It is in his character to be rude and a bit crass. He's a hick, with no formal education. That is Son Goku. That is who he is.

Superman in an orange Gi was the bastard son of FUNimation. Its not The real character, it is as false as Chatku.

If I did DBZ, I'd have tore down the whole Shonen Genre.

Dragonball
- Roshi's sexual harrassment leads him to be ostracised by everyone (and it's NOT the "harmless old man" harassment that everyone seems to think it is.).
- Krillin is crippled by Roshi's training, and Goku suffers back pain for several months. This leads him to a brief period of drug addiction
- It's not the happy childhood setting, but rather a harsh and brutal world of pain and misery.
- The Dragonballs have a few limitations: Namely, you can only be brought back ONCE (as in you can't go to Namek to bring back someone twice) and mental injuries cannot be healed by the balls.
- While Senzu can heal short term injuries, they can NOT heal medium to long term ones. This allows for an immediate return to the fight, but the body is weakned afterwards.
- Purity of Heart is rather wonky, since Goku is retarded, but does a lot of bad things, yet he is still considered pure. this wonky definition will come into play later.

Z
- Gohan is mentally unstable, considering his father is from a species where Andrei Chikatilo would be the norm
- The Saiyan Saga is about the start of Gohan's descent into insanity. Between seeing his father die, and Piccolo abuse him as well as his identity crisis about whether or not he is human, Gohan is on the brink, a la Lawrence in FMJ
- The Saiyan fight leave Goku's body wrecked.
- The Namek Saga is where things go to hell. While they are searching for the Dragonballs, Gohan and Krillin come across Freeza's minions massacring a village. They stop it, but the sight leaves Gohan's sanity on shoestrings.
- Gohan finally snaps after he sees what he believes to be Freeza's soldiers in a Namekian village. He sends a Ki blast, and moments later, we see that he had killed a few Namekians. He loses it and decides to kill everyone in the village. This isn't like the usual "ki blasts do things cleanly and nicely", and we see the nasty aftermath. Sensing this, Vegeta goes to the village and is shocked by what he sees (Namely, an insane Gohan), and the sight shocks him for the first time in his life that a young child could commit such brutality.
- After the Freeza fight, Krillin makes a shocking discovery: despite being flat-out insane and having massacred a Namekian village, Gohan can still ride the numbus.
- When he returns to Earth, Goku learns that he is dying. The "ultra-brütal training for trüe warriors" has wrecked his body and will no longer be able to fight against future foes.
- Vegeta, frustrated with life on earth, and the knowledge that he can't beat Kakarrot on his terms, leaves Earth, and a pregnant Bulma, forever.
- Androids come along and wreck shit up. This leads to hell on earth as Bulma raises her only son Trunks in secret, and is hoping to develop a time machine so Trunks can go back in time and stop the Androids before they become a threat...

If you wrote that, I wouldn't be on this board as I have NO interest in that show. That's insanely dark, but I guess that's all for the sake of "realism".

Hey, at least it has more plot than "we have to get stronger!" which is the only thing that passes for a plot in DB.

No, it isn't. What you wrote is even worth less watching that Evolution.

I was thinking more in terms of Spec Ops The Line compared to Medal of Honor Warfighter.

This sounds like a really, REALLY bad fanfiction.

Hell, these aren't even opinions, just you stating said bad fanfic.

And these sort of FF's aren't even that unpopular. I'm actually getting a bit sick of all these things like the Ash's coma for Pokemon or "this character would be a psycho in RL".

Goku's body wouldn't be wrecked by his training over the years. For one, senzu, and more importantly, it's a cartoon with cartoon logic.

I was merely going by "what would dragonball actually be like"? a la Evangelion/Watchmen/Song of Ice and Fire.

What's worse is the coma theory becoming Pokemon's equivalent of Abridged references.

What does that have to do with unpopular opinions? :problem:

Nah I actually kinda liked it tbh, I enjoy depressing versions of fantasy worlds for some reason.

I've been reading about Spec Ops The Line lately (really nasty FPS that eviscerates the genre) and I thought what would happen if a similar treatment were visited on Shonen series?

I guess on why it's my opinion, it's more of a how I'd have done Dragonball, and how I've changed in my thinking over the past few years (as in I tend to go "If it existed, how would that actually turn out?")*. I mean, Dragonball has little if any plot (come on, "and strong guys got stronger" ad nauseum isn't really much of a plot), and my idea was "An impossible ideal (purity of heart in this case) would ruin people, here's how and why" (look to Glengarry Glen Ross for an excellent execution of that premise)

*Then again, the Euro Crisis has really put a dent in that outlook, considering the implausible solutions being implemented.

I don't think it's an impossible ideal, and while this isn't an opinion about DB, it is an unpopular one, I think Watchmen is completely overrated. Even if we assume purity of heart is an impossible ideal, that doesn't mean it would always end up negatively. People striving to be better, even if the example isn't realistic, is a good thing.

I don't need much of a plot to enjoy something. I just need characters I enjoy, some humor, good dialog, and a conflict. Someone or some people is doing bad things, our heroes have to stop them. It's clear cut and makes sense.

If your idea of what Dragon Ball would really be like is as bleak as that, that says more about your outlook on life than it does about what would actually happen seeing as how it's complete conjecture.

"Then again, the Euro Crisis has really put a dent in that outlook, considering the implausible solutions being implemented."
What? :eh:

Back on topic, I don't know if I've already said this, but I like John Burgmeier as Tenshinhan more than Tenshinhan's original japanese voice. Also, I don't know what the prevailing opinion on Giru is, but I like him and think he's a funny character.

Look at Cyprus. 6 months ago, would you have even thought the EU would treat them they way they have done?

This isn't the place to discuss politics and economics. If you want to, PM me. Let's keep this on topic.

Another unpopular DB opinion I hold is that I find GT enjoyable. Yes, the fights aren't very good and it's derivative, but a lot of work is derivative. I think there's plenty of good humor in the show and some interesting ideas in the show.

I liked GT though, the Bebi arc was interesting and I always enjoy a Dragon Ball hunt. Super 17 arc I don't like, as it basically plays like a greatest hits version of DBZ (fighting Frieza, #17, etc. again). But the Dragon arc is pretty good, I just wish they'd let non-Goku characters beat a Dragon.
