Piccolo is a fictional character in the Dragon Ball manga series by Akira Toriyama. Piccolo makes his debut in chapter 161, published in the 1988 #11 issue of Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump.

Biography

23rd Tenka'ichi Budōkai arc

This Piccolo is simultaneously the offspring of the Demon King Piccolo, as well as his reincarnation.[5] After hatching from an egg, he grows into his full height within three years and enters the 23rd Tenka'ichi Budōkai intending to avenge his former self's death at the hands of Son Goku.[6][7] So as not to reveal his identity, he competes under the alias Ma Junior.[8] Another contestant who is hiding his identity is the God of Earth, Piccolo's benevolent other half. They face off in the semi-finals, and although God fails to defeat Piccolo,[9] Goku succeeds in the final match.[10] The latter then prevents God from finishing Piccolo off, not only because killing him would also kill God, but also because Goku enjoys having a challenging opponent around.[11]

Saiyan arc

Five years later, Raditz arrives from space and reveals that both he and Goku are Saiyans, powerful alien warriors who conquer planets and then sell them to new inhabitants. He says they will conquer the Earth as well, and wants Goku to help him with that. When Goku refuses, Raditz kidnaps his four-year-old son, Son Gohan.[12] Piccolo does not like how Raditz stands in the way of his own conquest of the world, and joins forces with Goku to try and take him down.[13] Goku ends up sacrificing his life to accomplish this, letting Piccolo's newly developed Makankōsappō technique drill a hole through both him and Raditz. Before he dies, Raditz hears from Piccolo that Goku will be brought back to life by the wish-granting Dragon Balls. Raditz transmits this information to his two Saiyan comrades out in space, who head off to Earth hoping to wish themselves immortal.[14]

Faced with the imminent arrival of two even more powerful Saiyans, Piccolo takes Gohan — who showed tremendous hidden power against Raditz — out into the wilderness to toughen him up.[15] Roughly a year later, the Saiyans Vegeta and Nappa land on Earth. When they see Piccolo, they note that he is a Namekian and theorize that there must be Dragon Balls on Planet Namek as well.[16][17] Joined by several comrades, Piccolo and Gohan face off against the Saiyans but suffer heavy losses, as the resurrected Goku cannot make it to the battlefield in time. Piccolo himself ends up taking a blast for Gohan, who he has grown unexpectedly attached to during their training, and dies. This causes God to die too, and renders the Dragon Balls he created defunct.[18] Goku, Gohan and others manage to fight off the Saiyans, while Piccolo and the other fallen warriors travel the Serpent Road to Kaiō's Planet.[19]

Namek / Freeza arc

In order to revive the Saiyans' victims, Gohan and others travel to Planet Namek to seek an alternative set of Dragon Balls. They are met with heavy resistance, though, as not only Vegeta is also seeking the Namekian Dragon Balls, but so is the ruthless intergalactic warlord Freeza.[20] Eventually, Gohan and friends manage to use the Dragon Balls to revive Piccolo and transport him to Planet Namek.[21] Piccolo finds a wounded Namekian called Nail and merges with him.[22] The newly powered-up Piccolo puts up a good fight against Freeza, until the latter transforms into a more powerful form.[23] Piccolo distracts Freeza while Goku prepares a Genki-Dama,[24] but even that is not enough to finish him off. Freeza fires a beam through Piccolo's chest[a] and he falls unconscious.[26]

By the time he wakes up, he is back on Earth. Freeza damaged Planet Namek to the point of collapse, so a wish was made upon the Dragon Balls to evacuate everyone from Namek to Earth. Only Goku remains on Namek to fight Freeza, and Piccolo thinks he is doomed, but Gohan reveals that his father transformed into a Super Saiyan.[27] Planet Namek explodes and both Goku and Freeza are thought to be dead,[28] but when Gohan and the others attempt to revive Goku with the Dragon Balls, the dragon says he is still alive and will return to Earth in his own time.[29]

