Earth is a fictional celestial body that appeared in Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball manga series, which is loosely based on the actual Planet Earth in reality. The planet is one of the main settings in the series and is the home to Son Goku and friends.

General Overview

OG73-I details Earth as being "Planet-877 Green-4032", the third planet from its star in the outskirts of the North Galaxy.^[1]

Earth is a life-sustaining planet, featuring a diverse terrain of land and watery oceans, where multiple lifeforms coexist. The landforms are different from the Earth in reality, consisting of a single large continent, two smaller isolated continents, and various small islands. The Moon is Earth's only natural orbiting satellite. It is located in the North Galaxy of the living world and is referred to by Beerus' attendant, Whis, as "Planet-877 Green-4032"^[2]^[3] in the Seventh Universe^[3]; this same descriptor is provided by OG73-I in the Dragon Ball Super manga series.^[1]

Intellectual inhabitants of Earth speak the official language of the universe, allowing them to communicate with beings from other planets and races. However, some races on Earth still maintain their own unique languages.^[4] The most common written language on Earth is English, making it the official written language, but many districts still utilize their own characters or alphabets.^[5]

Government

The Earth is comprised of 43 districts, which are all governed under a single unified government system. These 43 districts elected to form the "Earth Nation", a federation with each having an equal relationship, in order to counter invasions from alien worlds or the "Demon Realm". The "Earth Nation" federation is overseen by the Earth's King, who resides in King Castle and holds full authority over the districts. Whether the national king is chosen through elections or simply by heredity is unknown, but Bulma notes^[6] that the national king of 100 years ago became king through the power of the Dragon Balls.^[7]

While the "Earth Nation" can be considered a monarchy, where the king holds special privileges and authority, his policies are generally democratic and each district's administration is left to self-government. However, the larger cities within the "Earth Nation" hold a large sway in policy making, leading to a large discrepancy in economic status between the urban and rural areas across the Earth.^[7] The worldwide currency on Earth is the "Zenny"^[5], which is said to be equivalent to the Japanese Yen (¥).^[8]

The "Earth Nation" is protected by the "Royal Defense Army" (王立防衛軍; ōritsu bōei-gun), while the law in individual districts is enforced by local police. However, in most rural areas the police presence is very limited and unreliable, so crime is rampant.^[5]

Society

On Earth, where multiple ethnicities and multiple races coexist, there are remarkable differences in industry and culture by region. In large cities, urban development is achieved through industry and advanced technology. Conversely, rural areas are based around a hardworking farm life of field cultivation, livestock, and dairy farming. The two maintain a balanced coexistence though, due to the necessity of a constant and plentiful food supply.

Earth's culture has achieved a high level of technological power, in large part due to the "Capsule Revolution", which was the cause for an explosive advancement in technology across the planet. The "Hoi-Poi Capsule" was invented by the Capsule Corporation's company president, Dr. Brief, which allows users to store any object in a small capsules that can fit in the palm of your hand. This technology drastically advanced portability and mobility, allowing people to easily relocate and lead more luxurious lives.

Human intelligence has also been fostered, leading to advancements in the practical use of anti-gravity engines and genetic engineering. However, while people now lead more luxurious lives, the bloating of the defense industry is an increasing issue. With the mass transportation of weapons via Hoi-Poi Capsules, and the development of artificial humans for fighting through genetic manipulation, criminals like the Red Ribbon Army that abuse these technologies are becoming more common.

While the technological industry has made rapid advancements, supernatural items, magic, and witchcraft are still used by a few.

Inhabitants

An explanation of the location's inhabitants.

Regions

The Earth is divided up into four cardinal areas (North, South, East, and West)^[9], but a more general grid system has also been established^[10] to easily identify specific locations.

Area A-1: North West

A desolate and inhospitable northernmost region. Its rugged land and scattered trees defend against human encroachment.

Yunzabit Highlands (ユンザビット高地): This is the spot where God's spaceship made an emergency landing long ago. It is located on the northernmost island. Due to its geography and climate, it is a land unsuitable for plants or animals.

Yahhoi (ヤッホイ): A land visited by Goku when he set out to train after resurrecting Upa's father with the Dragon Balls. Goku swam from here to Papaya Island, where the Tenka'ichi Budōkai grounds are located.

