Yeah, they can. Japanese keyboards are basically the same as our keyboards, so everything is typed in using the roman alphabet. In other words, they use romanizations on a daily basis.

(Yeah, ok, there were keyboards in like the 80's that had all kana characters on them, but that doesn't count...)

Yeah, I kinda think the "ch" words benefit from the letter c. @_@;

Mhmm. In order to write up my examples I actually had to write out "gokuu" and "gokou" before my Japanese font turned them into hiragana. So.. why anyone in Japan would think Gokou is correct for ごくう .. well. That's just beyond me. :P

Then why would Bandai romanize Goku's name as Gokou? It doesn't make any sense. If you cannot accredit this to language misunderstandings, then what can you accredit it to?

Dear Toei, Bandai and Shueisha,
Why do you choose to romanize the name 「孫悟空」 as "Son Gokou," even though the correct romanization would clearly be "Son Gokuu"?

Because we freakin' feel like it!!1!11!!

Well, there you have it! The official answer to all our romanization woes...

I've got it set on a whole bunch of lame spellings, like "Gokou" and "Hercule". ^^;;
You should add Oozaru to that list. I've spelt it wrong quite a few times before. Ozarru... Ozarruu... see?
Because Kaio-Ken just doesn't cut it anymore.

Heh. Heh. Clever. Alas, Toriyama's truly intended pun on Bulma's name.
