Real life World Martial Arts Tournament

Post by SparkyPantsMcGee » Tue Sep 01, 2009 9:23 pm

Since Dragonball I've always wanted to watch(or hell participate in) a real life martial arts tournament. I know there is something like when you take a martial arts class. However everything is limited and with pads. Besides most of the attention is on kata form and simple fighting techniques rather than one on one matches. I have always wanted something to the style of Dragonball(without the tiles maybe), something with: No pads, limited rules(obviously no cheap shots to the groin) and ring outs. Any thoughts on this, or am I just crazy?
...Wait what are you doing? Are you still reading this? I finished what I had to say, why don't you move on to the next post?

I think it would turn into just a sumo match with people just tryign to push people off the stage instead of actual martial arts.

Not if the rings were big enough. Though, you are still probably right.

I wouldn't be surprised if one existed somewhere, but not on a global scale like DB's.

I seen some time ago Mixed Martial Arts on Extreme channel........ It was extremely boring, guys ''with lot of skills???'' were lying on the ground for half an hour...... Everyone, no matter if it's Karate, taekwondo, kung fu, Jiujitsu, box etc. they are lying on each other and it looks quite gay. Sorry to fans of Greco-Roman wrestling style

Old UFC matches from the '90s (before they had gloves and when there were less rules) are the closest thing you'll find to that. You'll find, however, that real humans are a lot more fragile than Dragonball characters and fighting exactly the way you see it in the Tenka'ichi Budokai would make for short careers. Heck, professional Muay Thai fighters only have a career lasting roughly three years due to how hard the conditioning and fighting is on the human body.

However, if you want to see something more reminiscent of the Tenka'ichi Budokai in terms of the arena, some of the rules, and how the fights generally play out (mainly striking matches with KO's and Ringouts) you'll wanna check out the WCL (Chuck Norris' fighting league) and maybe check out some Sanda (a.k.a. Sanshou) matches. If you're looking for something with less protective gear but with similar rules, you'll wanna find some Kyokushin matches (read up on Kyokushin; those guys are almost Dragonball durable). In their own ways, these rules, styles, and leagues remind me of the tournament fighting in Dragonball. Also, they don't "hug on the ground forever" in those styles. It's much more dynamic.

While if you search hard enough you're likely to find some fight videos that has the same lack-of-gloves and the liberal rules as the Tenka'ichi Budokai in real life, you're not likely to find participants who are extremely skilled and respectable. Those who have professional level skill and want to retire in decent health after several years of hard competition usually go for the real deal instead of fighting in underground clubs.

I count stuff like UFC fighting in a toooooooootal differet category as the WMAT in DragonBall.

UFC is more to get a person to tap out; Db is more skill based and knocking the opponent out of the ring.

Don't worry, I have thought of this as well.

Old school UFC, like stated, is pretty close, back when everyone didn't have the same skills and the matches divulged into ground game every time. But for the most part it wasn't all that exciting. Maybe a fight here or there would be cool, but most of the time, even back then, the matches sucked. Not to say UFC now sucks, I watch it and enjoy it, but sometimes the fights are awful.

As for a real life Tenkaichi Budokai, I would have to say it would have to be like half fake. Not like Pro Wrestling, but it would have to have bizarre rules that encouraged theatrics.

If there ever was a real life world martial arts tournament, I figure it would be something akin to the large underground fighting tournament that took up a major story arc in Grappler Baki. There were no ring-outs in that competition, and the characters tended to borderline on superhuman, but it still gives you a good idea of what a real life Tenkaichi Budoukai would be like.

Most of these types of fights take place in peoples backyards.LOL. But you can watch muay thai competitions. That is as close as you are going to get.

You should see if there's a Kyokushin dojo in your area. I'd definitely go to one if there were one reasonably close to me.
