Preach, the "Piccolo is Gohan's real dad" joke stopped being funny years ago.

That's only if you're taking into account Piccolo Jr's physical age. Piccolo was hundreds of years old, and Jr. seems to have retained his "father's" memories, making them essentially the same person. Additionally, Jr. rose to physical maturity exceptionally fast. Faster than most Namekians, it seems.

Also, the joke exists because there is truth to it. From the point Raditz shows up, Goku spends very little time with Gohan. Goku dies to Raditz, trains with King Kai in the Other World, while Piccolo trains Gohan and develops an attachment towards him. Goku comes back just in time to fight Vegeta, ends up stuck in the hospital while Gohan goes to Namek. Goku eventually follows, showing up just in time to fight the Ginyu Force. He gets injured again and placed in a healing tank. Piccolo is resurrected and fights Frieza, loses, then Goku shows up. Goku goes Super Saiyan and is presumed dead. They discover he's alive, but he wants not to be transported to Earth, because he found strange aliens to train with. At this point, even Chichi has barely seen Gohan

There's a time skip after Goku arrives, and IIRC, Goku, Piccolo, and Gohan all train together to prepare for the androids. One year later, Goku is put in a coma by a virus. Goku eventually recovers and learns about Cell. He trains with Gohan for a year in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, with the goal of teaching him to become a Super Saiyan. When the Cell Games come along, despite spending all that time with his son, Goku shows himself to be too focused on his own desires to recognize that his son doesn't like fighting. Piccolo is the one to call him out on this, apparently knowing Gohan better than he did. Goku sacrifices himself and chooses to stay dead for several years, missing the birth of his second son in the process.

Nowadays, Goku is alive, but he'd rather spend his time training with Whis than at home. Meanwhile, Piccolo is helping raise Pan, as a grandfather-like figure. Goku has barely interacted with Pan. While Goku clearly cares about his family, his interests often draw him elsewhere.

By Earth's calendar, Piccolo is just thirty one years old by the end of the manga. We know Namekuseijins live for centuries (he will still be alive by the time Dragon Ball Online starts). Dude is so young, maybe too young to have any kids of his own, but he has always been treated as someone with experience and as a master, go figure.
