FUNimation streaming all the Dragon Boxes now

Post by eledoremassis02 » Fri Feb 11, 2022 8:21 pm

Looks like they've uploaded the Dragon Box for the Japanese version (sans NEP) for Z. Before they were the orange bricks, minus the later seasons.
Image

Season 9 is the best and worst as its the Dragon Box footage with a max of 432p and stretched widescreen

not all the movies are available but they japanese ones have the Japanese titlecards wich I greatly missed (and stream 1080!)
GT is their regular source sans the DNRing
Image

GT caps at 423p whereas Z caps at 5

At the very least, a pretty good way of watching the Dragon Boxes (later seasons are under a paywall) if you dont have them

And there are ways around the paywall.

I'm wondering why they didn't include NEP for the earlier seasons. Last I checked the Boo saga seasons had them.

So what exactly is the difference between GT on Funi and GT on Hulu? Because previously Funi had one version with soft coded subs that looked better than the one on Hulu with hard subs. Is it the lack of DNR?

Also, is the first DB series sourced from the DBoxes as well?

Dragon Ball is the same thats on HULU (blue bricks with Japanese title cards for Japanese ver.) GT's subs are hardcoded it appears (or atleast it wont let me take them off).

Season 9 does have NEP (I didnt check all the seaons for those but seeason 2 doesnt have them)

when you click an episode it defults to English (wich is the 16x9 blurays). You have to change the language at the bottom on the controls pannel

Kinda strange that they'd have awhole ass seperate video feed but I guess they figure if a DB fan is streaming in Japanese, they're a purist :P

I’m honestly surprised they’re doing this. I figured they would avoid using Dragon Box footage to encourage purists to buy their 30th anniversary masters to settle for a 4:3 release. I guess the steel books are out of print and the Wal-Mart 3 in 1 sets are its final hurrah?

Wow! That's pretty nice. Not perfect, but better than pretty much any other outcome I'd imagine.

Well i'll be, this is certainly an interesting and amazing development. At least there's now another way to watch the series (albeit sub only) in 4:3 if you don't physically own the Dragon Boxes themselves. It does have the caveat of not including the dub with the footage, but those who aren't strictly dub only viewers have a better video experience if they are subscribed to this service.
DB collection related goals as of now:

1.) Find decent priced copy of Dragon Box Z Vol. 4 (Done)

2.) Collect rest of manga

3.) Get rest of Daizenshuu (2-7)

Did a comparison between the FUNI and Japan Dbox and the stream.

This is the DNR'd version. The "regular source sans the DNRing" would look identical to the Dragon Boxes, since Funi's source for GT was the Dragon Box transfer, but without Toei's very light DNR, and without some of the cleanup; tape mark removal, etc.

Nice to see there's finally a good version of DBZ for people to watch, though. The Dragon Boxes haven't been a realistic option since they went out of print (and even before that, they were grossly overpriced), and the DVD singles are too awkward to collect, are also expensive, and aren't complete. I just wonder whether this was a Toei mandate rather than a Funi decision.

This is just on FuniNow at the moment? Hopefully it proliferates across to other platforms, and eventually applies to DB and GT as well.
The point of Dragon Ball is to enjoy it. Never lose sight of that.

Does Funimation even have the Dragon Box masters for Dragon Ball? I assumed they never received them

Seconded, and even if the footage isn't synced to the dub version (Don't get why they're using the OB video for that, it's inconsistent with the other) at least sub watchers have the better viewing experience.

There does appear to be grain in the Japanese version (along with japanese titlecards :D) It's hard to tell tho, as the resolution isnt the best

How odd. Surely Funimation still considers their new 1080p 4:3 masters to be the superior source? Maybe this was a happy mistake. Either way, having the aspect ratio tied to the audio language is silly and unintuitive. Their player has a toggle for uncut/simulcast, so surely they could implement an AR switch that way?

This makes me really happy. If anything happens to my DBox DVD's it's nice to have an alternative.

No, it clearly isn't. Funis GT season set masters had that weird plastic look to them and that's not evident at all in the screencap.