Garlic Jr. arc

In an anime-exclusive story arc, Garlic Jr. escapes from the Dead Zone due to the Planet Makyō approaching Earth and increasing his power.[30] He seals God and his assistant Mister Popo into little flasks and pours the Aqua Mist down from God's Temple onto the world below. This turns almost everyone on Earth into members of the Demon Clan,[31] although Gohan and a few others manage to avoid this fate. Piccolo pretends to get infected so that he can get close to Garlic Jr. and snatch the flasks containing God and Mister Popo from him.[32] They are freed and manage to pour the Super God Water onto the Earth to return everyone to normal. Infuriated that his plans are getting foiled, Garlic Jr. tries to suck everyone into the Dead Zone,[33] but ends up in there himself again when Gohan blasts Planet Makyō and causes it to explode.[34]

Artificial Human / Cell arc

After a short period of peace, those on Earth who can sense ki suddenly notice two immensely powerful beings approaching the planet. They recognize one of them as being Freeza, who has returned in cybernetic form alongside his father.[29] Piccolo and the others despair, as Goku has not returned yet, but Freeza and his father are quickly destroyed by a mysterious young man who also seems to be a Super Saiyan.[35] He greets everyone and accurately predicts that Goku will be arriving within a few hours.[36] Goku and the young man go off to talk in private, but Piccolo's hearing is good enough to overhear everything they say. The young man is Trunks, the son of Vegeta and a time traveler from twenty years in the future. He has come to the past with a warning that deadly Artificial Humans, even more powerful than Super Saiyans, will attack in three years. He also predicts that Goku will soon succumb to a heart virus, and has come to give him medication against that. He hopes that if Goku survives, that will be enough to turn the tide against the Artifical Humans.[37]

Piccolo trains with Goku and Gohan for three years, after which they go face off against Artificial Humans No. 19 and No. 20. As Goku fights No. 19, however, he falls sick with the heart virus, much later than Trunks predicted.[38] He gets taken back home and Piccolo and the others fight in his stead. They gain the upper hand, but Trunks shows up with a shocking message — he does not recognize these Artificial Humans.[39] No. 20 turns out to be Doctor Gero, the creator of the Artificial Humans, and runs off to his laboratory to awaken No. 17 and No. 18. Trunks confirms that these are the ones that have been terrorizing his world.[40] Piccolo and the others stand no chance against them, but do not get killed.[41] Despairing at the power difference, Piccolo seeks out God in order to recombine with him.[42]

God initially thinks there is no need, as these Artificial Humans do not seem as bloodthirsty as the ones Trunks knows, but then he spots a terrifying monster walking around on Earth. The two merge and become a Namekian who has long forgotten his true name.[43] The Namekian confronts the monster and learns it is a being called Cell, another creation of Doctor Gero's. He has come from the future, having stolen Trunks' time machine, to seek out Artificial Humans No. 17 and No. 18. He wants to absorb them in order to reach his complete, "perfect", form.[44] He runs away and hides his ki so no one can find him.[45] Goku recovers and calls the Namekian "Kamiccolo",[b] to which the latter replies he prefers to keep the name Piccolo. Goku goes off with Gohan, Trunks and Vegeta to train in the Room of Spirit and Time at God's Temple, while Piccolo and the others continue to hunt down Cell. While trying to track him down, they are suddenly visited by the Artificial Humans. They seek Goku, but Piccolo will not give up his location and fights No. 17.[46] They are evenly matched, although the latter has the benefit of limitless energy. Cell, having powered up to the point that Piccolo cannot stand up to him anymore, finds them.[47] He beats Piccolo to near-death[48] and absorbs No. 17,[49] but No. 18 manages to escape.

Goku helps Piccolo and takes him to God's Temple, where Vegeta and Trunks emerge from the Room of Spirit and Time.[50] They have done a year's worth of training in one day, and go off to fight Cell. Having merged with God, Piccolo can now see what is happening on Earth when he looks down from God's Temple.[51] He witnesses Vegeta giving in to his Saiyan lust for battle and letting Cell absorb No. 18,[52] and Cell's complete form being too much for Vegeta and Trunks to handle. Cell spares them, however, saying he will hold a martial arts competition called the Cell Games.[53] Piccolo takes his own turn in the Room of Spirit and Time in preparation, and though Goku notices his improvement, both he and Piccolo realize it will not make much difference.[54] The Cell Games begin and Goku challenges Cell,[55] but ends up forfeiting the match and asking Gohan to fight in his stead.[56] Piccolo protests, not wishing to see Gohan get hurt or killed, but Goku argues that Gohan's hidden power is the key to defeating Cell.[57] Cell is amused and tries to provoke Gohan into revealing this hidden power by sending Cell Juniors after Piccolo, Goku and the others.[58] Eventually, enough is enough and Gohan snaps, reaching the Super Saiyan 2 state and overpowering Cell.[59] Growing desperate, Cell blows himself up intending to take everyone down with him, but Goku teleports Cell to Kaiō's Planet at the last second.[60] Goku and Kaiō die, but Cell survives, regenerates, and returns to Earth.[61] After a Kamehameha versus Kamehameha clash with Gohan, Cell gets destroyed.[62][c] Goku communicates from the afterlife that he does not wish to be revived, arguing that his presence makes Earth a target for bad guys.[64]

