A friend of mine actually texted me the news. He said something like, "They're coming out with Dragon Boxes!!!!" or something like that. The first thing I did was think to myself, "It isn't April 1st. What's going on?" Then he sent another text telling me to log onto DaizEX to read the news on the homepage. I did, then I texted him back saying something like, "ZOMGWTF FUNIMATION is doing this?!?!?! Kickass!!!!" and then we talked about it online and through texting throughout the rest of the day.

Yesterday, I went to go see Grease the Musical, my first ever live musical, and when I came home, I checked the news. I found the news of the Dragon Boxes in the US, and I just about shit my pants.

Has Funimation formally announced that the English dub is on the track? It doesn't really matter which one it is. English with dub music or Japanese music doesn't really matter to me. All I want is the English voices that I grew up with and the original Japanese voices that I love so much. 8)

Yesterday morning, I got a text from my friend who was at Otakon with Mike saying "ZOMG THE DRAGONBOX". I had NO idea what he was saying. I was thinking that he probably saw the Dragon Box in the dealer's room or something.

Then I checked Mike's twitter, dropped my jaw, and ran around the house in joy. I spent the entire day and today checking this thread. :P

I just signed up for twitter the other day. For some reason, that was the first website I went to the morning of. I saw FUNimation's entry which said "... and Dragon Box." I did a double take, then it occurred to me: FUNimation just said "Dragon Box. I went to the forums to see if there was a thread, and I swear to god, my cursor did not move fast enough. It was slow-mo all the way to the bookmarks toolbar. I clicked, then clicked "General Discussion," low-and-behold, there were 6 pages already. I flipped out. Read the whole thing, then posted.

Then I checked daizex.com, Anime News Network, Kanzentai, YouTube, Twitter. I just liked seeing the news posted. I spent the next couple hours in the chat and on the forums. Then I went to Kanzentai and read their Dragon Box pages, all of them. I stewed in excitement for the rest of the day.

The end.

I haven't seen any formal announcements of it, but on the Otakon video where it was announced (start at about 8:30) it says on the screen at around 11:21 that it defaults to Japanese with English subtitles. If it defaults to that setting, then there must be settings other than the default. So, we can assume that there's going to be an English dub on there. Which one is a different story, though.

I think I might have a game plan worked out to nab these.

The first set will be easy: it comes out damn near right smack on my birthday. So it’s a terribly no-brainer birthday request.

Following that, I’m thinking I’ll be selling my bricks at about $20 a pop (which I think is more than fair considering I paid between $30 and $35 for each of them, and have kept them all in immaculate condition: most of them even still have that “fresh out of the plastic wrap” smell to them). So I figure, if I sell them at about a rate of two per Dragon Box, that’s $40, allowing me to knock off roughly half the price of the corresponding Dragon Box (maybe more if I get them online for less than the official $80 price tag).

So in short:

Dragon Box 1: Birthday gift.
Dragon Box 2: $40 off from bricks 1 and 2.
Dragon Box 3: $40 off from bricks 3 and 4.
Dragon Box 4: $40 off from bricks 5 and 6.
Dragon Box 5: $40 off from bricks 7 and 8.
Dragon Box 6: $20 off from brick 9.
Dragon Box 7: Will more than likely be able to request it for the birthday of that year (or depending on how the release schedule works out, I’d be able to request an earlier one, meaning that the money for bricks sold would be transferred down instead to this one).

Think that’ll work out, or does anyone else have something better in mind?

I'm in the generation of fans that started with Toonami, so I totally empathize with the feeling of having "missed the party", experiencing disappointment, and wanting to experience it myself. But I can't, that's how life is. Time is a bitch. The party is over. Kageyama, Kikuchi, and Maeda are off the sauce now; Yanami almost OD'd; Yamamoto got arrested; Toriyama's not going to light trash cans on fire and hang from the chandelier anymore. We can't get the band back together, and even if we could, everyone's either old, in poor health, or calmed way the fuck down. Best we're going to get, and are getting, is a party that's almost entirely devoid of the magic that made the original one so awesome that we even want more.

The press release does at least confirm that there is one.

I don't want to go back and read the last 10-or so pages done in 5 minutes, so I'm going to ask this...

At Kanzentai, it said that there were 5 DragonBox sets, but FUNimation said it'll be 7! Any thoughts of why we will get 2 extra boxes?!

They split the two Z boxes into 7.

There are 5 sets (2 Z, 1 DB, 1 GT, 1 Movie). The 7 Funimation sets are the 2 Z sets broken into 7.

5 Dragon Box sets in total for the series; 2 DBZ, 1 DB, 1 GT, and the Movies Box.

Over the entirety of DB, DBZ, and DBGT there were five Dragon Boxes in Japan. In the US, the two DBZ Dragon Boxes will be split into seven smaller boxes. Probably so that it's more affordable since we're buying it in smaller chunks than the Japanese fans did.

EDIT: Oh, snap! I was really slow on the draw, there!

It's most likely going to be difficult for me, starting September I'll be getting about $45-50 a week for going to college (Yeah, we can get paid to go to college in the UK), and that only lasts 6 months, and I'll get two $160 bonuses for good work, so I'll have to work my ass out, and 30 minutes of walking leaves me breathless, so I'll be kinda fucked there, I need to exercise more...

Hopefully Funi will do a nice steady sped up release, since there's barely any work for do for these sets.

And I can ask people to give me money for Christmas... That'll help... And I want to get One Piece too. I'll only sell the bricks as a last resort I guess.

Oh yeah, when I found out, I was bragging about how I only needed one more set to complete my collection to a friend, then I had stomach pains after hearing the news. Then my family made fun of me.

There are five Dragon Boxes total in Japan - 2 DBZ Boxes, 1 DB Box, 1 GT, and 1 Movie Box. The 7 Boxes coming out here are all for DBZ.

When I found out about these, I just saw the thread come up at the forum and figured it was a weird Toei release. Then I found out it was Funbi and was like, "ZOMG!"

EDIT: Damn, everybody hopped on to answer that

Guys, the homepage has been updated with more Dragon Box news including a formal press release that answers some of our questions:

- will span the entire 291 episode television series and all 13 of its movies.
- the original Japanese audio (with options for an English track or English subtitles)

You're a little late there, bud. But then again, I doubt anyone really feels like going back about 30 pages to when I posted it.
