Dragon Ball Z Kai Volume 1 Discussion

Post by G1Ravage » Sun May 02, 2010 1:12 am

First up, the packaging has reversible art. The one side has Goku on the front and the usual disc information on the back, while the reverse side has Vegeta on the front, and the episode titles on the back. Here are the episode titles:

1) Prologue to Battle! The Return of Goku!
2) The Enemy is Goku's Brother?! The Secret of the Mighty Saiyan Warriors!
3) A Life or Death Battle! Goku and Piccolo's Desperate Attack!
4) Run in the Afterlife, Goku! The One Million Mile Snake Way!
5) Wilderness Survival! A Moonlit Night Awakens Gohan!
6) The End of Snake Way! King Kai's Bizarre Test!
7) The Battle with Ten-Times Gravity! Goku's Race Against the Clock!
8) Shenron Appears! The Saiyans Arrive Sooner Than Expected!
9) Yamcha's Struggle! The Terrible Saibamen!
10) Sit Tight, Chiaotzu! Tien's Screaming Tri-Beam!
11) Will Goku Make It In Time?! Three Hours Until the Battle Resumes!
12) Farewell, Piccolo! Goku's Furious Counterattack!
13) The Power of Kaio-ken! Goku vs. Vegeta!

More to come.

The opening credits use the Japanese logo, without the Z.

The title card uses "Tenshinhan"?

Nah, that was likely the forum's filter.

Also, a curiosity. "Kaio-ken"? There's nothing wrong with that, but I thought the official FUNimation rendering of the name was "Kaioken", as seen on the captions for games like Burst Limit.

Okay...the logo on the eye-catchers uses the altered logo with the Z.

We get "Makankosappo", we get "Kienzan", but then we get "Tri-Beam"?

The translation of the Japanese voice cast during the credits uses a mixture of English and Japanese names...Son Goku and Son Gohan are there, but it also uses Frieza and Krillin.

Okay, mistake on FUNi's part. Only episode 1's opening has the original logo. Episode 2 has the logo with the Z.

Pretty enraged about Tri-Beam over here. I don't understand why, if so much great attention was paid to the script, that they would make such a glaring mistake to not give this attack it's proper translation?

I think I've figured out the method to their madness.
Innagadadavida wrote:I see what they're doing. They're keeping things consistent with their dub of Dragon Ball. Tri-beam was used in Dragon Ball. Tenshinhan (what the fuck, we can't even circumvent the word filter now?) Shinhan was used in Dragon Ball. Distructo Disc and Special Beam Cannon were not. Neither was Gohan's voice actress.

And the new Bulma sounds exactly the same as the old one.

So basically, a new viewer could go straight from the English dub of Dragon Ball, to the English dub of Dragon Ball Z Kai with no continuity issues. I kind of like that move.

I guess that would explain it... Kind of a let down, but at least the dub of Dragon Ball was pretty good, so at least aiming for that would be alright.

I'm through the first two episodes.

The dub is really, really good. Sure, Goku is still pronounced with the wrong emphasis, but the acting is top-notch. In particular, I like the way Sean Schemmel and Chris Sabat are delivering their lines as Goku and Piccolo. Sounds much closer to the Japanese performance, despite their voices not sounding drastically different from the original English dub.

The narrator is a mixed bag. I like how he sounds like a cross between the Ocean DBZ narrator, Doc Harris, and the Ocean DB narrator, Jim Conrad. What I don't like, is how they kept some narrator-ish lines from the previous dub, like "Last time, on Dragon Ball Z Kai", or "find out, on the next Dragon Ball Z Kai". I'm pretty sure the Japanese narrator never says that.

The previews are wonderful. Hearing Schemmel, with his new line delivery, saying, "Hey! It's me, Goku!", and delivering the Japanese-style, two-lined titles, is really awesome.

8000.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Didn't they do that a long time ago with the next episode previews on Cartoon Network? That's always been kind of rad.

(by the way if anyone happens to find an archive of those let me know)
