The Steel Box Arrives- Trunks/Bardock DVDs Remastered

Post by MarcFBR » Wed Feb 06, 2008 1:43 pm

Got this because I grabbed a stack of Funimation things yesterday (One Pieceeeeeeeeeeeeeeee) and with comments from others that Funimation has a new encoder I wanted to see if there was any improvement on the DBZ front.

I only flipped thru the Trunks/Bardock DVDs because well...One Piece.

But there does appear to be less blurring then in previous ZOMG REMASTERED sets.

Although I did get a nice laugh out of the Trunks/Bardock trailer on another new disk that mentions nothing about widescreen, and the trailer is fullscreen.

Oh, also, wait till you see the trailer for the rerelease of the Dragonball movie 3pack as thinpaks (has this been on any disks that are actually out yet, because it is fucking hilarious).

But a quick summary, video still is meh, but appears slightly better.

also, strangest insert Funimation has EVER done for DBZ

Then I'll just list all the positive/negative things I've heard about this release:
+ Better encoding than before.
+ The eyecatchers have been re-inserted. (According to Chris Beveridge on AoD)
+ The video doesn't pause for a second right before the end credits. (Never heard anyone confirm this, but it's logical to assume that this is the case.)

- Cropping. The end credits look particularily awful.
- I can only assume that they still suffer from a slight loss of detail and/or washed out colors like the other sets.

I just wanted to get that out here. I won't be getting this set, being that I already have the full screen-releases, but these sets seem like a decent alternative for those who don't want to import the R4-releases.

And what is that extremely strange insert you mentioned?

Do you think that when you have watched them fully, you could do an in depth review one them please!
I finally bought a gamecube. To bad they don't make any games for it now.

Well....

the front of the insert is Shenron and a dragonball with text that declares

DRAGONBALL Z
THE MOVIES

Which makes you think it is some fancy movie guide.
and then you open it up and get.....

pictures of the original american DVD covers with text underneath telling you the original DVD release date.

The Trunks one even has the DVD logo and the old Funimation 'Includes 2 VERSIONS!!!!' text on it, while the Bardock one is a (mostly) clean version of the cover.

Okay. That IS pretty stupid. Especially seeing how those movies aren't even available anymore, and are all being replaced with the "remastered" ones.

I'm more amused with the trailer for the Dragonball movie 3 pack, where they 'suggest' the 3 movies are a trilogy and the 'beginning' of db/dbz.

I've got about twenty screencaps from the original 4:3 DVD of the Bardock special already uploaded. I'll post links if you would be kind enough to take a few from the remastered DVD's.

Timecodes are on the screencaps themselves. Apologies to everyone for stretching the page. :|

As is well known by Mike, Julian, and others, I feel it is finally time I can reveal how I get all these DVDs and information I pass along early to everyone.

.....I'm Batman.

also, I'll try and take some of those caps later.

Seriously, how'd you get these? And when you mentioned One Piece do you mean you got your hands on the Alabasta movie? How??

Wow, another thread to bitch about how FUNI fucked up the transfer.

Seriously people, if you dont like the product dont freaking support it. The only reason FUNI keeps on releasing these is because they're selling.

I bought the first "brick" and thought it was horrible, havent bought one since .

Okay, so there was a "pros and cons" list as well as the mentioning that the original release isn't even available anymore, but you're the first one to do any real bitching in this thread.

Freedom of speech or get the fuck out.

Dude I realize that, but everytime the remastered sets are brought up, Mike locks the thread because people fight over the transfer. It might start civilized but it usually ends in disaster.

Yes, and if no one STARTS the real bitching, it wouldn't escalate to that, and you were the one who started it wukong.

A think a friendly reminder would've done a little better than "[sarcasam]. [bitch bitch moan redundancy]."

I get your point, and I'll take it to heart. Just remember that when you don't wanna see people get hostile, don't be an asshole toward them.

Anywho, I'm waiting for those shots.
