So when exactly did Goku and Vegeta turn SSJ2?

I'm on the Majin Buu saga and I'm sure Goku and Vegeta have gone SSJ2 but they've never mentioned it even when Gohan turned. Does it happen later? Does Vegeta turn SSJ2 at all? Please don't spoil more than necessary when answering this.

They both have the capacity for Super Saiyan 2 already, but they haven't revealed it yet. You're not too far from when it happens.

Neither of them could do it yet back when Gohan first transformed against Cell, of course, but they develop the ability later on. Goku and Vegeta aren't shown going SSj2 until further into the Buu saga, after all the Budokai-related stuff is done.

The capability of Goku and Vegeta turning SSj2 is only revealed later, after the Budoukai (a.k.a. world martial arts tournament). When they attained it, it's a whole other story but watch it first, then take your own conclusions.

"Super Saiyan 2" won't be coined until a little while after Goku and Vegeta use it. If you're watching with subtitles you'll see them call it some variation of "Super Saiyan that has surpassed the regular Super Saiyan".

As Tyro said, the numerical names for the forms don't come into play until after 3 shows up, but they have sparks when they first transform, and comment on each other having surpassed Super Saiyan/being stronger than Gohan at the Cell Games.

Or at least they do in the Japanese version. I can't remember how FUNimation's dub handles that scene.

They don't have an actual original transformation as Gohan did in the Cell Saga, it's all off screen training and you will see them use it soon.
