If TeamFourStar dubbed DBZ...
If TeamFourStar dubbed DBZ...
How would you feel about this? They would dub it using the Kai uncensored script and make a legitimate attempt to dub it following the Kai episode count. They would use their voice from the parody character while using a serious script. Which voices would you prefer to their Funimation Dragon Ball Z Kai counterpart?
While their voices are good for a parody I still prefer the Funimation voices for a majority of the characters. But here are the ones I would maybe give a chance to...
Goku: MasakoX does a very good job at playing the silly part of Goku and retains quite a bit of child-like charm. Sean's Kai performance does the same so this one is a toss up.
ReCoome: He has a serious voice. It is somewhat intimidating and sounds like it fits the character. Better than Sabat making Recoome sound like a person with a head injury.
... and I think that is about all for me.

I can't see them taking any of it seriously.

Re: If TeamFourStar dubbed DBZ...
A few of the voices like MasakoX's Goku (and family) and LittleKuriboh's Freeza are very good and, if properly applied, would be great in a serious dub. But they're a minority, and the majority of the Abridged cast, while also very good, are specifically crafted to be funny and parody in nature. So on the whole, it wouldn't really work.

Re: If TeamFourStar dubbed DBZ...
Well, the voices/performances in Abridged seem to be, for the most part, an intentional imitation/exaggeration of the Ocean and/or Funimation voices. They're not nearly as experienced as the cast of the actual dub. However, if treating the material seriously, I could imagine some of them would still be appropriate for their roles. MasakoX's Goku, for instance, or Megami33's Bulma. LittleKuriboh's Freeza is pretty good, too, on its own.
I think it's pretty difficult to know whether it would work or not. I wouldn't rule it out, but I have my doubts.

I also want to state that the guys all do terrific jobs doing voices. They really do. I don't want any of them getting their feelings hurt if they see this because they all do great. It is just that the Funi cast is made of professionals hired by a million dollar company.
I also think that LittleKuriboh does a great job as Freeza. Chris Ayres only slightly edges him out on this one. That is REALLY saying something.

Re: If TeamFourStar dubbed DBZ...
Whoever did the scene with Ten's scene with the Kikoho on Nappa was totally awesome and intense. Even for a parody series, the guy voicing Ten took that scene seriously and totally nailed it.
Re: If TeamFourStar dubbed DBZ...
While I can see people agreeing with the general direction and idea behind some of the voices, I don't think there's any denying that they're simply not as seasoned actors as those currently in Funimation's stable.
And there's the fact that as penguintruth said, aside from a few characters, most of them are imitating Funimation's voices anyway.
Finally, I doubt anyone's going to get their feelings hurt over this thread. I think it's fairly clear that, as with the Dragon Ball manga itself, a lot of the fans are taking this more seriously than its creators. Hell, they're probably flattered to be compared to the actual cast at all.

Re: If TeamFourStar dubbed DBZ...
I love Masako X's son family voices so far. I'd be interested to hear him try some of Goku's more serious lines, just to see how well he can pull them off... I'd say he's got happy-go-lucky Goku down better than Kai Schimmal. But I disclaim that by saying I've seen a whole two episodes of Kai dubbed.
Lil Kuribo's Freeza is great for a parody, but I'm a bit cautious about saying he'd be good for a serious dub. Better than Linda Young's Freeza, hands down. But... Hmm.
So far, I like the TFS voices for the Ginyu Force. Jheese and Burter still sound "...?", but I wouldn't complain about them being used (those are based on the dub versions, though...?).
I especially like TFS Ginyu and Guldo. They sound shockingly realistic (Ginyu in particular), and are still distinct as casual voices. True, Guldo has a mysticish drama to his delivery, but I wouldn't complain about that so much unless it just clashed horribly with a serious dub.
Tenshinhan's final Kikoho on Nappa was amazing. I mean, despite the Pokemon jokes and "ridiculous Nappa", I have a hard time not treating that scene as a serious attempt at dubbing.
Of course, they've stated that their goal with Tenshinhan was to be overly serious. I'm not sure how well that portrayal would work in the series as a whole. I would be quite interested to hear a TFS version of the 22nd tournament, though. =P
TFS Yajirobe and Karin sound... ur... about the same as FUNi. So I wouldn't complain.
Obviously, voices like Popo, Kami and King Kai are exagerated voices that wouldn't work in a serious adaptation. Well... Blue Popo...
Bulma's easily on par with the past dub actors. Not sure about how she compares to Rial, though...
I'm actually pretty happy with current FUNi ChiChi, and TFS Piccolo and Vegeta sound better only because they have so many scenes with casual and humored delivery that wouldn't be found in a serious dub. So yeah... I'd still go with Sabat Piccolo and Vegeta, until someone takes the gravel out of Vegeta's voice. XD
Dangit, TFS Nappa has become the character for me. Knowing full well that he works solely in parody form.

To put they that seem to be most popular to the test...

(Yeah, I only in replying to this thread started wondering how they intend to handle that scene.

I'd like to take a few moments to say that, we're definitely not professionals. We're very much dedicated to our work and doing the best with can with our show, but nobody on the team would say we're more qualified, if qualified at all, to dub the original series than FUNimation.
That said... is it true that Plan to Eradicate the Super Saiyans has not gotten a dub at all? ;3

Please do it. It would be the perfect time to see what you guys can do when you are not being funny. I along with others are very interested in seeing what you could do while trying to do a legitimate dub.KaiserNeko wrote:I'd like to take a few moments to say that, we're definitely not professionals. There was a fandub a while back (Scott Morgan was working on the music, wasn't he?). I don't know what became of it; I only saw the first part.
But yeah. A TFS version would r0x0rz.

Yep. But for the most part, these people weren't hired for the Kai dub because of their acting skills, but because they had played the same role in the old, cheap Z dub.Cootie wrote: But we are comparing TFS to their Kai efforts. Which, as I've stated time and again, is the biggest problem with the Kai dub.

Completely agreed. TFS took a generic bully villain and gave him a much more entertaining violent man-child personality. I wear my Ghost Nappa shirt with pride.caejones wrote:Dangit, TFS Nappa has become the character for me. Knowing full well that he works solely in parody form.
As for whether TFS could take on a serious dub...it's hard to say just given DBZ Abridged. They're perfect in their parody roles. They very well could do something more serious, but I haven't heard an example to go by. I'd love to hear them do samples of more straight, dramatic work just for fun if they're interested in branching out, but they're already the kings of their niche as far as I'm concerned.
And by "niche," I mean "millions of views."
I can see their parachutes.

Many of the Funimation VAs have established themselves as voice actors since their days starting DBZ. And some of the voice actors who didn't were replaced by people who did. Notice that Monica Rial is now Bulma? Remember the last role Tiffany Vollmer had besides Bulma?Adamant wrote:Yep. Good for them, and they should praise their lucky stars they were in the right place at the right time when Funi was looking for cheap workers for what turned out to, despite all the corner-cutting, which included hiring of these particular VAs, be a massive success and helping them get into the business. But that's not why they were hired for Kai.penguintruth wrote:Many of the Funimation VAs have established themselves as voice actors since their days starting DBZ.
Yep. Hence the "for the most part" comment. They should've continued in that direction.penguintruth wrote:And some of the voice actors who didn't were replaced by people who did. Notice that Monica Rial is now Bulma?
