Dragon Ball GT back on Hulu USA

Post by MasenkoHA » Thu Nov 27, 2025 2:00 pm

Unfortunately it’s the English dub with the Mark Menza score. But for English dub fans every single Dragon Ball series is basically now available (with Kai in place of Z)

Strange, wasn't Z exclusively available with the dub and Kikuchi score when it was on Hulu?

Yes. Every time the Z dub has been available for streaming (Hulu, FunimationNow, and Crunchyroll) it’s been the Kikuchi score. I think the Microsoft Store is the first time the dub with the USA score was digitally available

I’m guessing the whole Faulconer lawsuit is the only reason the Z dub with Kikuchi is Funimation’s go to for streaming Z

Both the dub and its score make GT a far worse experience than it actually is, so I honestly can't recommend anyone watch it this way.

Ditto, I've trashed it in the past but honestly if anyone likes it more power to them. That said GT for me is easily Funimation's worst Dragon Ball dub, especially with the Menza score as it makes the whole show overtly dull and dreary, and the Tokunaga score clashes too much with how dark and edgy they tried to make GT be.

For English viewing the Blue Water dub is the better option, sad that it is only available through.... other means. It feels more like a Saturday morning cartoon, which is still closer to the nostalgic, sentimental vibe TOEI were going for with GT.

Yeah, I don’t know if I would recommend GT in any language but the Funimation dub with the Menza score is definitely the worst of that. It is annoying that Daima is the only series available in both Japanese and English. I don’t know if Hulu just doesn’t want to pay extra or if Crunchyroll just wants to hold off the Japanese audio to incentivize fans into subscribing to their streaming services.

There’s also something painfully ironic I can now watch original Dragon Ball with the proper OP and EDs and Japanese credits…in English. But if I want to legally want to watch the show in Japanese my choices are the DVDs with only the first OP and second ED and the English episode titles and the English cast and crew getting sole credit or Crunchyroll with uh same scenario but at least the episode titles are in Japanese and the opening and ending animations are just textless

The Blue Water dub is the only English dub of GT that is good. The script is more faithful and the voice acting is better.

I couldn't tell whether GT had the same upscale treatment as the original DB had been given. But, it looks about like the Green Brick DVDs, especially since it has that god-awful metallic logo at the opening.

Yeah I’m also guessing it’s just the green bricks.

Dragon Ball: Dragon Box(?) upscale

Kai: Mixture of the DVDs and Nicktoon broadcast masters

GT: Green Bricks

Super: Blu-rays. I think?

Aren't all the US releases of GT just based on the Dragon Box? I believe the Green Boxes had light DNR, but from the screenshots I've seen shared here the season sets and singles look near identical.

Sure. But as the Green Bricks do have the light DNR and stupidly remove the NEP (which seems even dumber since Kai and Super include theirs) and that’s what’s on Hulu it’s just easier to point out it’s the Green Bricks.

Microsoft has discontinued the Movies and TV service on July 18 this year, which makes Fandango at Home (formerly Vudu) currently the only way to watch the FUNimation in-house dub of DBZ with its two replacement music scores on digital and streaming. However, some episodes, particularly some later episodes of the Majin Boo arc, have the original Japanese BGM instead of the replacement BGM.

Also, Disney announced in August that the original USA-exclusive Hulu streaming service will be discontinued and merged into Disney+ (along with Hulu's entire catalog). It'll still be a separate subscription, but its catalog will be accessible in a new unified platform to be released next year.

You are right, GT music in American version is very strange, I find it very hard to get used to it, however I consider GT being in Hulu overall good news.

I have noticed that since DB GT is shorter than DB or DBZ, more people are willing to watch it. And by that I mean younger generations. You know how hard it is to get Gen Z and younger to comit to anything... in the end, being a short series has been an advantage for DBGT. Hopefully it will do well in views.

Dragon Ball GT is currently the second most trending search on Disney+
