Avatar guidelines

Can anyone point me to some guidelines for what's acceptable to use as an avatar? I know you shouldn't have NSFW stuff, but what else? I'm thinking about picking one out, but I don't want to be modded because people find the avatar objectionable.

Rule #6: Avatars & Signatures

This community’s emphasis is on constructive and authoritative contributions and collaboration. Avatars are welcomed, but should maintain a “safe for work” style, and may not exceed 100×100 pixels. Images are not allowed in signatures, and signatures should be devoid of any disparaging remarks toward other members.

I think as long as it's considered "safe for work", then it's probably OK. I would also say don't choose something obnoxious, like something that flashes a bunch, and if you choose to use an animated avatar, make sure it's not too big filesize-wise so it doesn't take a long time to download for people over slow connections.
