Harukanaru Densetsu music in Dragonball Kai

Post by VenomSymbiote » Mon Sep 07, 2009 2:45 pm

You know, I'm so glad that once I finish this post, I won't be going crazy anymore over this. =D

Because of my ongoing project, I like to think that I've learned how to spot similarities in music pretty well. Therefore, you can imagine how much turmoil I went for this. XD

So, in several episodes of Dragonball Kai, you hear this piece of BGM, which is titled "Scampering Battle".

Now, when I first heard this piece, I thought "Man, this sounds very familiar", but I couldn't quite place where I had heard it before.

As time went on, the piece kept being used, and every time it did, I kept trying to figure out where I had heard before.

Soon, I narrowed it down. I knew I had heard the track in the DS game Dragonball Z Harukanaru Densetsu (Or for those with other versions, Goku Densetsu OR Harukanaru Goku Densetsu). However, at the time, I didn't own the soundtrack (Which was incredibly difficult to find, as Rocketman will tell you), and the game was wayyy too difficult for me to simply play to where I heard this track. So, I simply waited until I could get the OST to the game.

And once I did, the mystery was solved.

It's worthwhile noting that Kenji Yamamoto did the music for both Kai and the game, so it's not too surprising that he took a previous track and tweaked it, although in my expierence, this hasn't happaned before. Normally, it's that a song from the show was used in the video games (Such as with the Legacy Of Goku games and Sparking games), or another artist had one a song which was somewhat copied from an existing song, such as with the various homages that we've found. That's why I find it a little odd, but not impossible.

The song that Kenji Yamamoto composed for the game was called simply "Vs. Frieza".

Listen to them both, and you'll see that the songs are related.

"Scampering Battle" is sped up faster then the original, and at first, it doesn't seem to be connected at all. But it is.

In short, Mr. Yamamoto took a song from HK and used it in Kai. Not too surprising, but I felt you guys should know. What do you think?

He's done similar things with the Budokai music in the past.

I'm kind of disappointed that he's re-using tracks. =/
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Yes, I believe I've heard that somewhere before.

Really? Why? I mean, at least in this case, it's only one track.

Well, considering he's been caught plagiarizing in the past (Battle Point Unlimited), it seems he lacks originality. However, I'm probably just being harsh because I don't care for the way the music is used in Kai.

Bullshit to this.

He's done soooo many great tracks in the past, things in Final Bout, Burst Limit, and the Super Butoden series come to mind. Not to mention he was the arranger of Cha La Head Cha La. Most of the iconic tracks in the franchise have come from this man. So what if he takes a little inspiration from other tracks?

It's a 90%-10% ratio in terms of originality and inspiration. A lot of Japanese composers are like this; take TAPPY for example. He created one of the most iconic themes in video game history...turns out he was "inspired" by Georgy Sviridov's classical piece named "The Snowstorm". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYQQ1PZHF8U&fmt=18

Not uncommon for Japanese composers. Hell, I'd take it as a compliment if some one was inspired by my music. :) No ape-shit fits like "Huh, that sounds like my song...LAWSUIT, LAWSUIT, SUE, MONEEEY!!"

Well, "The Clouds Of War Spread" was noted, from the very first episode's airing, as a remix of "The Man Called 'C'" from Budokai.

And though nobody who knows Budokai's music better than me ever seems to answer my question, "Danger Afoot" (an unreleased piece that's used when Vegeta is giving Goku that speech about "elite Saiyans," just before the two dive into battle) also sounds like one of the bits from Budokai, during the cut scenes that build up to the battle.
BGM forever! If only more people paid attention to it... well, I intend to change that.
