Piccolo Training Gohan - Could it have gone a different way?

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

Piccolo Training Gohan - Could it have gone a different way?

Post by DNA » Mon Jan 18, 2010 6:39 am

Hello all! I'm recently re-watching the whole series via my recently acquired Dragon Box and I just started the Saiyan Arc's filler saga.

The original objective of Piccolo training Gohan was not only to make him a match against the Saiyans, but also to make him a heir to the Mazoku, mostly because Piccolo Jr. was already sensing his death. Now, imagine if things went a bit differently and instead of Piccolo Jr. softening up, Gohan would harden his heart and slowly become evil like his mentor. I started imagining an anti-hero Gohan that cast away his own family, I imagined him as a teenager (Buu Arc Era) either with his orange gi with ma symbol and the sword or an adult variation of his purple gi with colar. Maybe he would be the one ending up controlled by Babidi!

This is the kind of things I would like to see more in Dragon Ball, kinda like the "what if's" of Marvel comics.

What do you think people? Give me some thoughts.

I think that would totally be bad ass. I sensed a little neglect toward his family from Gohan but not enough for him to actually cast them away, so your theory could have been possible if enough evil was in Gohan's heart. That would be an awesome what-if for the next game.

That would have been freaking awesome. And it is a distinct possibility. Of course, Chi-Chi would get mad since her son turned into a delinquent insead of a scholar.

Well, being the heir to the Mazoku Clan, I can't see this Gohan really caring about that :P

He may've still kept some of his purity inside him and maintained memories of his loving mother (yes, she was loving). Like Super Boo with Mr. Satan.

Anyway, what may happen is that; say, hypothetically, they succeed in destroying the Saiyan threat before Goku gets there. Piccolo would proceed to attempt to take over the entire planet, and Son Gohan would somewhat reluctantly join him in his plans. (Piccolo would make Gohan a slightly new outfit, like the one he originally, but with the demon symbol from his Goku-style gi). Piccolo would succeed in becoming ruler of the planet, fulfilling his father's goal once again. Piccolo and Gohan kill all those who attempt to oppose them, including the Z-Warriors. Chi-Chi confronts Piccolo & Gohan and tries to stop Gohan from joining Piccolo. Gohan contemplates it, as he knows that Piccolo is bad and he still loves his mother. But then Piccolo kills Chi-Chi, and at first Gohan berates him for doing so, but then Piccolo tells him that he can't be soft, even on his family.

When Son Goku arrives, Piccolo attempts to make Gohan kill Goku, so Goku can feel the pain of being betrayed and killed by his own son. But Gohan can't bring himself to do it. Piccolo would try to attack Gohan in rage, but Goku saves him in time and defeats Piccolo, but doesn't kill him. Piccolo retreats, but before so vows that he will make Gohan heir of the Mazoku.

Afterwards, Goku, Gohan (who heard of the Dragon Balls on Namek) and Bulma travel to Planet Namek to collect the Dragon Balls and revive their dead friends. Meanwhile, Piccolo trains to become stronger to beat Goku.

I feel like making a fanfic and expanding on this story now.

I wonder what I'd have for a title...

But if Piccolo is not dead why are they going to Namek? Besides, Krilin is the only one who knows that there are Dragon Balls in Namek because Vegeta mentioned it.

Also you just made Gohan go back to being good. That defeated the whole purpose.

They'd be going to Namek because Kuririn and Chaozu wouldn't be able to come back to life with Earth's Dragon Balls because they had already died once before. And Tenshinhan would stay behind because he's butt buddies with Chaozu. The only one who could be brought back is Yamcha, and even then, it would be pointless wasting their only wish on Yamcha rather than bringing back everyone Piccolo killed.

Kuririn, Gohan and Piccolo were all there when Vegeta mentioned that there were Dragon Balls on Namek. Gohan didn't remember it at first, but then when they were in Bulma's helicopter or whatever, Gohan said that he thinks he heard that too. He would've remembered eventually, because of the oh-so-helpful plot convenience that helped Toriyama out of numerous hard plot situations before.

I don't really think that Gohan has it in him to become evil. But yeah, I did kind of defeat the purpose. Sorry.

