Battle of Gods Soundtrack Opinions

Post by DragonBoxZTheMovies » Thu Jun 27, 2013 2:38 am

Outside of when the samples were released, I really don't recall hearing a lot on this. So, what do people think?

I managed to dig up my initial impressions of the soundtrack, and was hoping to read some of yours too.
DragonBoxZTheMovies wrote:So I just listened to the whole soundtrack, straight-through, for the first time recently. I must say, I was quite surprised at it; in neither a bad or good way. Some of the pieces struck me as very English dub-esque. I can't think of any examples off the top of my head, but I noticed a few pieces that resemble Shuki Levy and Bruce Faulconer in particular.

Anyway, of the 43 tracks, my favourites were:
- Track 3, Our Hero, Son Goku (~ “CHA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA” (Main Title))
- Track 6, Bulma’s Birthday Party
- Track 24, Vegeta Enraged- this one strikes me as kinda Yamamoto-ish. Sort of reminds me of Creature of Marvel for some reason.
- Track 30, One More Saiyan
- Track 31, Super Saiyan God is Born
- Track 38,The Eternal Universe (Budding Friendship)
- Track 40, The Eternal Universe (Parting)
- Track 42, CHA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA (A Peaceful Earth)
And of course, the two main songs of the feature: HERO: Song of Hope and CHA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA

Overall, I really enjoyed listening to the soundtrack. One or two pieces sound a little out of place but others were really cinematic and a joy to listen to. I can pretty much close my eyes and picture the scenes playing out in front of me- with the help of Kanzenshuu's brilliant summary of the film, of course. In fact, I may listen to the soundtrack again while reading along with the summary at the same time.

I like the soundtrack, but a lot of the tracks are so short (like almost cueing up a moment in the movie rather than being background scene music) that it's a little more difficult to properly enjoy them. After learning about the soundtracks to other Toei properties movies (One Piece and Precure) these short mini-songs seem to be the norm for them. Learning about the history behind some of the tracks (via a post from Julian in the BOG thread?) was really interesting.

My earlier thoughts:

Thank you so much!

EDIT: About halfway through; this soundtrack, it's so surreal; can something be nostalgic if you've never heard it before? o_O
I mean, it must be the instruments used or the pace of the music, but I get crazy 90's nostalgia-vibes (in a good way) from this and this is my first time hearing this soundtrack.

At sound track 22; dies.
On hiatus.

I honestly wasn't a fan. To me some of the best songs were just too short. As said above. Most of the music was build up rather than a BGM. THe songs that ere a BGM however I didn't like lol. Besides Vegeta Enraged. THat was badass. So I'll rate the OST soundtrack a 6/10. I rate Vegeta enraged 8/10

From the samples I've heard, it was certainly serviceable, but it's lacking in melody and bombast (two things I associate heavily with DragonBall music.)

I do look forward to hearing it used in the movie; perhaps my opinion will change.
Nothing matters (in a cosmic sense.) Have a good time.

Just finished a full listen of it. The early parts are way too Faulconer-esque for my liking. Electronic sounds and drone do my head in so I have to say, I really didn't like that but it evolves nicely into some fantastic strings and operatic choirs that sounds unbelievably good. I know nothing of the film and plan to keep it that way until it releases but from I've heard of this soundtrack it sounds like it's going to be an absolutely huge film with some pretty poignant moments if some of the softer piano melodies are anything to go by.

I haven't tried listening to the soundtrack on its own (except Hero ~Song of Hope, which is... okay), but I must say, both times I went to actually see the movie... I was not at all impressed by the soundtrack. It just sounded too, I dunno... 16-bit video-game-y? At no point did the music stand out to me in a good way, and there were at least a few instances where I was actually thinking "Man, this music is really bad..."
So yeah, not a fan of Battle of Gods's soundtrack.

I think it's pretty serviceable and obviously better than the Yamamoto score. I like some tracks' very dark atmosphere and how pieces for serious scenes sound very cinematic. The drawbacks are a lack of Asian feelings and the overdramatic-sounding Latin/German/Egyptian chant. It's not bad for the Buu arc which barely has Asian/kung-fu elements, but I can't imagine it really fitting the earlier parts of the series. Overall, Sumitomo is the best among the post-Kikuchi DB composers, but he still seems not to have completely understood something like Dragon-Ball-esqueness. I'm looking forward to his future DB-related works.

From what I've heard, the score to this film seems leaps and bounds beyond anything Kikuchi has produced.

Truth be told, most of the tracks are short, but I really enjoyed the orchestral and choir ones a freaking whole lot, the emotional ones are very nice too!. I was a little worried if sumitomo was to score the buu saga in kai. Now i'm not, His Asura Soundtrack was really good too, if he can strike something like that in Buu saga, i'll be happy.

I wonder why people say that many tracks are too short. Their lengths are about the same as those of most of Kikuch's pieces.

Maybe they are talking about the "filler" Material like the "FOOOSH" sound That is used, I think, on the King vegeta flashback and the Bingo Epic orchestra entrances.
