Flake is a fictional character in the Dragon Ball franchise, a male Cerelian killed by the Saiyan Leek during the invasion of Planet Cereal. Flake appears in flashback material in the Dragon Ball Super manga-original "Granolla the Survivor arc" in chapter 77.

While not explicitly called out as such in the story content, in an August 2022 video Q&A with Victory Uchida and Toyotarō on the Dragon Ball Official Site, Toyotarō noted that he drew Flake as if he were Granolla's father, with the caveat that this was not information from Akira Toriyama and that Toriyama may have later thoughts or clarifications as to who Granolla's father might be.[1]

Biography

Forty years prior to the events of the "Granolla the Survivor arc", the native Cerelians and a group of Namekians live on Planet Cereal peacefully together. A group from Freeza's army — including a batch of Saiyans — arrive and begin attacking everyone in sight. With Planet Cereal currently experiencing a full moon, the Saiyans transform into their Great Ape forms. The Cerelians and Namekians are systematically scouted, retrieved, grouped, and murdered. Hanging from a building continuing to scout, one Saiyan peeks through a building to see a woman Cerelian and her young child hiding in terror. From a distance, an older Cerelian shouts for another one — Flake — to fire. The Saiyan rushes in to stop the Cerelian, but takes a double-fingered ki blast point-blank to the face, giving him a scar that runs up his forehead; the ki blast continues up to destroy the moon, reducing the Saiyans to their normal forms. The Saiyans are still more than enough to handle the Cerelians; a different, mustached Saiyan delivers the final blow to Flake, knocking his now-dead body down from his perch high above.[2]

Name

Flake's name spelling of フレイク (fureiku) adjusts the middle elongated syllable in フレーク (furēku) from "corn flakes"[1] and instead adapts this into its own two separate syllables with レイ (rei).

Viz's English translation of the Dragon Ball Super manga does not reflect this spelling change in the base word, and renders the name as "Flake" directly.

Production

Flake appears in the "Granolla the Survivor arc" of the Dragon Ball Super manga, a story arc initially outlined by Akira Toriyama and produced as a manga by Toyotarō.

Notable Appearances

Thus far, Flake appears exclusively in the Dragon Ball Super manga.
