"Don't let him get to you! True Saiyans speak the truth!"
Alright, so I did a little reasearch on Toei a bit and found out that Toei didn't want 4kids doing One Piece. Now, I remember a few people here saying that for DBZ, Toei didn't care about what other companies do to it, whether if it was replacing the score or changing a few names, but I wanna know if it's really true, cuz I think even if Toei push the "hardcore marketing" of Z along with Funimation, they had some little arguments about what Funi shouldn't have done back in the day.
Not that I care much of it, cuz I do like the replacement scores, especially the rock/nu metal replacements for the movies(mostly being movies 6,8,10, and the Future Trunks special).
So is it true that Toei didn't care about replacements?

Just out of curiosity, do you remember where (or from who) you heard that Toei didn't want 4Kids dubbing One Piece? 'Cause last I checked, it was the reverse...4Kids didn't want it, but got it as part of a package deal with other anime titles and sort of had to make the best of a show that they themselves knew from the start was not going to work with their typical localization practices.
As for not caring, well...I guess the proper follow-up question is to define what you mean by not caring. FUNimation certainly can't make any changes without Toei's permission, so while Toei might not necessarily be completely familiar with every single edit and change, they were aware in general that edits were happening and that the music was changed. They had to be, because FUNimation couldn't do that without their permission.
It varies from company to company how permissive they will allow a dubbing company to be. Some require a super-strict adaptation, others are very permissive and give the dubbing company a lot of liberties in the interest of making a show a hit in other countries. As an example of one extreme, when Gainax was pitching Neon Genesis Evangelion for an English dub, ADV ended up getting the dubbing and distribution rights, but they were not the highest bidder...Sony was, but they asked for A LOT of changes, and creator Hideaki Anno would have none of it. By contrast, for Pokemon, OLM and Nintendo gave 4Kids (and later, when they decided to save money by having the dub go non-union, the Pokemon Company International) a lot more liberties in the interest of getting the show out there and increasing the Pokemon merchandise sales.

A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

Yeah late reply, I know. But as for the information about that, I got it from Underbelly. Something's really fishy about that one.TheBlackPaladin wrote:Just out of curiosity, do you remember where (or from who) you heard that Toei didn't want 4Kids dubbing One Piece? I would hope they didn't since they had other things to worry about
