Shin is a fictional character in the Dragon Ball manga series by Akira Toriyama. Shin makes his debut in chapter 437, published in the 1993 #40 issue of Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump.

Biography

Name

Shin's official profile for the Universe Survival arc.

Shin introduces himself as such when he first appears,[2] but in subsequent chapters this name is understood to be a shorter version of his title, Kaiōshin (界王神), where the shin portion (神) uses the same kanji that is used for kami (God). The Kaiō are rulers (王 ō) of the worlds (界 kai) in their respective cardinal galaxies, and the Kaiōshin rule over the Kaiō.

In Dragon Ball Super, it is revealed that Shin is the Kaiōshin of Universe 7 only, and shares equal power in his universe with a Hakaishin (破壊神 "God of Destruction"). There are twelve universes and twelve Kaiōshin, each with their own alias that is somehow related to godhood or being. Toei Animation's promotional material for the Universe Survival arc marks the first time Shin is called anything other than Kaiōshin or Kaiōshin-sama since he was first credited as Kaiōshin in Dragon Ball Z Episode 250.[3]

In Dragon Ball Daima, it is revealed that Shin's original name—his demon name—is Nahare (ナハレ), and that he and the other Glind who left the Demon Realm to rule over the outside world chose different names to use there.[a]

Notes

  1. ↑ Panzy recognizes "Shin" as a non-demonic name, and asks him what his real name is. It's thereafter referred to as his real name, and he claims to have no preference on what his companions call him.[1]