Cell's Arrival Point (セルの到着地点): The point where the time machine Cell rode in from the future arrived. For a northern land, trees grow comparatively thick here. Having received a message from Bulma about a vehicle similar to Trunks' time machine, Trunks and the others headed here. They then discovered Cell's time machine. From here, Cell heads for Ginger Town and other heavily populated areas.

Boo's House (ブウのおうち): After killing Babidi, Boo built this house to rest in when he grew tired of playing around by destroying cities. He destroyed a town, turned its inhabitants to clay, then used them as material for the house. He organized it into three rooms: a dining room, a bathroom, and a bedroom. The second story with large windows is the bedroom.

Area A-2: North Central

Located in the center of the world, this is a special region where the city with the King's Palace is located. The wide-open land has invited numerous decisive battles.

Goku and Vegeta's Battleground (悟空とベジータの戦闘地点): The location where Goku and Vegeta were transported to by Babidi's magic. Here the two's showdown ended up reviving Majin Buu.

Arrival Point of Goku's Spaceship (悟空の宇宙船到着地点): The point where Goku's spaceship landed after returning from Planet Yardrat. It is located north of where Freeza's spaceship touched down.

Cell Games' Grounds (セルゲーム会場): This is the place where Cell, having reached his perfect form, constructed the Cell Games' tournament grounds. It is where Cell was annihilated.

Freeza's Arrival Point (フリーザ到着地点): The point where Freeza, revived as a cyborg, and his father King Cold's spaceship arrived.

Ginger Town (ジンジャータウン): This is the first town that Cell attacked after arriving from the future. Cell then attacked the neighboring towns and powered up.

Central City (中の都): The biggest city in the world, which the King lives in. It was dominated by Demon King Piccolo, who had gotten his youth restored by the Dragon Balls. Furthermore, its television station was raided by Cell.

Area A-3: North Central

A far northern territory whose land continues on covered in snow and bitterly cold wind. The mountains rise straight up and conifer trees grow thick.

Doctor Gero's Laboratory (ドクター・ゲロの研究所): The secret laboratory that Doctor Gero fled to from the southern islands. It is built within a cave in a deep canyon. There is a basement in this laboratory, which houses a gigantic computer and the capsule that contains Cell.

Battleground With No. 17 and No. 18(17号18号との戦闘地点): This is the roadway where the recently activated Artificial Humans first fought Goku's allies. Easily defeating Vegeta and the others, the Artificial Humans head south on this road in search of Goku.

North City (北の都): The largest city in the northern territory. Tenshinhan and Kuririn passed over it through the sky on their way to Doctor Gero's secret laboratory.

Town Where No. 18 Stole Clothes(18号が服を奪った町): A city that the Artificial Humans visited to find replacements for their tattered clothes after their battle with Goku's allies. It is a small town covered in snow and conifer trees. After this, the Artificial Humans headed south again on their way to Goku's house.

Site Where Piccolo and Raditz Meet (ピッコロ・ラディッツ接触地点): A place that Raditz discovered with his scouter after arriving on Earth. He came mistaking the highly powerful Piccolo for Goku. After meeting Piccolo, he picked up the battle potential of Goku (who was visiting Kame House) on his scouter. Raditz flew off to Kame House.

Area A-4: North East

A region positioned on the north-eastern part of the continent. The northern portion is an extremely cold land wrapped in thick snow. In the southern portion a grasslands area spreads out.

Jingle Village (ジングル村): The place where Goku's plane made an emergency landing when he was searching for the Dragon Balls. It is a small village hidden in the snow. Because it is located in a cold northern country, all of the houses are equipped with fireplaces.

Muscle Tower (マッスルタワー): A tower occupied by soldiers, led by General White, of the Red Ribbon Army. It was built with many mazes, hidden areas, and other such traps. The inside of the tower is divided into six floors, with each floor presenting a person whose rank matches their location in the tower. This is where Goku met Artificial Human No. 8, who was created by Doctor Gero.

Raditz's Arrival Point (ラディッツ到着地点): The location where Goku's older brother Raditz landed. An abundant grazing land stretches forth, where ostrich-like animals graze. This is also the spot where Raditz was defeated, after he kidnapped Gohan and confined him within his spaceship.

