"Mystic" ...come again?
Just wondering if anyone knows about the origins of the term 'mystic' for Gohan's power up in the Buu saga; I've searched through the manga and the Japanese version of Budokai 2, but I've never actually found a name it (I'll have to check what the capsule is called in Budokai 2 next time I play it).
I get the vague feeling that someone must have tacked the name on at some stage and it stuck. Any ideas?

Great question. Probably be extremely difficult to track down who originated it. One thing to do would be to look through Curtis Hoffman's manga summaries to see if he used it, or not... that'd be one clue, and at least give a relative time-frame for when it began.Zackarotto wrote:I heard it online. So if that's the case, who made it? I guess we'll never know...

If I'm not mistaken, doesn't it come from the Japanese word Chou which translates into Mystic? I think its one of those things that Bandai came up with and it started to catch on, like Super Goku 4. I'm pretty sure I've seen it on their figure. Other than that, I have no idea. In Budokai 2 isnt it called "Old Kai power up", or something to that extent? I know for a fact they never use the term in the Dub.

Chou actually is equal to "super, ultra, mega, etc.", I believe. I could be wrong...
And if Bandai invented the name Super Goku 4/Super Saiya-jin Goku 4, why is it mentioned as "Suupaa Saiya-jin Gokuu Yon" in the anime itself?

Ummm... I haven't watched the vast majority of GT, but every time I hear Goku verbally name the stage, he flat-out calls it "Supaa Saiya-jin FOUR." Not "yon," or "shi" or anything.. the English "four."The S wrote:Chou actually is equal to "super, ultra, mega, etc.", I believe. I could be wrong...

Yeah.
As far as I know, the first time the stages are verbally given names with numbers is when Goku demonstrates them all in front of Majin Buu (which is when he also shows us SSJ3 for the first time).
"Supaa Saiya-jin"
"Supaa Saiya-jin tsuu"
"Supaa Saiya-jni tsree"
(feel free to correct my romanizations, Julian)
In the daizenshuu, they're always written out as "Supaa Saiya-jin (roman numeral)," as well.

Sounds like "yon" to me, especially when the announcer says it. Besides, if it was said as "Four" it would sound like "whore", which it doesn't.

They (being Goku, the announcer, Pan... everyone...) most definitely say directly out "Supaa Saiya-jin FOUR" in everything I've heard in the show, which is mostly Super 17 --> end.

You hit the nail on the head Zacko! Yep to them, English is really "foreign", therefore cool-sounding. Even though half the time the English they use doesn't make any sense. Think of it the same way as how we will use French terms to describe something, like "He has such a laissez-faire attitude". For a really fun example of badly used English in anime, check out the series Blue Seed. There is a character who is an exorcist named Sakura, who has lived in the U.S. for a few years and she peppers her speech with all kinds of English swear words, except that they're always completely grammatically off!
It's hilarious to listen to! Plus it's a good series anyway. ![Cool 8)](./images/smilies/icon_cool.gif)

Okay, so I'm wrong. But my point was proven: Bandai didn't invent the term, Toei did.

Heh heh, yeah. A friend of mine gave me a CD full of songs and crap from anime that we'd seen in our high school anime club... I play that song at least once a week
