The Demon King Piccolo is a fictional character in the Dragon Ball manga series by Akira Toriyama. The Demon King Piccolo makes his debut in chapter 135, published in the 1987 #35 issue of Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump.

Biography

Before the offspring of the Namekian Katatz is allowed to take up the position of God of Earth, he must purify his heart and get rid of the evil that is dwelling deep within. When he finally manages to expel that evil, it takes the form of the Demon King Piccolo.[3] Piccolo goes on to terrorize the Earth, until a martial artist named Mutaito uses the Mafūba technique to seal Piccolo away inside an electric rice cooker. A young apprentice of Mutaito's, who becomes known as the Turtle Hermit later in life, sinks this sealed rice cooker to the bottom of the ocean.

Hundreds of years later,[a] the rice cooker is found and opened by the Pilaf Gang, releasing the Demon King Piccolo back into the world. Pilaf hopes that the Demon King will bestow part of the world upon him once it has been conquered, and tells him about the wish-granting Dragon Balls. Piccolo makes it his mission to wish for eternal youth, and to kill all the martial artists in the world so that the Mafūba can never be used against him again. In order to achieve these ambitions, Piccolo gives birth to various demonic creatures by producing eggs from his mouth. Piano serves him as his right-hand man, and Tambourine heads over to the Tenka'ichi Budōkai grounds to steal the list of registered contestants, as well as the Dragon Ball that happens to be there.[4] Piccolo orders Tambourine to hunt down all the martial artists on that list, and has the newly-spawned Cymbal go after the remaining Dragon Balls.[5]

Soon, however, Piccolo feels a sudden intense pain and knows instinctively that Cymbal has been killed.[6] When Tambourine also gets killed while investigating what happened,[7] Piccolo himself goes after the mysterious demon slayer. It turns out to be a boy named Son Goku, who has foiled Pilaf's plans multiple times in the past. Piccolo defeats him easily, however, and takes the boy's Dragon Ball from his lifeless body.[8] According to the Dragon Ball radar that Pilaf provided for Piccolo, the remaining five Dragon Balls have been gathered by someone else. When Piccolo and his crew fly their airship over to the location indicated on the radar, they meet an old man.[9] It is the Turtle Hermit, whose master was Mutaito. He knows the Mafūba as well and attempts to seal Piccolo into a rice cooker with it, but misses and loses his life.[10] Piccolo rejoices and summons Shenlong, when suddenly Chiaotzu runs out from his hiding spot and begins to shout out a wish to erase the Demon King from this world. Piccolo kills him before he can finish, however, and finally gets his wish.[11] Shenlong says his farewells, but Piccolo destroys him to ensure no one can use the Dragon Balls ever again.

Having regained his youth, Piccolo sets his sights on world domination. The Pilaf Gang hope they will finally get to rule part of the world too, but Piccolo has no more use for them and kicks them off the airship.[12] He heads to King Castle to overthrow the monarch of the world, where the guards offer futile resistance[13] and Piccolo forces the King to submit to him on a live television broadcast.[14] Piccolo announces to the world that he is the new king, and organizes a lottery. Every year on 09 May, which he dubs "Piccolo Day",[b] he will personally destroy one of the 43 districts of the world. He assures everyone that his Bakuretsu-Makōhō will provide an instant, painless death. This year's lottery "winner" is West City, but Tenshinhan arrives at King Castle to challenge the Demon King before he can depart. Piccolo spawns another demonic creature, Drum, to fight in his stead.[15] Drum has no trouble against Tenshinhan and is about to kill him, when Son Goku appears and effortlessly kills Drum instead.[16]

Piccolo is astonished to see Goku still alive and so much stronger than before, but Piccolo himself has powered up too and claims it will take only five seconds for the boy to die.[c] Five seconds later, however, Piccolo has been thrown into a tower and Goku is still standing.[17] Goku says Piccolo killed a lot of people he cared about, and he will make him pay. He sends Piccolo flying into Piano, killing the latter.[18] During a long battle, Piccolo blows up King Castle along with the rest of the city[19] and manages to injure several of Goku's limbs.[20] Goku gambles everything on his remaining arm, however, and launches himself straight through Piccolo's body. The Demon King explodes, but not before spitting out one final egg and imparting a mission of revenge upon this last child of his. The egg hatches somewhere out in the wilderness, and Piccolo's reincarnation is born.[21]

Notes

  1. The Turtle Hermit is revealed to be over 300 years old in Dragon Ball Chapter 88.
  2. In the real world, May 9th was officially recognized as "Goku Day" in 2015.
  3. Piccolo holds up five fingers for this, although he is usually drawn with four fingers per hand. A note in the margins below the panel suggests this was a deliberate "mistake".
