I just realize that Toei sucks in general when it comes to writing story arcs.., which is why most of the movies and GT sucked dragonballs from a writing standpoint, but writing character-driven stories actually brings out the best in them. Since Toei only have a general plotline to follow and fill in the blanks for canon episodes they suffer greatly from wacky power scaling, plot-hole galore, tension-destroying (unfunny) comedy skits, and butchered characterization.
But when they do those self-contained episodes... at leas the recent ones, my hopes skyrocket up. Sure they're not perfect but I really enjoy them... at least more than the canon stuff. Could it be that Toei works better with character-driven stories than plot-driven ones like Dragon Ball?
What do y'all think?
Dragon Ball Super should be a more episodic character-driven story like OG Sailor Moon

Haven't we already gotten these in GT? Goku dies, the DBs go away, and the Namekian DBs most likely won't be used again because of the Evil Dragons.

I always side eye the people who say "Now my kids/today's kids can experience what I did as a child!" Nigga, who gives a fuck about your childhood? You're an adult now and it was at least 15 years ago. Let the kids have their own experience instead of picking at a corpse.

Toei is fine when the write character driven stories in Super, but most of the writing comes from Toriyama, actually. It's just that they get most of the ideas from HIM, rather than their other series in general.

I would enjoy more episodic character-driven episodes. That's a big part of why I like Toei's 90's Sailor Moon so much. Dragon Ball has such a big cast! There's so much potential to mine from it.
While the upcoming tournament has potential for some fun gags, I'm mostly still dreading it as a Champa arc sequel.

If not super then I would love at least a spin off at some point featuring other characters. Possibly with a slightly different art style. Maybe closer to Toriyamas current art style. It would be interesting. There are more than enough characters sitting around to do it.
