry producing hundreds of episodes a year withsix weeks or less for animation the amount of actually good animators available on such short notice is going to be tiny. Hell, even good animators turn in bad work.

I dont see anything wrong with animation apart from the digital movement.
Re: Super Animation Catalogue - [Updated with #41]
Personally, I liked the summoning the animation really didn't look bad to me. Guess I have really low standards, but the animation and art never bothered me in Super except on a few occasions. I actually think Super looks very pretty most of the time.

I did notice it was lazy animation on the summoning, but the rest episode itself was fairly decent, and the music placement was definitely awesome.
The Super Shenlong Still at the end of his summoning though, WAS AMAZING, And some parts of the summoning were really and expressed the whole scale of the dragon.
