Gohan: Goku or Piccolo

Tossing the stereotypical "Piccolo's the better father" bit out. Who actually is better?

IMO, at this point in DBS, it's feels like Gohan has a much stronger relationship with Piccolo than his own father. The father-son bit was slowly losing after the Cell Games in his father's absence.

Gohan seems to hold a stable relationship with Piccolo, but for some reason with his father he seems weirdly awkward. Like when he asked to enter the tournament, he seemed pretty shy to tell Goku, signaling a not so close relationship.

Also, even though Goku sacrificed himself twice for Gohan (Raditz, Cell) in actuality it was for the whole world and not just Gohan (even though it spawned from Gohan's mistakes). But both Piccolo's sacrifices were strictly for Gohan, and that's what makes it feel more personal compared to Goku. Obviously, Gohan holds both in very high regard, respect and love.

But, now let's see what Piccolo and Goku think.

Piccolo holds Gohan in the highest regard considering he was his first friend he ever had. Constantly looks over him even in times of peace. Sacrificing himself twice for his old comrade. Proud in him no matter what he becomes. Gohan probably feels the same way.

Goku raised Gohan like any other father would before the arrival of Raditz. Spent three years training Gohan with Piccolo and exclusively trained Gohan for a year in RoSaT. Put all his faith in him in the battle with Cell. And when Gohan finally did it, Goku was really proud of him.

But, after that it was all downhill from there. Especially evident in the DBS, Goku has lost pride in his son and is disappointed in him, most evident in the DBS Manga (Yikes!). He didn't even consider him for the tournament, even though he was much stronger than Piccolo. In the end of Z, Goku gives up on Gohan (and Goten) and decides Uub to be more promising.

In short, Goku will always be Gohan's true and only father, but Piccolo will always have a special place in his heart.

Both Goku and Piccolo were pretty half assed in their treatment of Gohan. While Piccolo is certainly around Gohan more than Goku is, Goku training with Gohan was far more beneficial than all the years of training Gohan ever spent with Piccolo. But then again, neither Goku or Piccolo have a real grasp on the concept of family. I'm sure than both Goku and Piccolo would see Gohan as no more than a comrade. But that doesn't mean the both of them don't love or care for him greatly. Because they have show on several occasions they do.
