I wouldn't consider having two to three "official" English spellings being consistent. Why should we put any stock in the spellings chosen by some Shueisha or Toei employee who obviously doesn't know much English? Especially if they, as you say, "have little reason to care about" the English spellings? Did the guy who called Gurd (gurudo) "Ghourd" in one of the Daizenshuu really know that his name comes from the "gurt" (guruto) in yogurt? I mean, they even mocked that spelling in that podcast episode about the various Dragon Ball guide books.Olivier Hague wrote:They're actually pretty consistent, considering they have little reason to care about that, from their perspective.
On chapter 26's title page:Olivier Hague wrote:Interesting, I guess I missed that one. Do you remember when that was?

Also, "Yajirove" was from chapter 140's title page:

It's funny how many official English spellings get attached to clothing and motorcycles. ^.^
And "Radiz" was from Dragon Ball Landmark.
Plus the official character design sheet showed that TOEI's prefered alphabetized spelling is "Tarble."Herms wrote:Extended "a" sounds in Japanese are often romanized as "ar", like with Zarbon (za-bon).KaiserNeko wrote:Isn't it Table?Dayspring wrote:My hang-ups: Tarble's age.
Vegeta+Table=Vegetable?
It's not Ta-ru-bu-ru, it's Ta-bu-ru. ターブル.
I just don't want to call him "Table" since it's is a pun on vegetable and not furniture, so if there's even a chance that the English version has any alternate spelling, I'm going to use it. "Tarble" looks not only like the legit spelling, but exactly what I'm looking for.
Seriously, people, we've got user using "Tahble" and "Tuhble" as spellings, and most users still prefer to use "Bebi" over Baby. You can let me get away with this one thing, can't you? Especially since there's more than a 50% chance that I'm spelling it right. ^_^;;

Er... I don't understand that sentence, sorry. Could you rephrase? ^^;Chibi Mystic Gohan wrote:I wouldn't consider having two to three "official" English spellings being consistent.
First of all, that's a generality. Just because you came across some name spellings that (somehow?) gave you the impression whoever came up with them had lousy English skills, that doesn't mean that necessarily applies to all of these guys. Why should we put any stock in the spellings chosen by some Shueisha or Toei employee who obviously doesn't know much English?
Then, who cares about their English skills anyway? Those are imaginary names! Even when they're based on English words, they don't have to be those English words (and you can often tell they're not, just based on the kana). That would be a good point for stuff like "Red Ribon" and such, but most of the time...
(alphabet spellings... alphabet != English)Especially if they, as you say, "have little reason to care about" the English spellings?
Well, did you know that the Japanese "yôguruto" actually comes from the German "Joghurt"? Did you know that the spelling "yoghourt" actually exists?Did the guy who called Gurd (gurudo) "Ghourd" in one of the Daizenshuu really know that his name comes from the "gurt" (guruto) in yogurt?
So, by the very logic you appear to be using, why should I put any stock in your spellings when you're obviously missing some facts? :þ
Add to that the thing about the name being consistently spelled "Ghourd" on Japanese material... and the bit about you being a fan, whereas they're just a tiny bit higher up in the hierarchy...
... Well, you should see what I'm getting at. :þ
But really, even if it did come from the English "yogurt", there would be no reason to assume that whoever came up with the spelling "Ghourd" didn't know that. You sound biased. ^^;
Oooh, the podcast, you say?! Damn! 'Sounds so official! ;þI mean, they even mocked that spelling in that podcast episode about the various Dragon Ball guide books.
No wonder I missed that one! ^__^;On chapter 26's title page:
[snip]
Thank you!
Yeah, I saw that one. Also, "Yajirove" was from chapter 140's title page
I'm seeing "Raditz" at page 74..."Radiz" was from Dragon Ball Landmark.
I remember when this forum used to be good. Now it's just fanboys flamming other fanboys. Everyone being anal about the most trivial of things. Everyone bitching about anything that someone else doesn't agree with. Seriously guys, you probably keep forgetting that all this is about a juvenile cartoon series. Grow up. I can't look at a piece of news or decent comment without being bombarded by flame wars and anal comments. I'm forced to use that old quote: Internet arguing is like Special Olympics, even if you win, you are still retarded.
I know this won't change anything, it's not like any of you will actually stop, but at least it's a piece of my mind, and there's always hope.

I'd rather people have different opinions and debate over a circle jerk. Forums aren't fun when everybody thinks and types the same stuff,DNA wrote:I remember when this forum used to be good. The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

This is reasoned debate, not flaming. If you can't tell the difference...well, that's your failing.DNA wrote:I remember when this forum used to be good. Now it's just fanboys flamming other fanboys. Well, you said that the "alphabet" spellings were pretty consistent. Yet some characters have had two or three different spellings assigned to them, some being downright ridiculous (come on, you can't tell me that "Laditwo" for Raditz isn't stupid. Plus, it disregards the name pun entirely). I don't see any "consistency" there. Even the main character has three different "official" names.Olivier Hague wrote:Er... I don't understand that sentence, sorry. Could you rephrase? ^^;Chibi Mystic Gohan wrote:I wouldn't consider having two to three "official" English spellings being consistent.
And I didn't address this earlier, but both "Bageta" and "Begeta" are littered throughout Dragon Ball Landmark and Forever. I don't remember what the Daizenshuu used...
Aww, come on, you know that isn't what I was saying. I was pointing out that someone else has made the same observation about the name. But in light of the new information you've given me, that particular name doesn't look so stupid. ^.^Olivier Hague wrote:Oooh, the podcast, you say?! Damn! 'Sounds so official! ;þ
I have no idea where my copy of Landmark is, but it isn't that big of a deal.Olivier Hague wrote:I'm seeing "Raditz" at page 74...

Is it really that bad?
Some of the alternate spellings are actually just English translations, and the rest of them mainly concern Asian names (which isn't exactly surprising considering there are several transliteration systems for those).
That being said, the only "casualties" I'd see would be "Kuririn", "Lunch", "Yajirove", "Raditz", "Vegeta", "Apoule", "Burtta" and "Barduck"...
"Kuririn"... Well, yeah, that's a bit of a problem. Tôei is consistent, but Toriyama disagrees. Thing is, Toriyama isn't consistent. Sometimes, life sucks like that. And in case you're wondering, I couldn't for the life of me remember where I stumbled upon that one "Clylyn."
"Lunch"... Well, if that's how Toriyama spells it, I guess we might as well go with that.
"Yajirove"... A second problem. It would make sense for the name to look Japanese, but a "V"? Really? There are quite a few "Yajirobe" out there, but if Toriyama went with "Yajirove"... Meh.
"Raditz"... I only found one "Laditwo", and a whole bunch of "Raditz". Case closed, as far as I'm concerned.
"Vegeta"... Well, again, "Vegeta" wins by such a huge margin I don't think there's any doubt to have.
"Apoule"... The only "Apur" comes from a recent video game that also used a bunch of spellings from the US version. Additionally, who cares? ;þ
"Burtta"... I found only one "Burta" and a bunch of "Burtta". It looks like you want the pun to be as apparent as possible, so I believe you'll be pleased with that double "T", huh? ^^
"Barduck"... I think I've seen "Barduck" a couple of times and "Bardack" only once. Way too small a sample, really.
So, again... Was it really that bad?
You know, I'm not even sure how the name puns became so damn important... Shouldn't they be... well, Easter eggs at best? ^^;come on, you can't tell me that "Laditwo" for Raditz isn't stupid. Plus, it disregards the name pun entirely