Majin Boo arc

Seven years of peace pass, and one day Gohan invites Piccolo to the 25th Tenka'ichi Budōkai. Goku has been given special permission to come back for that one day, so everyone gathers for the competition.[65] Piccolo is unnerved by his mysterious opponent, however, and forfeits his match.[66] The stranger turns out to be the Kaiōshin, a deity higher in rank even than the Dai-Kaiō above the four Kaiō.[67] He has come to the tournament to foil the plans of the sorcerer Bobbidi, who is having two of his minions participate. When Gohan transforms into his Super Saiyan 2 state, those minions spring into action, drain his energy, and fly off.[68] The Kaiōshin follows them, accompanied by Piccolo and several others. Tracking the minions to Bobbidi's hideout, Piccolo and the others find out that Bobbidi has Dabra, the King of the Demon Realm, under his control.[69] Dabra notices their presence and attacks, spitting at Piccolo with his petrifying saliva and turning him to stone.[70] By the time Piccolo turns back to normal, Bobbidi has achieved his objective of awakening the powerful Majin Boo. Vegeta shows up to challenge Boo, "the one who killed Gohan",[71] but realizes he cannot win and ends up sacrificing his life to blow Boo to bits.[72] Boo can regenerate from the tiniest remaining fragment of himself, however, and survives.[73]

With Gohan and Vegeta gone, and Goku having to return to the afterlife soon, everyone's hopes of beating Boo are pinned on the present-timeline child version of Trunks and Gohan's little brother Son Goten. Goku teaches them the Fusion dance before he departs, trusting Piccolo to continue their training in his absence.[74] While the kids practice combining into Gotenks, Boo befriends a dog and a human who calls himself Mister Satan.[75] Satan actually persuades Boo to stop killing, but when a couple of gunmen shoot Boo's new friends, Boo gets so angry that a bunch of smoke comes out of him and forms into an embodiment of Boo's evil. This evil Boo eats the first Boo and transforms into a more powerful, muscular Boo.[76] This Boo has the ability to sense ki and immediately flies up to God's Temple, to everyone's horror.[77] Boo wants to fight the strong guy Goku promised him would come face him soon, so Piccolo thinks quickly and buys as much time as he can while having Trunks and Goten train in the Room of Spirit and Time.[78] Piccolo takes Boo there, thinking he can trap Boo inside even if Gotenks loses.[79] This does indeed appear to happen, so Piccolo destroys the entrance, but Boo screams in anger so loudly he rips open a hole between dimensions and escapes.[80] Gotenks was only pretending to lose for dramatic effect, however, and reveals his Super Saiyan 3 form.[81] He continues to fight Boo, but just before he can deliver the final blow, his fusion time runs out.[82]

At that point a powered-up Gohan returns — he had not been killed, but was taken to the Kaiōshin Realm for training.[83] He beats up Boo until the latter demands to fight the kids again. Piccolo and Gohan are suspicious, but Gotenks eagerly steps up. Boo takes that opportunity to absorb him for a power boost, as well as Piccolo for an intelligence boost.[84] Piccolo spends some time unconscious within Boo's body, is freed,[85] but perishes when Boo blows up the Earth.[86] Goku and Vegeta, having returned to the world of the living, fight Boo in the Kaiōshin Realm.[87] Vegeta comes up with a plan to wish back the Earth and its inhabitants — including Piccolo — and then has everyone on Earth contribute to a Genki-Dama[88] so that Goku can finish Boo off.[89] Ten years later, Piccolo is a spectator at the 28th Tenka'ichi Budōkai, where Goku fights Oob, the human reincarnation of Boo. Piccolo thinks to himself it has been a long time since he has seen Goku so happy.[90]