Silver Platoon's Temporary Camp (シルバー小隊仮設キャンプ): This is the temporary camp where Goku first encountered the Red Ribbon Army, after having gone out in search of the Four-Star Ball. It is a quiet place surrounded by small mountains and groves of trees.

East City (東の都): The biggest city in the east. It was also the location where Vegeta and Nappa's spaceships landed. The city was wiped out by Nappa's shockwave. Afterward, the two of them head toward Gohan's training grounds with Piccolo.

Area B-1: Central West

A warm region, beginning with Karin Tower, that is surrounded by abundant greenery. It is the region closest to God's Temple.

Karin Holy Land (聖地カリン): A land surrounded by abundant trees. It is where the tower of the cat sage Karin lives is located, and is therefore revered as a holy land. This tower also serves as a gateway to God's Temple, and only those who are approved by Karin can meet God. At the base of the tower live the father and son, Bora and Upa, who protect this sacred holy land.

Battleground with Boo (ブウとの戦闘地点): The site of Gotenks' battle with Majin Boo after coming out of the Room of Spirit and Time. Behind it you can see Karin Tower. This area was turned into scorched earth by their battle.

Town Where Tao Pai-pai Stole Clothes (桃白白が服を奪った町): A town that Tao Pai-pai visited in order to repair his clothes, which had become tattered during his battle with Goku. It is about halfway between Karin Tower and Red Ribbon Army Headquarters. After getting his clothes repaired, Tao Pai-pai flew to the Karin Holy Land once again and battled Goku.

Red Ribbon Army Headquarters (RR軍本部): The main stronghold of the Red Ribbon Army, surrounded by forest and mountains. It is centered around the tower where Commander Red's control room is located, with guard towers and soldiers' lodging houses arranged around it.

Giran's Village (ギランの村): The village where Giran, who fought Goku in the 21st Tenka'ichi Budōkai, lives. Tambourine visited here to defeat Giran, having been ordered by Demon King Piccolo to exterminate all martial artists.

Area B-2: Center

A western land that contains various topographies, from vast marshlands to a megalopolis that mastered the cutting edge of science and technology.

Parsley City (パセリシティ): A town that the Artificial Humans destroy in the world of the future. It is also the city where Trunks destroyed the Artificial Humans, after having returned to the future from training in the present.

West City (西の都): A large city located in the west. Bulma's home, the Capsule Corporation, is located here. It is the most technologically and scientifically advanced city in the world, and data on all of its citizens is managed in a computer database. For example, if a policeman enters a citizen's name into the small computer he carries, their address and a picture of their face will pop up. After capturing Muscle Tower, Goku came to West City from Jingle Village in order to have Bulma fix his Dragon Radar. Later on, Goku received medical treatment at a hospital in West City after being gravely injured in his battle with Vegeta.

Duel Site With Vegeta (ベジータとの決闘地点): This is the location where Goku, having defeated Nappa, came to settle things with Vegeta. It is a vast land made up of rock formations, and bears no signs of human habitation. From this battle, Goku went to the hospital in West City, while Vegeta returned to a planet governed by Freeza.

Gohan's Training Grounds (悟飯の修行場): After learning of the pending arrival of more Saiyans during the moment of Raditz's death, Piccolo brought Gohan to these training grounds in order to raise him into a warrior. This was also where Gohan and the others battled the Saibaiman and Nappa. The environment is very similar to that of Planet Namek, except dinosaurs and other similar creatures live here.

Area B-3: Center

An area where rocks and gigantic mushrooms stand side by side. Troubling the residents are the various rogues who have settled down in this region.

Site of the Turtle Hermit and Demon King Piccolo's Battle (亀仙人とピッコロ大魔王の戦闘地点): This is where the Turtle Hermit lured Demon King Piccolo in order to seal him away, using the Dragon Balls as bait. After narrowly escaping from the master's Mafūba, Demon King Piccolo called forth Shenlong and regained his youth. Afterward, in order to make the world his, he went to invade the royal capital, Central City.

