Porunga is a fictional character in the Dragon Ball franchise. He first appears as the dragon of Planet Namek in Dragon Ball Chapter 292, which went on sale in the 1990 #42 issue of Weekly Shōnen Jump on 18 September 1990.
Overview
It is unknown who originally created Porunga, but the ancient Namekians are said to have chipped off small pieces of the Super Dragon Balls in order to create their own. When Porunga was introduced to the story, he was tied to the then-current Eldest Namekian, the lone survivor of the climate cataclysm on Planet Namek and the father of all Namekians living on the planet at the time Freeza destroyed it. When he died, his Dragon Balls and Porunga were passed on to Muri, the eldest of his children. Porunga's rules and their evolution are detailed below.

Biography
Name
"Porunga" is Namekian for "God of dreams" in-universe. When Akira Toriyama was asked whether it had any other meaning, he could not remember.[1]
I don't remember this one either, but it was probably just a completely random name.
— Akira Toriyama (Dragon Ball Forever)
Porunga is also sometimes called "Shenlong", which is the Chinese reading of 神龍 (シェンロン Shenron), meaning "dragon god". Porunga is sometimes also called "the real Shenlong"[2] or "Super Shenlong",[3][4][5] not to be confused with the Super Shenlong of the Super Dragon Balls.[6][7]

Performance
In Dragon Ball Z, Porunga is voiced by Junpei Takiguchi, who also voiced the Eldest Namekian and Uranai Baba. Porunga was recast for Dragon Ball Kai, shortly before Takiguchi's death in 2011; Daisuke Gōri handled the role in episode 36, and Ryūzaburō Ōtomo took over the role beginning with episode 51. Ōtomo had previously voiced the Six-Star Dragon in Dragon Ball GT, and he went on to take over the role of Shenlong after the death of Kenji Utsumi in 2013.
In the Funimation English dub, Porunga has always been voiced by Christopher Sabat, who also voices Shenlong and all of the other dragons.
