"Dragon Ball Super" Series Official Announcement & Discussion Thread
Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion
Gaiking: Legend of Daikuu Maruryuu was thirty-nine episodes long because it was taking over for a unexpectedly canceled Boboboubo Boubobo. It's not impossible to have a three cours series. I'm not entirely convinced it will happen, but there's certainly those facts to consider.

It would be beyond stupid to end Super when DB has a huge worldwide appeal. IMO it would be totally idiotic for Toei to even think about it. Just gotta wait and see for now.
Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion
Especially for something like Monster Hunter that's an older franchise (not as old as DB, still old) that doesn't even have big popularity overseas. ^^;Sora Saiyan wrote:It would be beyond stupid to end Super when DB has a huge worldwide appeal. A quick google search says Monster Hunter came out during the PS2 era. (At first I though it was even older; I had it mixed up with Monster Rancher.)
Unless Toei just doesn't care about making money internationally? Or they don't take potential international sales into consideration?

Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion
If they do end Super after the Universe 6 arc it doesn't mean that there won't be another new show or season that would come out after the Monster Hunter anime ends.
That way it would give Toriyama time to come up with a new story, ideas and character designs.
I wouldn't mind personally if they rotated Super with another anime each year.

Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion
Monster Hunter has been gaining popularity overseas slowly ever since it shifted to the 3DS but that aside, It is MASSIVE in Japan. So the promise of a anime for that would possibly be very tempting I guess.Chuquita wrote:Especially for something like Monster Hunter that's an older franchise (not as old as DB, still old) that doesn't even have big popularity overseas. ^^;Sora Saiyan wrote:It would be beyond stupid to end Super when DB has a huge worldwide appeal. I don't think they're gonna replace super or cancel it but this kind of news may indicate that Super didn't hit the projected ratings they were looking for.

Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion
I'll be massively surprised if Monster Hunter comes close to DB's popularity worldwide, yeah it is ridiculously big in Japan and would most definitely do better than Super there, but when comparing it to the rest of the world I'm pretty sure it will pale in comparison.
Edit: Let's just hope Funi get there hands on Super as soon as possible, if Toei are unsure at the minute, once Super is released in other territories it should put this talk to bed... I hope.

The issue is that we're looking at these things from a worldwide perspective and not from the perspective of Japan. The TV station doesn't care about the series popularity outside of Japan because that doesn't count towards the ratings in Japan.Sora Saiyan wrote:I'll be massively surprised if Monster Hunter comes close to DB's popularity worldwide, yeah it is ridiculously big in Japan and would most definitely do better than Super there, but when comparing it to the rest of the world I'm pretty sure it will pale in comparison.

Monster Hunter may not reach Dragon Ball popularity outside of Japan but the two in my opinion are neck and neck inside Japan. Mostly cause while Dragon Ball took a long snooze, Monster Hunter kept going with game after game. This isn't to say Monster Hunter is gonna dethrone Dragon Ball in the hearts and minds of the people but we can't really look at the stuff involving super in Japan and go "Well that's crazy! Don't they know how huge this is around the world?!" when in all reality...the worldwide appeal doesn't matter to them right now.
Who knows though, we may be reading far too deep into this and should just...wait and see.

Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion
Why do people assume that Super will end soon? As long if the series gets good ratings and good toy sales, we don't have nothing to worry about. I doubt history will repeat itself like what happen with GT. Where GT ended sooner then what people expected. Not to mention GT had ideas left on the table that they didn't use at the time because of time reasons.

Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion
People assume it will end soon because of the newly announed Monster Hunter anime. And it's Toei's fault for re using ideas. Of course there are people who don't care to watch the same story they've already seen...
Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion
I do think the retelling of BoG and RoF may be the noose around Super's neck right now...I hope they decide to just skip the RoF section after the BoG stuff is done. Just like "Well shit, people didn't like the BoG retelling that much...maybe we shouldn't do this RoF retelling..." On to U6!

Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion
I think the RoF saga could benefit from the retelling a lot more because there was so much that was unseen.
If they do introduce Champa and Fem Whis into the saga and he actually does train Frieza and that is shown and then also you get to see how Vegeta became a Super Saiyan God (which we haven't seen at all) and then they show how they became SSGSS's for the first time then I think it'd be a lot more interesting than the BoG retelling which hasn't given us much aside from explaining why Goku went to train on King Kai's planet.

Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion
Well that is assuming that the U6 arc is ready, considering the pace of BoG and the way Toriyama worded things I highly doubt it is, BoG and "F" is probably Super's equivalent to filler, besides Super has done okay so far ratings wise and merchandise is only starting to come out, so it is pretty unfair to judge whether Super is a success or failure at this stage.voltlunok wrote:I do think the retelling of BoG and RoF may be the noose around Super's neck right now...I hope they decide to just skip the RoF section after the BoG stuff is done. Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion
I think they didn't think things though. Or they did, and knew doing it this way was a gamble, but didn't have a choice. Toriyama only gave them enough new material for one arc, but because Kai was ending when it was, they had too much space and not enough story to fill the amount of weeks they had. So what could else could they do? The movies were the only other new plot stuff they had, they couldn't do anything Z related, they already had Kai. Retelling the movies feels like throwing buckets of water out of a partly built boat that set sail before it was finished and they're desperately trying to keep it from sinking while working on completing the build.voltlunok wrote:I do think the retelling of BoG and RoF may be the noose around Super's neck right now...I hope they decide to just skip the RoF section after the BoG stuff is done. What "kind of news" when this has no relation to Super whatsoever, other than one person making a connection that doesn't exist? That's stupid.voltlunok wrote:but this kind of news may indicate that Super didn't hit the projected ratings they were looking for.
Let's stop and think a little bit. Super has been running for only 10 episodes and the ratings are good. You're assuming a series that has no timeslot, no studio, no premiere date known was decided, planned and announced in a record two months to replace it even before they started selling Super merchandising. Even before Toei has any kind of deal overseas. Even before..do i need to keep going? Bottom line is, two months isn't time enough to measure nothing, let alone to plan a replacement. Seriously, believe me. Assuming they would throw a project away for no reason, before the money starts cashing in, is simply illogical.
The only way all of this would make sense would be if Super was planned to have a short run from the get go, which doesn't sound likely at all.
Except Toei owns the timeslot, and Bandai is one of the big sponsors behind it. We can't ignore the fact Fuji tv is also part of the production committee either. Why do you think Tv Tokyo doesn't give up on Naruto when the show has been getting low ratings for many, many years now?voltlunok wrote:The issue is that we're looking at these things from a worldwide perspective and not from the perspective of Japan. So if the ratings are good enough and it keeps selling merchandising, Toei is free to keep it going for as long as they want to, following their best interests. They do care about popularity outside Japan. SS Omega would never run for two years if that wasn't the case.
Ok, that explains everything. That's what you expect and want to think, not what's going on. "The issue" is that you're looking at it from your own perspective alone, when you gotta look at the whole picture.voltlunok wrote:I do think the retelling of BoG and RoF may be the noose around Super's neck right now...I hope they decide to just skip the RoF section after the BoG stuff is done. Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion
Yeah, Toei's website went from saying 100 episodes to xx if I recall correctly, if it was a short series why not put 36 eps, then. I do agree with you on a whole too, seems people are overreacting way to much to this news.Araki wrote:The only way it would make sense would be if Super was planned to have a short run from the get go, which doesn't sound likely at all.

"The issue" is that you're looking at it from your own perspective alone.
#1 Fine yeah, foot in mouth moment for me. I'll own up to that. Cool, concede.
#2 I'm not 'assuming' the series isn't doing well, I'm not SAYING it's not doing well. The quote you took and let's not beat around the bush, took massively out of it's context to talk down to me, was me addressing people's "Well why would they end it so soon? Don't they know how big Dragon Ball is worldwide? It'd be crazy! It's a worldwide hit!" That's what I was addressing because the fun fact is, they don't care how big it is worldwide, that won't factor at all into a decision like replacing it which again, we don't know but whatever.
#3...Wow you come off as a condescending person in this last quote. Do you talk to everyone like this? Because it's rude, it's condescending and overall makes me wish to have zero discussion with you. But fine, let's talk this. The BoG retelling isn't killing the series but it's hurting it. Will it kill it? No. It's Dragon Ball it has the staying power to go through filler but it probably would have done much better if it started with something fresh. Specially since RoF is barely a few months old at this point and BoG only about 2 years old at this point, it's still fresh in people's minds and a retelling really feels unnecessary.
In conclusion, we don't know jack of what's going on, that's true. But that doesn't give you the right to talk down to someone like you're sitting upon some throne speaking to your filthy peasants. If you wanna have a discussion, fine, lose the tude but till then have a nice day and adieu.

Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion
People seem to forget that merchandise sales come first to kids shows. Toei even admit that they care more about merchandise sales over ratings. Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger (The sentai show used for Power Rangers: Dino Charge at the moment) had the worst ratings in the Sentai series even lower then Go-Busters, but the show had amazing toy sales. If Super gets good merchandise sales even with bad ratings, Super will keep on going until they feel like that they are done with it. GT had both bad ratings and lackluster merchandise sales. That's most likely why they didn't do a sequel to GT after 1997.

I think it's very premature to consider that Super may get the plug pulled on it considering the show is still in its infancy. The future of Super will really hinge on how good the toy sales are when the Universe 6 arc begins.
Spoiler:
Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion
How much merch have they really been putting out for Super yet? Or are they waiting to put out the bulk of it once Uni 6 starts? I might just not be looking in the right places, but I haven't seen that much merchandise for Super online.Lord Beerus wrote:I think it's very premature to consider that Super may get the plug pulled on it considering the show is still in its infancy.
