Dub Name Craziness!
I recently bought a series of Japanese gashapons off Ebay. Upon receiving and opening them, I noticed something quite funny/odd. The small boxes these figures came in are entirely in Japanese. Which is normal seeing as how they are Japanese products made for Japanese people. Each box also has the characters name written on it, but in English. This is also not very strange because from what I know English is a well-known language in Japan. The odd thing is that for characters like Krillin and Tien their dub names are used instead of the originals. This may seem very confusing but the following images will explain things easier.

Perhaps it is convenient just to use the dub names since they're in English anyway. It's safer than trying to spell it their own way, like what happened with Son Gok0u.
Still haven't found out how to bypass the filter...

Indeed. I figure they think of it this way. "These names were made by people who know English far better than us, they're probably better than what we've been trying to do. Let's just use the offical English names on stuff instead of trying to figure it out ourselves." So it's not too odd that the names seen in the dub are being addopted by the Japanese.

<Kaboom> Neither does Rita
<Xyex> Good point.

It's possible the Japanese like to be different just like us.
Many of us prefer the name Kuririn to Krillin, or Tenshinhan rather than Tien, and I guess it looks more 'official' rather than using an exact Romanji translation.

YAY! I´m not so newbie! *dances around, singing* Ok, maybe I´ll save the dancing and singing for a higher rank, but I can´t believe I just found out right now!Son Goku wrote:BTW Mirai Trunks´s Nr. 1 fan, look at where newbie was for you (join the club)
And back on-topic: I think it´s kind of ridiculus but there must be a reason for example:
Then again, the main reason I find it ridiculus is probably that I preffer "Kuririn" and "Tenshinan"...Gamingdevil wrote:It also seems that Tenshinhan or Kuririn would maybe be to long to fit on the box (especially Tenshinhan) so they'd have to make the letters smaller which wouldn't be al that nice.

According to people who matter, they are nowEl_Diablo wrote:Sad as in unhappy.
Those aren't the characters names.

But no really, "My Japanese collectable toys have somewhat US influences on them! World, ending!".

Then there is this picture, which somewhat sums up an argument that I can't say in words. The point being- If you know who someone else is talking about, what's the big deal? I mean, stupid shit like "Supaa saiyajin toronkusuuuu~kawaiimegatan" is just dumb, but using a more fluid translation or adaptation (that the Japanese, which these silly things are aimed at) won't care about isn't so bad. Suck it up, champ.
"What they're supposed to be" is entirely subjective depending on who you are and what you're doing. Since the original source was written in Japanese, and interpretations of those names are always up in arms about (Should it be literal? Should it be interpretational? Should it be something else for the sake of being something else?), I don't think it should really be an issue. I mean, take Gundam for example, with it's amazingly irratic, debatable romanization, official vs. non-official names, etc.El_Diablo wrote:Trunks and Piccolo are OK, since those are what they're names are meant to be.
But "Krillin"? ""Ti en?"
One piece of merchandise might say one thing, another might say another- just accept both, it seems like a very insignificant thing to get hung up over