EDIT: OK, so what could happen instead is everything up until the bit where Gohan confronts Goku. Gohan tells Goku that he's always been too soft on him, and for that reason he hasn't been able to unlock his true potential. So Gohan & Goku battle. Gohan puts up a good fight, but then Goku ups his game and attacks back. Enraged, Gohan unleashes a mighty blast that kills Goku.

Then, Piccolo and Gohan continue their rule of Earth.

How, exactly, would they stop Vegeta without Goku's help, and do it so quickly that they have time to take over the world, kill the others, and have that whole scene with ChiChi (who likewise had enough time to hear about all this, track them down and travel to where they were) before Goku gets back?

Awesome idea for a fanfic but I have a few problems with it. Firstly I think it was stated by Kami that Piccolo was not a member of the Demon Clan after he killed Raditz because he was able to cross over to the afterlife. Secondly would Piccolo have sacrificed himself to save Gohan or would he instead let Gohan get hit by Nappa's blast?

This would be a great idea for an AU fanfiction!

My own two cents on the canon however is that Piccolo (Jr.) was already becoming good even before the fight with Raditz perhaps because he was a step removed from his father, Piccolo Daimou. With Piccolo Daimou, he had no choice other than evil and chaos whereas, Piccolo was no longer the evil side of his original self but was removed enough from the evil inherent in his father to make his own choices and for the first part of his life (pre-23rd Budokai Tenkaichi) he was simply devoted to revenge. Still it is possible he could have made the "evil" choice and wish to continue his father's will but even then he was not the pure demon that Piccolo Daimou was, but a seperate being. It would have been interesting how Piccolo would been able to brainwash Gohan to become his heir . . . actually it's kinda creepy. :|

I don't think Gohan had it in him. Plus, the reason he liked Piccolo in the first place is that he sensed the innate goodness in him. He wouldn't have taken to him if he was bad.

He was kidnapped and abused. It's not like he had a choice. Hating Piccolo but still being forced to look at him like a role model could help fuel is rage and anger, from there is just a question of Piccolo manipulating him.

I've been wanting to do likewise for a few years.
What do you think people? Give me some thoughts.
First time I saw the series I thought for sure that Gohan would become a bad-guy under Piccolo instead of Piccolo becoming the good-guy and that the events after Vegeta was defeated would center around the Piccolo and Gohan combo causing problems for Goku and the others.

My fic idea for it was pretty much the same as the series up through Freeza, for the most part. For changes, though, Gohan wouldn't be afraid at the fight with Nappa and Vegeta, first of all. Piccolo would still get killed in the fight, though not from protecting Gohan, just from fighting hard agaisnt Nappa. Then Gohan wouldn't get along nearly as well with Krillin or Bulma on Namek and be a little less caring in general(like not rushing in to rescue Dende). In the end things would go mostly the same up through Freeza, just with Gohan's personality difference. Goku would still go SSJ and still beat Freeza and everyone would go back to Earth.

After that Gohan would spend most of his time with Piccolo instead of the others, training so they could both be strong enough to take over the Earth eventually (they know with Goku as an SSJ it wont be easy). I'd leave the Android stuff mostly the same, just have Piccolo and Gohan acting a lot like Vegeta (maybe even Vegeta's dead and gone from Namek and Piccolo and Gohan take his place in terms of "grr, I kill Goku, go away stupid machines" type stuff). And then, yeah, Majin Gohan in the Buu Saga (and maybe Majin Piccolo, too~ so it'd be both of them vs. SSJ2 Goku).

At least, that's one of my ideas. I've had a few of them. XD Where that one would go after that, I'm not sure....

[quote="Piccolo Daimaoh"]Yes, Piccolo was not a member of the Demon Clan, but his aim was to avenge his father and continue his legacy. It's not that he was necessarily part of the Demon Clan himself (like Piccolo Daimao wasn't a Demon King), but the fact of the matter is he wanted to leave something behind in Gohan.

And, in that fanfic, instead of Gohan pussying out when Piccolo tells him to fire at Nappa, Gohan would fire a Masenko at Nappa, thus injuring him and making it easier for the Z-Warriors to gang up on him and defeat him. I haven't quite worked out how Vegeta would be defeated by the Z-Warriors without Goku.

Not all fanfics have to make sense, really. I need to plan more.
