Correct spelling of the Saiyan in Red’s (DB Legends) real name - research question

Post by LoganForkHands73 » Thu Apr 30, 2026 9:53 am

I’m working on a little project, not gonna divulge the details here, and I was curious about the correct spelling of the Saiyan in Red’s real name. All sources spell it as Giblet, which appears to be a meat-based pun at first glance, but the true origin is ‘ciboulette’, which maintains the vegetable/produce theme naming of all other Saiyans.

It bugs me, but I was surprised that the few times he’s mentioned even here on Kanzenshuu a.k.a. Preserve the Damn Pun Central, he’s referred to as Giblet. Would a name derived from Ciboulette be acceptable?

We talked about this recently as we fleshed out video game character names on the wiki. The long and short of it is:

(1) Things get really wonky when you start going back and forth between FRENCH specifically with Japanese and then to "English" (see also: "demi-glace" with "Demigra" and ドミグラ)

(2) As part of that, pronunciation guides with the letters used start getting really wonky as well, and while "Giboulette" wouldn't be "wrong" it also doesn't necessarily/quickly give a pronunciation guide back to the Japanese verbalization as much as you'd want, as simply as you'd hope.

It ends up being a "path of least resistance" kind of thing. Sometimes you gotta make compromises.

That’s helpful Mike, thanks so much