Castle Pilaf (ピラフ城): The castle where Pilaf and his gang lived, scheming to take over the world. The foundation level is installed with mazes, traps, and an aircraft hanger. In the castle's upper level is a control room and bedrooms, and on the floor right below that is a game room. The glass-ceiling room where Goku and the others were imprisoned is located right by the game room. This confinement room is fortified with iron walls, but it was destroyed by Goku when he became an Ōzaru, and the castle was smashed to smithereens.

Yamcha's Hideout (ヤムチャの隠れ家): Yamcha's secret hideout, which is hollowed out into a rocky mountain. Yamcha and Pu'er use it as their bachelor pad, and it's relatively tidy.

Rabbit Gang's Town (ウサギ団の町): A village ruled by the Rabbit Gang. There are gas stations and capsule stores, making it a fairly big town for this area. Goku and the others stop here on their way from Mt. Frypan to the next Dragon Ball, located at Castle Pilaf.

Area B-4: Central East

An unforgettably important region for telling the story of Dragon Ball. It was from here that the magnificent story of Dragon Ball began.

Satan City (サタンシティ): The town where Satan lived after defeating Cell and becoming the savior of the world. Orange Star High School, which Gohan and Videl attend, is located here.

Son Gohan's House (孫悟飯の家): The house that young Goku lived in with his adoptive parent Son Gohan. Near this house Goku met Bulma and set out on a journey to the west.

Oolong's Village (ウーロンの村): The first village that Goku visited on his trip searching for the Dragon Balls with Bulma. The two met Oolong here.

Son Goku's House (孫悟空の家): Goku and Chi-Chi's house. After Gohan became a high school student, he taught Videl and Goten Bukūjutsu in the hills out back.

Pirates' Cave (海賊の洞窟): A cave visited by Goku and the others in order to find a Dragon Ball. Long ago it was used by pirates. Because of this, a pirate robot guards the place, and treasure is hidden here.

Area C-1: South West

A pointed tip extending south-west from the central continent. It has numerous mountains and a dry climate, and here and there are scattered large deserts.

Hiding Place of Babidi's Spaceships (バビディの宇宙船の隠し場所): In order to revive Majin Boo, the most evil mage in the universe Bobbidi used this place as his stronghold. Boo's ball was placed inside the spaceship, which was hidden underground, and therefore escaped Kaiōshin and Kibito's discovery. Goku and the others discover this place by following Yamu from the Tenka'ichi Budōkai grounds.

Namu's Village (ナムの村): A small community surrounded by mountains. The citizens live self-sufficiently, but afflicted with undernourished soil and scarce rain, it is difficult for them to grow enough food for a single year.

Uranai Baba's Palace (占いババの宮殿): A place visited by Goku in order to divine the location of the One-Star Ball. What stands out about it is the arena located around its center. Inside the building furthest from shore is an arena called "The Devil's Toilet", which is used for extremely strong people. There they have a hole filled with a poisonous bog, and one must fight on the tongues of demon statues.

Duel Site With Pilaf (ピラフとの決闘地点): An open field crossed by a long straight road, this area is located in a savannah dotted with low rocks. After learning Pilaf's location from Uranai Baba, Goku confronts him here to get the One-Star Ball.

Area C-2: South Central

A continent that floats in the south seas. In its northern portion the land looks relatively rugged, but its southern portion is blessed with a gentle climate.

Town Where Goku Bought Clothes (悟空が服を買った町): On the way to Uranai Baba's palace from Kame House, Goku stopped here to get some new clothes made for him. It has a Wild West-style culture.

South City (南の都): The southernmost situated of the large cities. In the course of the story, this city only appears in a line of dialogue.

Battleground with No. 19 (19号との戦闘地点): Because fighting on the island where No. 19 and No. 20 appeared would have led to enormous causalities, the battleground was moved to this uninhabited place. Here Goku fell to a contagious disease, and Vegeta defeated No. 19.

Island Where No. 19 and No. 20 Appeared (19号20号の現れた島): An economically-blessed island that is located close to South City. On the island's northern side is an enormous mountain, and the city spreads out from the island's center to the south. There are not only resort guests, but also a considerable amount of permanent residents. The Artificial Humans appeared hear suddenly and went about massacring the population. As a result, the island was almost completely wiped out.

