Though a different episode, I felt pretty similar about the fight between #17 and Piccolo. In Z, it was alright and a couple cool things happened to spice it up. In Kai it was pretty epic and kept me excited even though I already knew the outcome.

I dunno about you guys...but did anyone get the feeling that Mr. Wakamoto wasn't really trying?

I haven't seen the full episode, so I can't comment too much. But just by seeing Cell's expressions and actions, Mr. Wakamoto's delivery looks really off in regards to this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6mCqSwKctI

Especially during his massive shout. It seems like all they did was just up the volume on his voice and add an echo, as opposed to him sounding like he's actually shouting at the top of his lungs. :\

Yeah, I mentioned this elsewhere...but he really wasn't trying too hard on that yelling. The entire cast has been a little wonky all series long. I get the feeling their director is either inexperienced or one of the cheaper types who is only hired to get it done quickly and can be controlled by the top brass.

I know during the Shin Kikô-Hô scene I kept expecting him to...actually yell. In Dragon Ball Z every noise he made was classic Wakamoto screaming. That "Onore~!!!!!!" was so underplayed in Dragon Ball Kai.

Sure, Wakamoto's getting kind o' old...but it wasn't three or so years ago he was playing The Emperor in Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion and was his usual self. I hope he cleans up in time for Perfect Cell. :(

Yes, I'm a Kai supporter but I won't be a biased fan. Wakamoto's scream to #18 scene was most definitely a step down from his Z delivery. I'm really worried his perfect Cell rage will not equal his Z performance.

Well it's been over 15 years since his last performance as Cell, his voice can't be what it used to be.

Hell I'm surprised he didn't tear his vocal chords apart by now with all the heavy yelling roles he does. It's amazing he can still yell, let alone voice act at all.

He voices Cell in all of the video games. In recent years alone that's the 'Budokai' series, the Sparking series, Super DBZ, TAG VS, and probably others I am forgetting about.

The Sengoku Basara anime isn't very old, yet his Oda Nobunaga is absolutely amazing.

The end of that clip shows he can still do powerful screams as he did as Cell in Z.

Oh dear, you're right. I have to assume, then, that he is either not caring to try or the direct is saying "Don't be awesome!" >_<

Though don't get me wrong, awesome screams/less awesome screams vs. mind numbing pacing, Kai still takes the cake.
Toei really were careless with how they handled the audio masters from the Z anime. Wonder what some Z supporters would say if Toei managed to remaster the Z recordings into stereo for Kai.

Gawd it sounded like that... He sounded like one of the people yelling political campaign stuff in those little cars with the big speakers on the sides of them. He was just talking normally with EPIC ECHO effects added in.
