Cartoon Network vs Local Networks (A question for people outside the USA)

Post by Cure Dragon 255 » Tue Apr 04, 2017 9:21 pm

Soooooooo... People outside the USA, what do you think about Cartoon Network? Do you like Cartoon Network? Or you prefer to watch on other local networks? I put aside the USA because of the whole Vortexx/Toonzai debacle, while other networks can air DB, DBZ, DB GT, AND SUPER as uncut as possible! What's your preference?

I loved Cartoon Network UK back in the late 90s and early 2000s. Before DBZ and the Toonami block came on I used to watch a lot of their original shows like Dexter's Lab, Johnny Bravo, Cow and Chicken etc. At the same time I would watch a lot of Fox Kids for stuff like Power Rangers, Digimon, Spiderman TAS, and Goosebumps. And I'd also watch Nickelodeon for Kenan and Kel, and Sky One for Pokemon.

Overall Cartoon Network UK had one of the best lineups, and obviously got even better when DBZ and later the Toonami block came along with Batman of the Future, Xmen Evoluton, and Samurai Jack. Eventually we got CNX which was a full time channel dedicated to anime and martial arts movies among other stuff. It was an awesome channel but unfortunately short lived. Then we got the actual Toonami UK channel for a couple of years before it went downhill and ditched all the best shows in favor of becoming a poor man's version of Nickelodeon.

These days CN UK isn't what it used to be, although I'll admit The Amazing World of Gumball seems like a show I'd have loved when I was a kid. It's a real shame they're not interested in airing Super.

Kix was a good channel for a while but now that's gone downhill too, no longer airing Kai.

Why was it called Batman of the Future instead of Batman Beyond?

"Batman of the Future" was one of the working titles that remained unchanged for particular regions. If I remember right, early previews of Batman Beyond used "Batman of the Future" & "Batman Tomorrow" but I couldn't tell you why the alternation wasn't universal (especially when "Batman Beyond" remains vocally cited in alternate regions).

Cartoon Network UK has become a shell of it's former self. I hate to sound nostalgic and all that crap, but back in the day, the line-up was stacked with good content. The PowerPuff Girls, Johnny Bravo, Courage The Cowardly Dog, Codename: Kids Next Door etc. I can't pin point exactly when the quality of programming started to decline, but some time around Teen Titans went off air in 2006, that there seemed to a shift in what kind of programming would get the green-lit on the network and what kind of programming would be short-lived or never see the light of day. The same thing happened to Nickelodeon after Avatar: The Last Airbender ended in 2008.

Boomerang has also changed for the worse, in my opinion. It' used to be a safe haven for the more classic cartoons like Danger Mouse, Snoopy, The Pink Panther, Garfield and the old-school Hannah and Barbara cartoons. But around 2003-2004, it started drifting away from it's original purpose and became more focused on current programming.

And Fox Kids. Ugh. The less said about how much that network gutted and fucked over the better.

I understand now. Still, I think Batman Beyond is a cooler title.

Hmm debatable on Boomerang, they still air Scooby Doo Where Are You, Classic Tom and Jerry, Classic Looney Tunes and Wackey Races, plus the shows Boomerang show are wholly better than the crap CN UK show, I don't even touch CN now except for We Bare Bears the only decent show they have, them airing the new JL show at 7 am on a Saturday was a f*cking joke. No wonder they aren't interested in Super, cuz we need lots of crap like Uncle Grandpa....

To be fair, I stopped watching Boomerang years ago, so I don't really know what the current mindset of programming is for that block.

Fair enough, outside MotD, Sky Sports etc I more or less just watch Boomerang most of the time, big kid still at heart and refuse to grow up! :P

Agreed. I think around 2008-2011, there was a real dark age of CN, where very little good stuff was on it. Over time, CN UK has got better, but it's never been quite as good as it was back in the early '00s. Same thing happened to Nickelodeon, actually(Although Nick was never all that consistent anyway; in the early '00s, they had Avatar, Spongebob, Fairly OddParents, and Danny Phantom, but very little else of any note).
As a side-note, Toonami was awesome. Dragon Ball, Z, GT, Teen Titans, Batman Beyond, Yu-Gi-Oh, Justice League, Chris Colorado, Pokémon, '90s Spider-Man (Which I still regularly revisit to this day), Clone Wars 2003... The list goes on. And for our airing of GT (And DB), we got the Blue Water dub. No "Step into the grand tour" nonsense, we got the original music! Plus the scripts were better, despite the voice acting not being great. And we got Westwood Z for the Trunks saga onwards, meaning we mostly heard the Ocean cast! :D
And yeah, Boomerang was always my favourite as a kid. I could tune into that channel, and get a constant stream of classic Looney Tunes, Tom And Jerry, Scooby Doo, Pink Panther, Garfield, Catch The Pigeon, Wacky Races, etc.
It was great.

