Beerus is a fictional character in the Japanese animated television series Dragon Ball Super and its companion manga series written by Toyotarō. Beerus makes his debut in Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, which premiered on on 30 March 2013 in Japan, as the God of Destruction of Universe 7.
Biography
Beerus is a cat-like being of unknown origin who has lived for hundreds of millions of years.[2] He currently serves as the God of Destruction of Universe 7 and is attended by an Angel named Whis who serves as his guide. Beerus's twin brother Champa holds the same position in Universe 6 and is attended by Whis's sister Vados.[3][4] Beerus is life-bound to Shin, the Kaiōshin of Universe 7. If one dies, so does the other.[5]
In the time when the Elder Kaiōshin served as Kaiōshin of Universe Seven, fifteen generations of Kaiōshin previous, Beerus visited the Kaiōshin Realm for their millennial coordination meeting. They quarreled over a trivial matter and Beerus sealed the Elder Kaiōshin inside the Z Sword.[6][7] In a similarly ancient time, Beerus remembers visiting Earth. He told Whis that the dinosaurs had been rude to him, so he wiped them out.[7][8][9]
Many years later, Beerus visited North Kaiō's Planet, which was about one-hundred times larger than it is today. Accounts differ, but Beerus lost either a game of hide-and-seek[8] or a car-racing video game.[10] In either case, he became angry and destroyed Kaiō's planet, forcing Kaiō to rebuild his world from a fragment of the rubble.
Beerus slept for thirty-nine years before the events of Dragon Ball Super. Some time before he slept, he traveled to Planet Vegeta and was feasted by King Vegeta, with young Vegeta watching from a short distance as Beerus humiliated his father.[8] Beerus was angry because he had ordered King Vegeta to find him the most comfortable pillow in the universe, but the king kept the best pillow for himself, giving Beerus the second-best.[11] Beerus held a grudge against King Vegeta, and he asked Freeza to destroy Planet Vegeta and the Saiyans on his behalf while he slept.[7][8][9][12] Around this time, the Oracle Fish told Beerus that he would meet his arch-rival, a person called Super Saiyan God,[7] on a certain day. Beerus therefore arranged to wake up on that day, cutting short his normal sleep cycle. While he slept, he dreamed about the Super Saiyan God.[8][13]
Name

Beerus's name was originally adapted from the Japanese transliteration of the German pronunciation of Virus (ビールス/Biirusu). In the original script for Battle of Gods, Yūsuke Watanabe had imagined Beerus as the God of Destruction responsible for infecting the Saiyans with evil.[14][15] When Akira Toriyama revised the script, he thought that the pun was on the German word Bier (also ビールス), so he named Beerus's attendant Whis after "whiskey".[16] This accident served to establish the theme of Gods of Destruction and Angels being named after alcoholic beverages.[17]
The Japanese Battle of Gods program guide uses the romanization "Beers",[18] which is the spelling used by FUNimation's translator Steve Simmons in their subtitles, but the FUNimation dub spelling, "Beerus", serves to capture both the intended Watanabe pun and the accidental Toriyama pun, whether or not that was their intention.
Q: Did you pick the romanization Beerus, or was that the work of Steve Simmons? Just curious.
A: There were many discussions. I fought for Beerus because it sounds like the Japanese and classier than Beers—also searchable.

- ↑ In Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, Beerus does not say outright that he ordered Freeza to destroy Planet Vegeta, but he does imply that he expected Freeza to do it on his behalf while he slept, noting that the Saiyans were "nothing but trouble", especially King Vegeta. In Dragon Ball Super Episode 3, these details are consistent, and it was explicitly stated to be an order. In Dragon Ball Super Chapter 2, the order is explicit, but Beerus's grievances against the Saiyans are not enumerated. In Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F', Whis reminds Beerus that he "approved" Freeza's actions or intentions.
- ↑ The Oracle Fish is forced, upon threat of reduced rations, to remember the name "Super Saiyan God" in Dragon Ball Super Episode 3. In Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, Beerus tells Oracle Fish that it had predicted an arch-rival would appear in thirty-nine years. At first, Oracle Fish did not remember this, but after some prompting, it affirmed what Beerus remembered. In Dragon Ball Super Chapter 2, Oracle Fish merely confirms the contents of Beerus's dream, saying "You're right about the Super Saiyan God!" Nothing is said about a prophecy having been given before Beerus slept.
