I got the set today?
I thought I cancelled my order. Oh well.
I never got anyone to confirm Tenshinhan's "nose shot" from the first set of screens that went up so that's the first thing I looked at. It's a scrolling shot that goes from chin to eyes that lasts about a second. Not a big deal at all.
The dirt spots and stuff really irks me since this set's supposed to be "remastered". There's a bootleg set I've seen that seems more clean than that.
Overall, from what little I've viewed I see it this way: I still want 4:3. However, 16:9 doesn't irk me when seen in motion as bad as it irks some others. If a 4:3 set came out I could see myself eventually buying in both formats just so I have the option to watch the series in either format.
It's mostly that I want the option to see it either way rather than simply having FUNi go "we know what's best for you".
Anywho, I gotta be heading to work. By the beginning of next week I'll try to have some screens up of DBZ in 16:9 and in 4:3 just for comparison's sake.

Just watched some of it on my widescreen laptop and now I am even more impressed, but I noticed that the colors on my laptop were much more colorfull, like the greens were green unstead of black, then when I watch it on my tv, so I guess Ill have to ajust my tv.

Since Funimation has used the Ultimate Uncut script for the widescreen Vegeta Saga episodes, you can be sure that they'll just re-use the old Frieza saga script when they get to it... so expect Frieza to tell Goku to wash behind his ears while he's drowning him with the JAP BGM playing in the background.ect5150 wrote:The real test of how good the new box sets are will be seen when the third set is released. Only then do we get into episodes that have already been released in the US. People bitch about buying DragonBox singles (which I personally am doing), but that's not for everyone. For those people not getting Dbox singles, lets wait and see what happens if they buy the Freeza Saga a second time just to have it in widescreen/new voice-overs. What will those individuals do then?simon_winter wrote:Some of us actually like, despite some HEAVY flaws, the new boxed set.
The real test won't begin until that happens.

Er, no.I highly doubt that. Even if Funimation was to reuse the UUE script, they wouldn't leave everything else the same. To say that would mean the return of "next dimension" and the infamous "back scratcher".Besides, wasn't it said that they were going back to do lines when the new box set (this one) was announced?Gokuden553 wrote:Since Funimation has used the Ultimate Uncut script for the widescreen Vegeta Saga episodes, you can be sure that they'll just re-use the old Freeza saga script when they get to it... so expect Freeza to tell Goku to wash behind his ears while he's drowning him with the JAP BGM playing in the background.

You can call me Rick because I'm not actually Piccolo.
I missed out on all of the DB Movie fun, huh?
Point blank: it's gonna suck if you want it to. Personally, I'm seeing it as a comedy.

Okay, please nobody burn me at the stake here. I too was really pissed off looking at screenshot comparisons.
Yet...watching the set that arrived today, gods I actually like this. I'd still PREFFER full screen and I dont support them chopping that off. That said, this picture quality is just amazing, and I really don't have an issue with this set in motion. I know this won't be a popular opinion and I respect that but I have to say...I'm impressed. I didn't think I'd like it but here I am, liking it. Hell the dubs even watchable with the original BGM in the background (though I still eventually switched back to sub because the dub lines are still ugh).
Do I reccomend this set? Yes.
Am I enjoying this set? LOVING it in fact.
Is it PERFECT? No. They really should have made two sets - one for widescreen, one for fullscreen. To be fair on my 25 inch flatscreen TV I barely have any bars at all so it still looks good. Take it to my dad's TV which is a way too large HDTV and it looks....amazing. HOWEVER the cropping WILL be issues for some, but not all.
Overall I'd give this DVD set a B+ on product, and an A for effort. Its clean and looks good, but honestly, would full screen have killed them for an option?
That all said $50 full retail isnt bad (though I only did pay $30). I do wish ALL my DBZ DVDs were this clean.

