Re: Dragon Ball Super: Beerus - Episode 4 - Official Discussion Thread
I criticized many users here last week for not liking episode 3; you were right and I was wrong, and for that I apologize to all of you. Toei doesn't know what the F it's doing here. We rushed through the entire party and all the character moments with everyone, only to give Oolong of all characters SEVEN minutes of screen time this week, or NINE if you count the couple he got last week ? seriously ? Not only did they drop the ball hard with this episode, they retroactively made last week's episode even worse. The first frame of this episode should've been Oolong losing the game, with the half way point ending with Goku reaching SsjG. To make things even worse, Oolong got NEW ANIMATION ? seriously ? this is what you're spending you limited budget on ? I loved the first two episodes, and I may very well love the last two, but you can't screw up so hard in the middle of the story and expect things to come together; things just don't work that way. I have been the biggest defender of this arc here, but even I have to jump ship (speaking of, did we really need that scene of Pilaf here ?) and say just go watch the movie instead.
Re: Dragon Ball Super: Beerus - Episode 4 - Official Discussion Thread
-We can't have Chef Vegeta, but we can have Oolong's entire multi-round rock-paper-scissors vs Beerus? Certainly a choice.
+/-No music at all for Goku's arrival is also a choice. He lands gracefully this time instead, which, shrug.
+Chichi going to bat for Vegeta after Piccolo finds the idea of him qualifying suspect.
+/-Chichi proves episode 2 of the unedited DBS happened, via flashbacks.
-They skipped Goku teasing Vegeta about him being why it didn't work the first time and Goku telling Vegeta during the sequence that what they're doing to him is starting to make his body hurt a bit.
This edit continues to have a strange pace.

Re: Dragon Ball Super: Beerus - Episode 4 - Official Discussion Thread
Very nice episode, all improved.
Yes, Oolong can be kept because he is a comedy-based character, so of course the comedy scene they keep to show Beerus' more laid back side (yet still dangerous) is the one that doesn't humiliate a character that doesn't have "gets humiliated for comedy purposes" in his usual assets. Why are people acting so surprised? OF COURSE you keep that sequence that has a purpose to it (showing Beerus' levity and hesitation to destroy Earth that lasts in the future, although he WILL ultimately do it despite giving extra chances), and OF COURSE you want the God transformation to end the episode and not be a middle-of-episode event.
The added shot showing it is like a full-blown physical battle for them was well-thought.
Goku not having music when he arrives almost gave me chills, there is sort of a visual confrontation between him and Beerus as Beerus ponders if he should restrain from firing the ball at the sight of him. Goku giving Beerus the unphased look in silence is how he quietly convinces an offensive lion to hold back for a bit, at least enough time to see what he wants.
The ritual is - expectedly - more epic than in any other version: it doesn't outstay its welcome with over-the-top weather-changing stuff, and it doesn't feel like a very local, almost non-event like in the movie. You have here the most impressive way Super Saiyan God gets to appear, ever. That includes the first shot we see of him: outstaying its welcome with an uninteresting presentation in the original anime and being rushed with a quick close-up that's cut short too early in the movie.
Shenron respects Beerus but is not pissing his pants, you gotta respect the dragon for simply redirecting his attention to the god of destruction, with his tone being enough to convey the fact that he's trying to keep his composure but keeping his straight face. His appearance was beautifully done.
Overall, no real negative point to this episode, it's all good this time! (thank God we don't have the super-desaturated look from half of last week's episode!!)

Re: Dragon Ball Super: Beerus - Episode 4 - Official Discussion Thread
Okay, so they decided to cut Vegeta's dancing/cooking scene but keep Oolong and Beerus's rock-paper-scissors match? And on top of that, they created new scenes just for that.
The only positive thing I can say about this episode is the improvement in the visuals and the fact that they included flashbacks from Episode 2 from Super 2015, but other than that, it's still a disaster.

Re: Dragon Ball Super: Beerus - Episode 4 - Official Discussion Thread
This episode was better than the previous one, with no weird cuts or editing choices.
- They didn't fixed Bulma's mom's eyes being open.
- Valuable minutes were wasted on the rock-paper-scissors scene, but I get that it was probably there to make sure the episode ended with the SSJ God reveal.
- Not much really related to this episode, but I always find it funny how villains are capable of destroying an entire planet with a tiny energy blast, yet, for the sake of drama and storytelling, they prefer to put on a show with some gigantic energy ball that looks like a supernova.
- I would've found it hilarious if they had kept "Omen of Victory" playing when Goku showed up, but the lack of music, combined with the way Goku steps onto the ship, was a considerable improvement.
- They made Shenron feel less goofy and just genuinely respectful towards Beerus. I liked that.
- The ritual scene was improved as well, even down to the way Videl shows up and reveals that she's pregnant.
- Looking forward to Beerus' reaction in the next episode when he finds out that his long-awaited opponent, the Super Saiyan God, requires him to use 70% of 1% of his maximum power LOL

Do you keep nine minutes of it though ? the original scene in the movie was roughly 90 second long, and it achieved the exact same goal. In fact, it was even funnier in the movie because it wasn't so dragged out like it was here. Also, if you are going to include new animation for non-fighting / non-serious scenes, why not allocate those resources to reanimating Vegeta's dance scene instead ? That was a core moment in Toriyama's script; this was just a quick gag.Cold Skin wrote: Sun Nov 01, 2026 3:06 pmYes, Oolong can be kept because he is a comedy-based character, so of course the comedy scene they keep to show Beerus' more laid back side. ... And no Tarble mention, as one could expect. Unfortunate. Movie 14 is still the best and correct way to experience this story, no matter how many times they feel like retelling it, for whatever reason.
Hopefully they put some effort into the Super Shenlong scene, it was my first profile picture here, so maybe I'll be using it again from this version. Looking forward to that particular moment. But this is it for me. And for those who'll stay, enjoy!

