Hidden Audio File on Budokai DVD?

Post by kei17 » Sat Apr 16, 2011 4:50 am

I found a strange file named "DBGM01" when I was ripping the audio files from Budokai 1 for PS2. It includes Cha-La-Head-Cha-La, which has a time signal in the beginning.

This kind of signal used to play at 7:00PM on Fuji TV, so I am sure that this Head-Cha-La is from the original broadcast. As far as I know, this audio file never played in the game. I wonder why they put this.

Ok, this is probably a noobish question, but how did you get filenames for tracks in DBZ Budokai? I used cube media player to extract the tracks from the game disc, but I have no filenames.

Use AFSExplorer to open the AFS file.

My first guess was that this was some sort of placeholder file they used early in the game's development... but there really isn't any reason why they wouldn't have had the master recording for the song to begin with. And even if they didn't, there's not much point in ripping the audio off an old VHS instead of just grabbing it off one of the three million CDs that has the song. :P
Another theory I had was that perhaps they intended to release footage from the original series as a bonus feature (this game was made before the Dragon Boxes, after all) and this is all that remains of it, but even then it seems strange that they would use a VHS rip instead of Toei's masters.

Out of curiosity though, I have two questions:
1) Which versions of the game have it? Is it only in the Japanese PS2 version, or all of them? What about the Gamecube version?
2) Was the file 64kbps to begin with, or did you compress it?

1) I have the JP version for PS2 only.
2) I compressed, but it sounds this bad before being compressed.

I just checked my PAL PS2 version with AFSExplorer, it's on there too--interestingly enough, the "proper" version of CHA-LA HEAD CHALA is on there too. Interestingly enough, that version is labeled DBGM00, meaning that the mystery version was actually added later! (On a sidenote, the European opening theme, which is just an edit of one of the in-game songs, is labelled DBGM02.)

I tried checking the other Budokai games for interesting things like this, but I can't get the filenames to show up in AFSExplorer, which makes it really hard to find a specific file. I really don't want to go through every single voice file just to see if there's some unused music lurking somewhere.

EDIT: I got a hold of an American Budokai 1... same deal there (even has the European opening DBGM02), except that the regular CHA-LA HEAD CHALA is of course replaced with Rock the Dragon.

Dang, you beat me to it 'cause I just found it on there as well. How peculiar.

I wish I could find the Gamecube version so I could check if it's still in there too. If they took it out, at least we know it wasn't supposed to be in there. But for all we know, there might actually be a feature in the game that uses this file, and we just haven't found it yet!

For example, in Shining Force (a Megadrive game from 1992, if you're not familiar with it), there's a hidden sound test mode. For years, people knew it existed thanks to a screenshot in the strategy guide, but the way to access it remained a mystery until fairly recently. And it turned out to be as simple as "beat the game, then when starting a new game or loading a save hold Down+START."

I have the Japanese GC version, but how does one check to see what files are on it?? It doesn't seem to work the same way as PlayStation games. :/

Probably can't, since they use those tiny disks, whereas PS2 games use regular DVDs.

I'm not quite certain, but I think that, at least back when the GC was still the current console, ripping games involved some complicated mod using the GC broadband adapter. In other words, it would be simpler to just download an existing rip, which I don't think is illegal if you own the game. Good luck finding one, though. :P

I can rip ISO of a GC disc. Maybe I'll get a copy of GC version someday.
