Xyex's Sprite Theater!

Post by Xyex » Sun Jun 06, 2010 6:29 am

Lame topic title is lame, I know. :P

Anyway, following making my avatar (<3) I saw how awesome it was and decided I wanted to make another one. And so, with a vague idea of where I was going in mind, I started. And then I realized it was going to take forever, and a singular GIF was out of the question. So I decided to break it into multiple parts, and the first one is done!

P.S. If anyone knows of a really good (and FREE) program for making animated GIFs that would work on ancient PC, let me know. My copy of Animation Shop 3 is dead so I'm using Virtual Dub to make these. Which is fine for when there's no text, but whenever there is text, I can only keep it up to be read by replicating the frame (which then bloats the file size) instead of putting in a frame specific delay. :?

You could try MS Gif Animator. It's incredibly simple though, and I'm not sure exactly what kind of functions you'll need. You can set the time that each frame displays for though.

I used to use Adobe Imageready, it's included with Adobe Photoshop, even in older versions. You can through it edit images directly in Photoshop. Using itself, the functions are: Layers, simpler editing, cutting, pen tool, fill tool ect. So it's a very good tool for making GIFs.

One advice though, try to make the dialouge and bubbles to show longer, so that we actually have time to read them. :P

Yeah, I've got Paintshop Pro for making the sprite edits, and the individual frames. It's more than good enough for it. I just need a better means of making GIFs. XD

And yeah, I know the text isn't displaying for very long, but as I said I currently have to have multiple instances of the same frame to make it display, which bloats the file size. For instance, this first part has 205 frames of animation. Only 130 of them are unique frames I saved, however.

Cool, I'll check it out. Being able to set individual frame delays is the only feature I really *need*

I use GIF Movie Gear for making animated avatars and such.
It also allows you to set delays for single frames.

GIF Movie Gear looks good, but I'm a cheapskate (and broke besides) and don't feel like having something only to have it stop working in a month. :?

Fortunately, MS GIF Animator is sufficient for my timing needs (though it's image preview is horrible). This is good, because part two has a lot more text than part one. Speaking of part two, it is done!