It amazes me that despite over a decade of hindsight on their side, they still managed to get it wrong. It makes me wonder just how bad Daima (or the original BOG movie) could've been had they followed through without Toriyama's involvement, as these people clearly can't tie their shoes without him holding their hands.Grimlock wrote: Sun Nov 01, 2026 3:17 pm ... It's very weird, I'm having a hard time understanding where Toei's priorities lie with this remaster, no Vegeta cooking scene, but Oolong gets new animation, ok Toei...

The cooking scene was too cringe for my liking, but they could've easily reanimated his dance scene from the movie. I was alright with both being cut as a result of believing that new animation was reserved exclusively for the action and transformations, but it clearly isn't, so what gives ?PhantomSaiyan wrote: Sun Nov 01, 2026 3:23 pmIt's very weird, I'm having a hard time understanding where Toei's priorities lie with this remaster, no Vegeta cooking scene, but Oolong gets new animation, ok Toei...
Re: Dragon Ball Super: Beerus - Episode 4 - Official Discussion Thread
Still not a fan of this whole Videl SSJ thing. They never bring it up again nor does it affect Pan in any way. It's clearly a thing Toriyama didn't come up with and is only there for shock value and theorizing which led to nothing as not even what-if games can give Pan a Super Saiyan form.
Re: Dragon Ball Super: Beerus - Episode 4 - Official Discussion Thread
And yet, it was decided that keeping Vegeta's scene would hurt (and rightfully so when you look at all the "they finally respected Vegeta" reactions online) while this scene with Oolong and Beerus does bring something (which is probably the levity some complained was missing AND aspects of Beerus' personality with him taking his sweet time with this game, which feels like a genuine physical battle for him - and we understand that clearly for the first time with this new shot -, and aligns with his hesitancy to destroy the Earth for good without wanting to admit it.The Dark Knight wrote: Sun Nov 01, 2026 3:15 pmDo you keep nine minutes of it though ? the original scene in the movie was roughly 90 second long, and it achieved the exact same goal. Also, as someone pointed already, they surely want to end the episode with Super Saiyan God appearing, which alone justifies extending things because you need to hit a specific story mark at specifically the last 10 seconds. There are thoughts and reasons behind every choice, and people checking over and over again that it is as intended.
And Toriyama script or not, when it's deemed as not being the best thing to do, it's out.
Perhaps Toriyama says "Goku transforms immediately to his new transformation" against Freeza for example, and yet they'll say "nope, it's better if he turns God first while transforming into his Blue form because it establish things that are needed, so no-no for Toriyama's instructions." And that's fine.

They didn't bother to fix the revelation of Videl's pregnancy, just like in Super 2015, it still comes out of nowhere, and everyone's reactions to it are flat.
The movie handles that plot point much better.

Re: Dragon Ball Super: Beerus - Episode 4 - Official Discussion Thread
Now that this is two episodes away from being over, I can say that the movie still remains the best way to consume the arc. At this point I’m just hoping the new cuts for the fight are big enough to give SSG Goku some new attacks for the games.
I’m a lot more worried about RoF though. Its problems go way beyond bad art direction. It needs an actual, from-scratch remake. Piccolo dies for no good reason, Yamcha’s not there but Jaco and Roshi are, Vegeta gets punked by Frieza and Goku has to come in and kill him, it’s a mess.

This is the exact thing I was saying last week, but the problem is that you can take things so far that it is no longer Toriyama's Dragon Ball, which is what we've been seeing here in this remaster. The one thing the Battle of Gods movie and Daima have over everything else in this revival is Toriyama's personal and unique touch; this remake of BOG pretty much removed all his fingerprints from the story.Cold Skin wrote: Sun Nov 01, 2026 3:33 pmAnd Toriyama script or not, when it's deemed as not being the best thing to do, it's out.

And that's why they cut that scene from the movie but decided to keep the bingo scene from Toriyama's script.
Honestly, I'm surprised at how some people dismissed the complaints about the removal of the Vegeta dance/kitchen scene to defend the Oonlong vs. Beerus fight (which they even made longer than the original).

Oolong wasted our time, and I thought the ritual took a little too long. Overall I thought there was some unnecessary padding for what was supposed to be the "padding-less" version
They also removed my favorite scene of Shenron loosing his cool when he's told Beerus was present.

"They're removing the filler!"
Don't know about y'all, but this episode sure felt like filler to me.
I mean yeah, all of this was in the original movie, but still... A TV show is not a movie.
Almost nothing happened. And the things that did happen felt extremely soulless and forced to pad the episode out.
We really did not need half an episode of Oolong shenanigans.
Videl rushing in to save them and reveal her pregnancy should've been given a lot more weight, instead it felt like just another thing that just so happened to spare them from Beerus' wrath and get the dumb drawn-out ritual over with after yet another fakeout.
What a trainwreck.

I guess Bird Studio being demolished is symbolic with what's going on with Dragon Ball, as they are basically Toei-fying Dragon Ball by removing everything Toriyama brought to the table.SHINOBI-03 wrote: Sun Nov 01, 2026 3:46 pmThey also removed my favorite scene of Shenron loosing his cool when he's told Beerus was present.
