The real terror of Cell...his spots!

Post by Bejiita » Mon Sep 11, 2006 12:00 pm

Cell, one of the most fearsome villians to shock the Z warriors, he truly was a terror.

But it's not his power I am talking about, the terror which I am reffering to are his spots!

Yes, it appears Cell is very well drawn character, but how would he look without the spots on his body? To put it simply, quite plain, very plain.

For the people that didn't know, one of Toriyama's regrets were the spots on Cell's body, it was, apparently, a mistake he wishes he didn't make, it took the blood and sweat out of him to draw all those spots, and he wished he never drew them in the first place, he actually drew the whole Cell arc and then went back and drew the spots on after, and this must have been a painfully boring task.

I myself can't even be bothered to draw Cell anymore, basically because I can't be arsed to draw the spots in after, and that's only for one picture!

So what do you think? If Toriyama never did draw the spots on Cell's body, would it have looked better or worse to you? I am very happy he did do them because looking at this picture I just edited, (and that took long enough!) Cell doesn't really look as good and detailed as he does with the body spots. So we are quite lucky he did make this mistake, because if he didn't we would have a very plain looking Cell!

Cell's reign was a terror to the planet, but to Akira Toriyama the only terror was his spots.

Did Toriyama regret drawing the spots on his body because he didn't think they looked good afterwards, or just the sheer amount of work he had to do to get them all in before publishing? I for one like his character design the way it is, it really helps to set him apart.

The reason was because it was it was time consuming. I think he's happy with the outcome of course, it just must have took him hours on end just filling in the spots.

Some might not be too bothered about it, in the end of a day I'm saying we could have ended up with Cell with no spots, and it's wouldn't look that good.

I like it with the spots, (although it's cool seeing him without them for once.) However, he looks too Freeza-like without the spots, to me. Plus, the spots look good on him! He has a sort of camoflage look, which (I suppose) goes well with him being a sneeky character at first. :)

Spots = more unique.

For some reason Cell looks more Freeza-like without them.

I agree with the last two posters. He looks shockingly like Freeza, or a relative of him, without the spots.

Isn't it funny how something as minor as body spots make a character look unique? Without them it's just not Cell, just like a Cheetah without its spots could be taken for any wild cat.

It's good Toriyama added them because it's one of things where you can say 'well Cell could have have not had his spots' just like 'the series could have ended after the Freeza arc' and it actually could have happened if Toriyama changed his mind before actually drawing him in the Manga with spots, if he would have foreseen how long the Cell arc would have lasted I'm sure he would have changed his mind somewhere while in the design of Cell.

I feel sorry for Mr. Toriyama, but I feel even more sorry for Toei. Imagine how many spots they had to draw!

That's right... you think Toriyama-sensei had it bad; think of the poor animators!

No wonder the animation was sorta sub-par so much during the Cell Games...

You think that's scary? You should see some of Toriyama's other Cell designs. XD If I still remembered the urls for them here on the site, or the thread they were previously posted in, I'd link them.

I've always liked that concept design of Cell with hair, he should've gone with that for Cell's "Super Perfect" transformation. The main villians of DBZ are almost always bald, or balding.

He looks very plain, in fact he looks very boring, like a character that gets killed off quite fast. You know, like Dabra (maybe known as Dabura for some or all of you).
Keep the spots on!

Hahah, yeap I remember those Cell character designs, honestly I like a couple of them. The one with hair is just one big no-no though. Hell, they could all be Cell's minions if Toriyama wanted them to be XD

Really Toriyama drew as much or maybe more than Toei, because he done them single handidly, but there was more than 1 animator, around 6 or 7 who did the episodes as a team, so really Toriyama did (by himself) what was split between 7 groups of people.

He may have had some help from his assistant, I read he would draw the action lines for Toriyama on panels, I don't remember him reading he helped hm on Cell's spots though, maybe they were a bit too advanced for him.

It never occured to me that he had individually drawn every single spot. I can't even fathom how aggravated the animators of the show must have become.

Well I'm glad Akira Toriyama stuck with it, and now let us all thank and applaud Mr. Toriyama, and the animators at Toei for the awesome villain that is, Cell. *cheers claps woot.
