I don't think it's an impossible ideal, and while this isn't an opinion about DB, it is an unpopular one, I think Watchmen is completely overrated. Even if we assume purity of heart is an impossible ideal, that doesn't mean it would always end up negatively. People striving to be better, even if the example isn't realistic, is a good thing.
I don't need much of a plot to enjoy something. I just need characters I enjoy, some humor, good dialog, and a conflict. Someone or some people is doing bad things, our heroes have to stop them. It's clear cut and makes sense.
If your idea of what Dragon Ball would really be like is as bleak as that, that says more about your outlook on life than it does about what would actually happen seeing as how it's complete conjecture.

Back on topic, I don't know if I've already said this, but I like John Burgmeier as Tenshinhan more than Tenshinhan's original japanese voice. Also, I don't know what the prevailing opinion on Giru is, but I like him and think he's a funny character.
