How did you decide/get your avatar?

I was watching Battle of Gods and I liked the expression Piccolo had on his face in that scene, so I thought it would be a good avatar to use.

I recently watched Battle of Gods again (for the third time), and went on a screencapping rampage. Like, every time Vegeta was on screen and making a silly face I was going "SCREENCAP SCREENCAP SCREENCAP!" I knew I needed to make a new avatar from the dozens of images I captured, but there was just too many to choose from! I finally narrowed it down to a top 2, and agonized over which to pick:

I tried cutting both of them down to avatar size, and while both lose a lot of impact in a smaller form, I'm going with the Vegeta/Bulma one for now. But I might change it again later, because Vegeta's overly happy face is so fucking cute

I must concur. Day-in-and-day-out Takamura is always a hoot. My current avatar is from the title page for chapter #944, where Takamura has a bar fight with a bunch of the other boxers in the series. It's a hilarious chapter. Truly, "Beware a Champion who drinks alone."

I've always wanted to get into HnI...but will I have to read all 1000+ chapters to know what's going on? I wouldn't think so, but....

I'd say kinda yes. It is released as an anime also, if you prefer that.
There are so many golden moments and funny moments throughout the series, the characters that are battling their own problems and so forth, so I recommend starting from chapter one.
Once you start reading it, you will probably have no problem continuing.

EDIT: Also, there are a lot of recurring characters that are followed throughout the story.
Rarely a noteworthy character will appear and just be forgotten.

Plus even when you start at chapter 1. It's well paced and those 1000 chapters go by fast. I been a fan of HJNIPPO for a long time. I didn't learn till just now cause of your comment that it was a 1000 chapters. I thought it was 328.

Adding to what Godo said: it's an incredible series. Morikawa George is just as hilarious as Toriyama. I would suggest watching the cartoons. The first series alone covers chapters #1-269 in the first seventy-five episodes. Madhouse managed to cast perfect actors in all of the roles. Nobody could pull off Takamura's assholish-ness like Koyama Rikiya. Equally, nobody can match Kiyasu Kouhei as Ippo. I'm so glad Madhouse finally did their third series, which is currently simulcasting on Crunchyroll. It's a shame they had to sacrifice the Shimabukuro fight, but luckily Aoki's bid for the belt is receiving much better treatment.
