The "Steve Simmons" podcast episode

Post by TheBlackPaladin » Tue Aug 31, 2010 11:15 am

First off, my apologies to the moderators if I'm posting in the wrong place. I *think* I am based on what I looked at, but if I'm not, then you have my apologies in advance. Anyway, I'm trying to find the podcast episode where Daizenshuu EX interviewed Steve Simmons, the head translator for FUNimation. Does anyone know which one it was?

PS: If there is a more proper way or place to ask this, feel free to point it out and I'll gladly take note of it.
A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

It was the big one-year anniversary episode back on #0052.

Right before the orange bricks. How fun!

I would absolutely love if you guys tried to get him back on again. That was such an awesome episode. It would be so cool if you guys could shoot the shit about translating Dragon Ball again. He's probably super busy but man that would be such a thrill. Maybe for episode 300 or something?

Thanks a lot, Mike! That really was a good interview, he's an awesome translator/subtitle-writer. This one guy I saw on YouTube said in complete sincerity that Steve Simmons "quite clearly sucks," and his reasoning was that the subtitles of the English release of Dragon Ball Kai call it "Dragon Ball Z Kai" even though there's no "Z" in the Japanese title and that there's no "Z" when the next-episode preview narrators (usually Goku) say the title. I prefer the dub normally and even I got angry at that! I've still watched the Japanese version pretty extensively and Simmons has a great ability to add character and diversity to the characters he subtitles, rather than just making them sound bland and like the same kind of dialogue comes from every character (like the subs did on the three uncut Pioneer/Ocean movies...they had the better dub, but not the better sub).

Man, I love that episode. I think we need another one. Maybe this time it could be an interview with Clyde Mandelin. Or better yet, have both DB translators!
