The heavily edited airings of Dragon Ball Z on TV3

We've had threads in the past about the rare Dale Kelly eyecatches seen nowhere else, but here's something else interesting I've recently learned about New Zealand.

For those unaware when Dragon Ball Z aired on TV3 during the early 2000s there was additional censorship, even on top of the heavily edited Saban episodes. This has been confirmed by at least three fans here.

Apparently TV3 said they aired the episodes as-is without doing their own cuts, which begs the question who could have edited them. Supposedly TV3 needed to get a G-rating though.

Examples of such cuts exclusive to TV3 based on the above were:
  • During scenes where there's a punch to the face there is a cut from one character being about to punch to the other character flying backwards (noted by gohan2k)
  • Goku punching Nappa in the stomach is cut entirely (noted by BluezaBladeNZ)
  • Goku reacts in shock when Vegeta is about to headbutt him, making it look like he was freaking out over being intimidated instead of being hit (noted by Captain-Sora)
  • Guldo's death is completely cut and you only see him being shot, tree spear missing and then after a "next dimension" line you see smoke clearing from the attack (noted by Gonstead)
  • Shot of beam hitting Dende is cut, as is shot of Dende dead but we still see Krillin/Kuririn mourn his death (noted by gohan2k)
  • Cut from Goku's array of kicks against Freeza to falling back. Freeza's tail smack isn't shown (thanks to iKaos for finding this recording)
  • Cell charging at Goku cuts to Cell flying backwards towards cliff with mouth bleeding (noted by gohan2k)
  • In the 25th Tenkaichi Budokai during the flashback to Goku vs Jackie Chun the shot of both characters being kicked in the face is cut (credit again goes to iKaos for providing the clip for this)
This is not like YTV as the music placement and dialogue is the same as the Toonami US airings, the only difference is the additional cuts to the already edited footage.

It's not known whether GT was as heavily edited, but if there was additional cuts from the Saiyan arc all the way up to Boo it seems reasonable to expect it would have continued.

As gohan2k says in these posts it just goes to show you can butcher the hell out of Dragon Ball but it can still be a smash hit with viewers.

Did anyone catch these airings? What edits do you remember?