Site of the Encounter with Yajirobe (ヤジロベーとの遭遇地点): The place where Goku was knocked down to in the middle of pursuing Tambourine from the Tenka'ichi Budōkai grounds. Goku went and ate Yajirobe's fish, but this began a long fellowship between them. A fairly unique, geographically isolated region made severe by its prairies and rain forests. The interior of the forest is dotted with sporadic wide-open spaces, but because daily life here is inconvenient not too many people live here.

Area C-3: South Islands

Islands located in the southernmost tip of the central continent and the south seas. A warm region of the southern hemisphere; half of this territory is covered in sea.

Mount Frypan (フライパン山): A mountain where the Ox Demon King's castle is built, it is entirely covered in flames. Nowadays it is called Mt. Frypan, but it used to be called "The Mountain of Refreshing Scenery" and was a peaceful mountain to spend time on. However, one day a fire spirit fell from the sky and it became a mountain that burned with flames. Because of this, the temperature of its surroundings was raised and the climate itself changed. When this was happening, the Ox Demon King and his daughter Chi-Chi were out on a picnic and therefore escaped. Goku and co. came here from Oolong's village.

Papaya Island (パパイヤ島): The island on which the martial arts temple that houses the Tenka'ichi Budōkai is located. The town is built facing the coast, making it very suitable for sight-seeing. The climate is warm and humid, with many palm trees and other southern plants growing.

Island Where Cell Reached His Perfect Form (セルが完全体になった島): An island where Cell pursued No. 18 to after absorbing No. 17. Though Trunks and co. came to prevent Cell from achieving his perfect form, he caught them off guard and absorbed No. 18.

Area C-4: South East Islands

An archipelago region composed of various large and small islands. A paradise where much nature survives, untouched by human hands.

Kame House (カメハウス): The house where the Turtle Hermit lives with his pal Umigame. It is built on a small southern island. When Goku trained under the hermit, Kuririn and Lunch both also began living here. However, after the 23rd Tenka'ichi Budōkai Lunch went out on a trip in pursuit of Tenshinhan. After the battle with Cell, No. 18, who married Kuririn, and their daughter Marron came to live here as well. It is Goku's second home.

Blue Company's Temporary Camp (ブルー中隊仮設キャンプ): The temporary camp of the Red Ribbon Army's General Blue. At this base, he advances in his Dragon Ball-finding expedition.

Islands Where Piccolo Fought No. 17 (17号と闘った島): This is the place where Piccolo lured the Artificial Humans when they visited Kame House in order to confirm Goku's whereabouts. It is one of the uninhabited islands around Kame House, and at first Piccolo and No. 17 fought here. Perceiving their battle, Cell came in order to achieve his perfect form. No. 17 was then absorbed on this island, and Cell changed into his second form.

Training Island (修行の島): The Turtle Hermit moved his house to this island in order to train Goku and Kuririn. It is in a fairly big island class in comparison to the surrounding islands.

Penguin Village (ペンギン村): This is Penguin Village, well-known from Dr. Slump. Senbei Norimaki, Arale, and the rest live here. Goku visited here pursuing General Blue, who had stolen the Dragon Ball Goku had found in the pirate's cave. A stereotypical hick town, it is located on a comfortable warm island locked in eternal summer.

Anime Original Locations

The following locations are original to Toei Animation's animated adaptation based on Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball manga series.

Basil Town (バジリタウン): A town attacked by Imperfect Cell as he gathered energy to take on the Artificial Humans. It is likely located in region B-2, south of Nicky Town. Cell nearly defeated Kuririn there, prior to the arrival of Piccolo and Tenshinhan.

Bridge Town: A town attacked by the Artificial Humans in Age 783 of Trunks's timeline. Trunks fought the androids here and lost, convincing him to go back in the time machine and find Son Goku.

Mount Kanae (カナエ山): A volcano from which Colonel Yellow's men try to retrieve the Four-Star Dragon Ball, before it is spewed towards Upa and Bora. It is located three kilometers east of Karin Tower.

Nicky Town (ニッキータウン): A town attacked by Imperfect Cell as he gathered energy to take on the Artificial Humans. It is likely located in region A-2 or B-2, near West City and 50 km down the highway from Ginger Town.

Pepper Town (ペッパータウン): A town attacked by the Artificial Humans in Age 780 of Trunks's timeline.
