Summary

Forty years ago...
Monaito and his fellow Namekians are harvesting vegetables on Planet Cereal. The Cerealians drop by to trade water for vegetables. On the night of the full moon, suddenly the planet is attacked by Saiyans who transform into Great Apes, along with other warriors from Freeza's army. The Namekians and Cerealians are few in number and defenseless against the invaders. Before the eldest Namekian dies, he passes on the Dragon Balls to Monaito and suggests he hide to protect them. Meanwhile, a young Granolla runs from the battle. As soon as he reaches his mother, a Great Ape finds them.

On the battlefield, a Cerealian named Flake takes aim, clipping Leek's head as he destroys the moon. The Saiyans lose their Great Ape transformations, giving the Cerealians hope, but Taro informs them that even without the transformation, Saiyans are still up to the task. They take care of the remaining Cerealians in the area. Taro suggests they finish the job and get off the planet, then asks Leek if his head will be okay.

Meanwhile, Bardock is left facing Granolla and his mother. She fires at him, damaging his armor and scratching his arm, but Bardock is consumed by his own memories. His wife Gine chides him for missing the birth of his son, asking him if he realizes how many months he has been gone. He guesses that this is why her tummy is flat again, and she complains that men are emotionally stunted. As Raditz plays outside with other Saiyan children, Gine tells Bardock that the new one is in the incubator, and asks him to help her choose a name. Bardock decides to name him Kakarrot, which Gine thinks is a fine name. She hugs his tank and tells him to grow up to be big and strong.

Back in the present (40 years ago) on Planet Cereal, Bardock hesitates over his task. Leek finds him and informs him that the mission is done and they have orders to retreat. Bardock tells him to go on without him; he is going to stay to check for survivors. Leek tells him to hurry; Freeza will coming soon. Bardock checks his scouter and realizes that Granolla and his mother are the last two survivors. Then he notices a weak signature in the mountains with a battle power of 5. He wonders if it is just an animal, but decides its movements are too deliberate to be anything other than intelligent life. Carrying Granolla, he goes to check it out.

As Bardock enters the Namekian house, Monaito attacks him with his staff, but he easily blocks it, noting that Monaito's battle power jumped to 213 when he attacked. He realizes that Monaito can control his battle power, which explains how he was able to hide. Monaito notices the child, and then Granolla's mother enters and takes him from Bardock. Monaito is pleased to see that there are Cerealian survivors. Granolla's mother introduces herself as Muesli and asks if they can take shelter there. Monaito happily agrees, introducing himself to her. Bardock warns them that Freeza will be coming soon, and advises them to keep hidden. Monaito asks him what he is playing at, and Bardock tells him that he just felt like helping them. He takes his leave, and asks them to keep surviving. Monaito asks for his name, so he gives it.

Back in the present...
Granolla cannot believe he is only alive because a Saiyan took mercy on him. Monaito apologizes for keeping this a secret all this time. What's more, he says, Goku is the spitting image of that Bardock guy. He asks Goku if any of his relations go by the name Bardock, and Goku explains that he was raised by his Grandpa Gohan on Earth, so he does not know any of his Saiyan kin. Then Vegeta informs him that Bardock was his father. Goku is shocked, as are Monaito and Granolla. Goku tells them he wishes he knew anything about his father, but he does not. Vegeta observes that his soft nature must run in the family.

Suddenly agitated, Granolla demands to know why his mother did not survive. Monaito continues his story...

As Bardock leaves, Monaito asks him to wait; he can heal his injured arm. Bardock says he did not know Namekians could heal, so Monaito explains that the most gifted healers could even restore his energy, but Bardock's minor injury is all he can manage.

Bardock's scouter beeps, and he realizes someone is nearby. He creeps through the trees to see who it is, and finds the Heatas. Monaito asks who they are, and Bardock explains that they are planet brokers for the planets conquered by Freeza, and they have apparently set their sights on this one. Monaito is angry that their home is being sold like property.

As the Saiyans depart the planet, Elec tells Oil to get word to the Sugarians and negotiate a price. Maki wants to know if they are going to fleece them, and Elec assures her that once they clean it up a bit, the planet will sell for at least a hundred billion poles. Oil asks what cut Freeza should get, and Elec tells him a tenth. Maki is excited about the easy money; after all, Freeza's people are just in this because of their thirst for carnage; they have no real idea what a planet is worth. Hearing this, Bardock is angry, but Elec goes on: as long as Freeza doesn't figure them out, they will make out well. Maki cautions him that Freeza is smarter than his goons, and his battle power is off the charts. They have to be careful. Gas insists that one day they will be superior to Freeza's army, and Elec agrees.

Muesli comes out of the house and asks what is going on. Monaito warns her to be quiet.

Elec says that they will not overpower Freeza with might, but with their wits, wealth, and intel, their day will eventually come. Maki says that they can save up a good fortune until that day, and Elec agrees. They are not destined to serve Freeza forever. Bardock realizes they are plotting to betray Freeza, but just then, Granolla wakes up and starts calling for his mother. He yells as he recognizes Bardock as a Saiyan, and the Heatas finally notice. Monaito quickly uses his powers to put Granolla to sleep, and assures Muesli that he is fine, but it is too late. Bardock curses the child, and then realizes the Heatas have noticed them. He tells Monaito to give him his robe, quickly.

The Heatas approach and see a robed Saiyan taking aim at the stragglers. Elec asks Bardock who he is, and Bardock tells him that he was just about to take care of these survivors. Elec realizes he is one of Freeza's men, and tells him to get on with it. He hesitates, and Elec asks him if he is having second thoughts. Bardock tells him that the Namekian just used a strange power, and he thinks it might be worth checking out before he kills him. Elec takes out a gun and shoots Muesli through the heart. Monaito calls out to her, and Elec tells Bardock to kill the kid and take the Namekian.

Bardock tries to conceal his anger, but Gas notices his building power. Suddenly he turns around and fires on them, but Gas manages to throw up a barrier quickly. In the meantime, Bardock escapes with the others. Elec wonders what is going on with them, and Oil suggests they might have been eavesdropping. Elec realizes this could get them in trouble.

In their hiding spot, Monaito apologizes; his power is not enough to save Muesli. Bardock wonders what has gotten into him. Monaito does not know, but he wants to know what Bardock will do next. Bardock tells him that the Heatas are surely going to look for them.

Elec decides that the eavesdroppers must die. Gas promises that he will kill all three, so Elec tells him to get it done. In the meantime, they will prepare to meet with Freeza. He tells Gas to make sure this is dealt with before Freeza arrives, and Gas says that it will be, and takes off.

Back in the present...
On the Heatas' spaceship, Gas remembers that day forty years ago. Elec realizes that Gas wants revenge, and Gas says that he will not suffer such indignity again. He has gotten stronger. Elec agrees, but looking at their Dragon Ball, he says that it does not hurt to have insurance. Just one more! Maki tells the pilot to step on it so they can get the second Dragon Ball.
