Dragon Ball Kai - Thanos Fandub (Apply Within!)

Post by Thanos » Tue Aug 18, 2009 3:32 am

First off, I'm aware there's an existing Dragon Ball Kai fandub here on Daizex. However, I think I have something to offer.

A couple years ago, I posted a fandub topic of the first Dragon Ball Z movie. While that was going well, I realized there wasn't really much need for a redub of it. Also, I was younger and less experienced with the original Japanese material as well as video-editing and production.

I've written up an entire script (very close to the original dialogue, as close as can be while matching lip-flaps) of the first episode, and I'm ready to get rolling with it. All I need are, of course... voices! Unlike the other DBK fandub, my intention is to have voices to be as close to the original Japanese voices as possible, as well as character names. This also gives a chance to those who weren't able to squeeze into the voice cast for the other fandub to do some voice work.

I've tried to get in contact with MasakoX from TeamFourStar, but unfortunately, he hasn't logged onto his MySpace in a over a year.

So, here's the voices I need:

The Narrator
Son Goku
Son Gohan
Grandpa Gohan
Raditz
Piccolo
Saiyajin Scientist 1
Saiyajin Scientist 2
Freeza
Bulma
Kuririn
Muten Roshi
Chichi
Farmer with Shotgun
Umigame

I intend to upload each episode on a high quality streaming website, and for download. If you can do a voice that sounds like a character from the Japanese version, please apply! Just post or PM me a link to download your voice sample clip, and if it's close, you're on the team.

I await your applies.

So it's pretty much going to be a repeat of FUNimations Season 3 dub then?...

You should be looking for voices that suit the roles, not voices that are cheap imitations.

FUNi's Season 3 dub characters don't sound anything like the originals. I'm not looking for "cheap imitations", I'm looking for voices that sound like the original ones. That's all. Is it so wrong to want to stay close to the source material as possible?

I meant how they were hired based on how their voices sounded, not how they could act.

No, but you don't need the voices to be the same to capture the spirit and essence of a character.

It's going to be hard to find people whose voices sound nearly identical to the Japanese ones, and even harder to find similar voices with the ability to act. I doubt you could get a believable Nozawa imitation in English...

I'm saying that you are setting the bar too high, and will most likely end up in disappointment. If I were you, I would try to find voices that give me the same impact as the original, it doesn't necessarily need to sound the same, or even similar at all.

But that's just my fiddy cent. This is your project after all, not mine! :P

There's a difference between imitating and adapting.

Anyway hasn't this been done before? I could have sworn there was a Kai project in the works already. I hope you're ready for a lot of bullshit and stress Thanos because these projects are usually clusterfucks. Good luck I hope you're up for this.

Edit: I'm an idiot you already mentioned the preexisting dub.

Yes, you are correct. However, unless I am incorrectly inferring this, he wants to find people who sound similar to the Japanese voices.

Changes can be made without affecting the overall style and feel the original attained. Sometimes changes are even necessary.

If you can capture the same spirit as the Japanese voice actors using a similar voice why not? However I do agree voices like Nozawa would sound awkward in English so it's not the best idea in every instance.

Well there is nothing inherently wrong with that. I'm just saying that he shouldn't be basing the whole dub around that as it would be a very difficult and arduous task.

Personally I feel acting should be taken into account first and foremost. I don't care if the V.A sounds EXACTLY like Japanese Vegeta if he reads his lines like 3rd season Sean I would have a terrible time watching the dub.

That's just another issue with these fandub projects. (I really don't mean to shit all over this idea I just see these so often in various fandoms.) We get really bad voice actors because...well they aren't professional and any average Joe could get a part if he's the only person that applied for the role.

Then we get into the issues where people can't contact each other which is the biggest problem which arises with these projects. more then 15 roles that's more then 15 people all over the world you have to expect to be on time with recording the lines and sending them to you and not letting personal affairs get in the way of the project.

Hope none of this discourages you, Thanos.

But, see what you can put together. Maybe I'll help you out with some roles when I get a new computer.
