You're absolutely right. I guess I felt that's just a cynical way to look at stuff. Maybe he really does feel like that. We'll never know.
I completely respect your opinion, and I respect you. I enjoyed discussing this with you, even if I don't completely agree.

Sounds like you guys are just turning what he said into what you want to hear. Why can't he be excited for it?

That's farfetched. Just like him hating it.

Based on logic and what we know about Toriyama, he most likely doesn't give two shits. We can't KNOW, but we can of course make substantiated guesses.

Farfetched is a pokemon :P

Far fetched? I find it completely ludicrous to say that the man who created this manga/anime juggernaut has zero interest in a live action movie being based on his franchise.

There's an easy way to determine real meaning behind what someone says: Pretend you're a guy (if you're not one already), and the comment is what a girl is saying about your dick. Would you want a girl saying she initially thought 'huh' about your dick, but that she thinks it might be a 'great masterpiece of power'? :P

Seriously though, why would Toriyama pad the statement with his initial misgivings about the film? If he really felt excited, he could have easily said "The director, all the actors, the staff, and the rest are nothing but "ultra" high-caliber people. It is as a New Dragonball of a different dimension. Perhaps, this might become a great masterpiece of power! Hey, I look forward to it!!" and left out the initial negative/uncertain comments. The fact that he made the initial part of the statement the way he did leads me to believe that he genuinely thinks the film might not be the best adaptation, or he perceives that the Japanese public thinks that way (which, given Greg's report from a few weeks back isn't too out there).

Uh, but no-one said that. What people are saying, because it's, you know, right, is that Akira Toriyama usually always throws amicable comments towards anything to do with Dragon Ball as long as it's not about himself (as he is a horribly harsh critic of his own abilities) and that past precedent in his various comments would suggest that we not read too much into what he says, good or ill.

Well, if we want to assume he was telling the truth with this part, I see no reason why we shouldn't take the second half of the quote to heart either:

Again, I mention the "dick" metaphor.

Allow me to make a slightly less crass and slightly more relative comparison.

You head over to a museum because you heard they've just gotten a reproduction of Michelangelo's David. You get there and discover that instead of being made of marble like the original as you expected, it's a modern-art thingy composed of iron and wire and glass or what have you, cleverly constructed into the same form.

"Maybe the right way for me to appreciate the statue is to think of it as a David of a different dimension."

Notice how he’s making excuses for it? He wouldn’t have to do that if he were genuinely pleased.

Um, I’d feel ripped off, because that’s not what I would have gone to see. Your example suggests that we should be content with deceptive advertising.

Err, that's not the best comparison in my opinion. Were this film merely different materials "constructed into the same form," then sure. In this case though, there's numerous differences that make it quite a different piece. In your scenario, David would have something like a more modern "emo" haircut and lip piercings (as the DragonBall live-action film does appear to be modernizing, to use an objective term, the manga/anime quite a bit) if you wanted to make an apples-to-apples comparison to the DragonBall scenario.

As Acid_Reign stated though, were the museum merely touting it as a "reproduction" without stating the differences, I'm sure quite a few people would be upset.

That WAS called 'ending it and not pressing the issue, since my efforts are apparently falling on deaf ears.'

I've 'learned my place,' if you will, and when to give up on these kind of things. Snappy retorts are not needed or appreciated.

Fair enough. I was personally just trying to make the best counterargument I could to your scenario. I don't think I was being particularly closed-minded.

That's your call. I just think a reply of "whatever" is a bit of a waste. Still, I'll leave it well enough alone. Sorry if I caused any offense, I was just trying to discuss a film.
