King Cold is a fictional character in the Dragon Ball manga series by Akira Toriyama. King Cold makes his debut in chapter 329, published in the 1991 #28 issue of Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump.

Biography

41 years before the events of Dragon Ball Super: Broly, King Cold comes to Planet Vegeta to introduce his son Freeza to King Vegeta and the other Saiyans. Cold announces his retirement and says Freeza will command his army in his stead from now on. He says that nothing will change, except that Freeza is even more cruel than he is. Freeza eventually ends up destroying Planet Vegeta, bringing the Saiyans to near-extinction.[3]

In Age 762[4], Freeza goes to Planet Namek seeking the wish-granting Dragon Balls in hopes of becoming immortal. Prince Vegeta opposes him, however,[5] alongside a number of people from Earth, one of whom is also a Saiyan. To make matters worse for Freeza, this Saiyan becomes a Super Saiyan of legend and overpowers him.[6] Taking desperate measures, Freeza causes Namek to blow up, but ends up getting caught in the explosion himself. King Cold finds his son on the brink of death among the planet's debris, and helps him recover by having his missing body parts reconstructed in cybernetic form. Upon waking, Freeza tells "Papa" they will go to the Super Saiyan's home world, Planet Earth, in order to exact revenge.[7]

They arrive there three hours before the Super Saiyan is expected to return, and intend to kill the remaining time by slaughtering all the Earthlings first.[8] It is then that one such Earthling shows up and says he has come to kill them. Assuming this stranger is nothing special, Freeza tells one of his henchmen to get rid of him. The henchman gets defeated in one hit, though, and when the other soldiers rush in, the stranger takes out his sword and slices through them all in the blink of an eye. Freeza decides to take matters into his own hands, but then the swordsman reveals Son Goku is not the only Super Saiyan — and transforms into one himself. Freeza fires a blast at him, and when the smoke clears, King Cold thinks the stranger has been destroyed. Then they hear him shout "FREEZA!!!!" as he fires his own blast down at them from atop a cliff. King Cold and Freeza both jump into the air to dodge it, but when they look up, they see the stranger coming down on them with his sword.[9] He slices Freeza into pieces before vaporizing him.

King Cold and the swordsman land on the ground, and Cold asks him if he would like to take Freeza's place as his son and rule the universe together. When the stranger declines, Cold asks to see his sword instead. Inspecting it, he claims the stranger was relying on this weapon and cannot win without it. King Cold swings it down at him, but the stranger effortlessly catches the blade in his hand, and blasts Cold through the abdomen. His body crashes against a rocky wall, and the stranger blows him up for good measure.[10] The stranger turns out to be a time traveler from a timeline in which Freeza and King Cold were killed by Son Goku instead, who teleported to Earth to get there ahead of his expected arrival time.[11]

After Freeza is brought back to life in Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F', he declines Sorbet's suggestion of reviving King Cold as well, saying he always acted too self-important. When Sorbet says Son Goku has become much stronger and even defeated Majin Boo, Freeza mentions that King Cold warned him never to mess with Majin Boo or the God of Destruction Beerus.[12]
