Akihito Tokunaga's Chance Of Returning To Dragon Ball

Post by PrinceVegetto » Sun Mar 16, 2014 1:48 pm

What's the chance of Akihito Tokunaga returning to Dragon Ball? Also, would you like him to be the music composer for the Buu Saga of DB Kai instead of Norihito Sumitomo?

What would he even have as a chance to return? Video games? I suppose that is possible, but there is already Hiroshi Takaki and apprently someone else, Kishi.

As well as those who composed the soundtrack of Battle of Z (Ryuji Nishida & Tomoya Sato) but maybe they've worked exclusively for the game and they're done now with the Dragon Ball franchise. Although I'd like for them to compose more and even go as far as making the music for Dragon Ball Kai: Majin Boo arc.

I would really like to see what Tokunaga would and could pull off nowadays for something Dragon Ball related. Absolutely adore his score for GT and I think it's a one of a kind work he crafted.

I'm not familiar with any of Tokunaga's music outside of GT, but I don't think he'd impress me if he returned to the franchise. While I enjoy a fair portion of his work, I always felt his action cues were a bit sub-par. I can listen to his softer and/or happier tracks all day, but not some much the other ones unfortunately. To me it sounds like his GT soundtrack is stuck in the 90's really. Of course, one could argue that Kikuchi's music sounds like it's stuck in the 70's/80's, however his unique sound has much more appeal to me. Plus I'd take Tokunaga over Menza's GT replacement soundtrack any day of the week.

If Tokunaga is still active and willing to work with the franchise again, he would really have to obtain a more modern twist to his action music (get some bass it their man) to impress me. Until then, I feel he was just a trend in the 90's.

He hasn't had a prolific career after GT, which is surprising given the quality of the job he turned in and the fact that he was so young at the time. When he was hired for GT he was a 25 year old novice - I imagine that both Toei when selecting him, and he himself, would have hoped he would have amounted to greater things in his career - so it's a shame all round that it hasn't worked out that way.

That said, the fact that he wasn't involved in the video games and Toei chose to overlook him for Kai (and subsequently Battle of Gods and Kai again) is rather telling in affirming that he was never really someone who was in their thoughts.

It's not totally impossible, though. Toei returned to Hironobu Kageyama for game themes plenty of times, after overlooking him for GT.