You're missing the point, I know they wont use the "Next Dimension" lines since they already re-dubbed over that with the Ultimate Uncut script not to mention that was from the old Ocean dub anyways... what I mean is the later sagas Frieza-Kid Buu e.t.c would just keep the same script.Mr.Piccolo wrote:Er, no.I highly doubt that. I know Funimation couldn't be bothered to re-dub the rest of the episodes, here's an example clip that they re-used the Ultimate Uncut script in the widescreen episode "Princess Snake"

Nothings possibly been changed since we all know Funimation arn't capable of correcting their past mistakes with a all new script for the later sagas, your all just going to re-buy all of these new widescreen releaces which contain the same dub script but with the original BGM this time... geez no wonder Funimation have such a high budget in money since back then.Tanooki Kuribo wrote:Why woulndt they use the same script? Don't get hasty. Everyone knows how bad season 3 was when FUNi first started dubbing. I can definitely see FUNi re-dubbing the voices up until the Garlic Jr. stuff. Heck, they might have already done it. We have a long way to go before we get the third set in our hands but I don't think we should doubt FUNi so much. I mean they did pull off a pretty nice set already. The way I see it, DragonBall Season Sets are like girlfriends, they look very nice and you love them but theres always that tiny weiny flaw that makes you cringe from time to time. Doesn't mean you have to dump them.

Season 2 will include the Ginyu saga correct?
And the Ginyu saga was apart of Funi's season 3 dub.
So we will get to see the voice changes soon.
(as well as some script changes; the season 3 script was the worst of them all!) Mondo cool....

All of you guys are talking about the revised english audio that funimation stated would be in the new sets. Perhaps Funimation was just talking about their revised english audio for the Vegeta saga and Namek saga(How they redid the Ocean Group's dub). I personally think that is what they meant, and that no changes will be made to the rest of the series at all. I know that would be some false advertising on Funimation, but they've done it before.

We'll just have to see about that. Um, doesn't this new box set qualify the whole "correcting past mistakes" thing. I mean, aren't they releasing these sets in an organized fashion as opposed to, you know, not doing so? Can't you people give them credit for anything..besides the original DragonballGokuden553 wrote:Nothings possibly been changed since we all know Funimation arn't capable of correcting their past mistakes with a all new script for the later sagas, your all just going to re-buy all of these new widescreen releaces which contain the same dub script but with the original BGM this time... geez no wonder Funimation have such a high budget in money since back then.

I got the set for my birthday since it was dirt cheap at only $29.99 at Best Buy. I thought: "39 for less than the price of a DragonBox single? Sure, why not!" I took it home and started watching it out of morbid curiosity. Here's my review:
As of today, I've seen up to "The Strangest Robot" In English with the Japanese BGM. First thing to bother me was no HEAD-CHA-LA for this track. And why do we get ZENKAI POWER of the ending? I would attribut that to a mistake in DVD authoring. The 5.1 track was very well done in my opinion! once I got over the awkwardness of hearing English with Japanese BGM, I was entranced. It FELT like the series that I originally fell in love with. A version that's a worthy successor to the Dragonball dub. The sound distribution was well put together, I was blown away mainly by Kinto'un flying from the back to the front speakers! And the BGM sound amazing!
As far as video goes, it's nice! Not stellar as advertised, but nice... The lines are sharp and colors bright. The set adjusted well to my widescreen TV. There is still some noise that can be distracting, but it's a huge leap forward from the UUCs. Then there's the stuff that Corey brought up. Those artifacts pop up... QUITE A BIT, and to me it gets fucking annoying! Seriously, isn't this supposed to be the uber-shit remastered lol edition!? It really gives the impression it was half-assed.
As far as my thoughts on the Widescreen, most of the time it's alright. But there's a few instances where it hits you like a ton of fucking bricks. Things like "WTF? Where's Goku's halo?" or "Gee, that shot cut out quick!" have been bothering me as I watch this set.
Those are my thoughts thus far. The dub with Japanese BGM in 5.1 and the inclusion of the Japanese track with Mr. Simmons' subtitles makes it worth the $30.00 entry fee. The Widescreen can be dealt with, but the artifacts that should've been fixed in the remastering process are very noticeable and I feel that they detract from the viewing experience.