I don't remember any particular local networks from that time, and I don't really watch a lot of actual network TV these days. I keep up with what shows are being broadcast, but I basically only ever watch them online, or sometimes recorded.

Anyway, Dragon Ball isn't currently airing in the UK. I E-Mail Cartoon Network every now and then asking whether it could conceivably be in the cards at some point, but they never respond. Seems pretty silly for them not to at least try; Ocean Kai is a thing, Super is generating buzz, Cartoon Network could probably get the rights to any of the Dragon Ball shows for pretty cheap, given the little interest UK TV networks seem to have in it at the moment. They could package it up with Samurai Jack, throw in something like Young Justice(Although perhaps not literally that, since Netflix are picking that up now), maybe an extra anime or two, and start a Toonami block.
The point of Dragon Ball is to enjoy it. Never lose sight of that.

To be fair, it doesn't seem very clear what you're trying to get out of this thread. To my understanding, a lot of countries didn't air Dragon Ball shows on Cartoon Network (Canada comes to mind as an English speaking example). The only place I can think of outside of the US that had Dragon Ball on CN/Toonami, as well as another channel, was Australia. But I could also be wrong about that since I've never lived there myself. Point is, many people either wouldn't be able to compare channels to CN, because it wasn't like that for them, or they never had Dragon Ball on CN to begin with (to which the whole DB/CN connection is irrelevant). The UK is one of the few places (to my knowledge) that had Dragon Ball on multiple channels, including CN/Turner owned ones.

Sure you're not getting some of those mixed up? '94 Spider-Man (along with Spider-Man Unlimited) was always a staple of Fox Kids/Jetix over here in the UK, at least, that's how I remember it. Aside from X-Men Evolution I don't recall any Marvel cartoons appearing on Toonami UK around that time. As for Yugioh, wasn't that originally on Nickelodeon before being picked up by Sky One? I don't seem to remember that ever being on Toonami but then again, I wasn't around during 2005 to 2006 so perhaps things did get swapped towards the end. The only major show I remember Toonami acquiring was the early seasons of Pokemon during 2004.

There's a LOT of countries that aired Dragon Ball on CN. A large amount of the Latin American countries did and I know Brazil did as well. It's not few at all.

You are correct, speaking as someone who was there when the show was popular. Starting in 2000, the Saban/Funimation dub of DBZ was being run on both Network Ten (a "free" channel like FOX or NBC) and subscription television / the localized version of Cartoon Network. This wasn't even the case in America since Cartoon Network didn't come into the equation until DBZ had left syndication. I'm not even sure how Ten would have gotten the rights to the series, since they had no connection to Time Warner, and got nearly all of their kids shows through Fox Kids (and later Fox Box / 4Kids TV).

Boomerang used to be awesome too back in the day. I remember watching lots of Christmas Specials and Halloween specials on both Boomerang and CN. These days they barely acknowledge Halloween at all, while they used to air the Halloween Tree every year without fail.

This thread was more intended for Brazil and Latin America, I didnt want to seem a jerk by explicitly saying so and barring the UK and other countries from discussion, especially since I already took out the USA from the equation.

I DO LOVE The discussion about the UK. I have a lot of interest in that area, because its such a wild card when it comes to anime.

I started watching Yu-Gi-Oh in 2001 on Sky One, it was shown on sunday mornings along with Pokémon and it was later picked up by Nickelodeon. It was definitely not on Toonami UK though.

But I agree with the rest in this thread, with the exception of a few shows it didn't air Cartoon Network UK was my childhood and I will always hold nostalgia for the 1993-2007 years. Dexter's Laboratory, Johnny Bravo, Cow & Chicken, Powerpuff Girls, Space Ghost Coast to Coast, Samurai Jack, Xiaolin Showdown, and Beyblade were some of my favourites alongside Dragon Ball.

Well, you probably don't hear from these Spanish speaking DB fans from Latin America because they don't speak English.

I don't know much about CN in Latin America. To be honest I didn't even know Cartoon Network existed in Latin America until recently. But I do know(I assume)that CN is a relatively new thing in Latin America. Probably from the mid 2000's onwards. Dragon Ball/Z/GT first aired in Mexico in the mid 90's/early 2000's in Mexico's Canal 5 which is a national channel for targeted for kids and teens. And I think it was the same for the rest of Latin America where DB/Z/GT aired on their national channels, like Mexico's Canal 5, before Cartoon Network was even a thing there.

It wasnt a new thing, it was already there back in the 90's. But they didnt air Dragon Ball, just some Hanna Barbera and Looney Tunes cartoons along with some originals.
