Tenshinhan is a fictional character in the Dragon Ball manga series by Akira Toriyama. Tenshinhan makes his debut in Chapter 113, published in the 1987 #13 issue of Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump.

Biography

Tenshinhan's introduction differs between the manga and anime. In a story exclusive to the anime, Tenshinhan and Chiaotzu work together with a creature called Inoshikachō. They have it rampage through villages and then pretend to rescue said villages from it in exchange for money. Son Goku comes along and uncovers the truth, however.[5]

22nd Tenka'ichi Budōkai arc

In the manga, Tenshinhan and Chiaotzu are first introduced at the 22nd Tenka'ichi Budōkai, as students of the Crane Hermit. Having heard that the Turtle Hermit's students performed well at the previous Tenka'ichi Budōkai, the Crane Hermit wants to prove his superiority to his rival.[6] The Turtle and Crane students clash several times throughout the tournament, with Tenshinhan knocking Yamcha unconscious before deliberately breaking his leg,[7] and Kuririn outwitting Chiaotzu.[8] Goku recognizes the Crane School's Dodonpa technique from when he fought and allegedly killed Tao Pai-pai, the world's deadliest assassin and the Crane Hermit's younger brother. Tenshinhan is shocked that Tao Pai-pai was killed and relays this news to his master, who responds by ordering his students to kill the Turtle Hermit's students in revenge.[9]

Tenshinhan's next match pits him against the Turtle Hermit himself, however, who gradually persuades Tenshinhan to live his life in a more honorable way. The Turtle Hermit even ends up forfeiting the match, baffling the prideful Tenshinhan. Being someone who always seeks to dominate and humiliate his opponents, he cannot believe that any martial artist would ever admit to their own inferiority.[10] Goku is Tenshinhan's opponent in the final match, and they keep outdoing each other. When the Crane Hermit interferes by having Chiaotzu use his psychic powers to paralyze Goku, Tenshinhan yells at him to stop. He no longer approves of his master's dishonorable way of doing things, and wants to win the match with his own strength. The Crane Hermit gets furious and threatens to kill Chiaotzu, but the Turtle Hermit blasts him far away with a Kamehameha, allowing Tenshinhan and Goku to proceed with their match.[11] Tenshinhan unleashes the Kikōhō, a devastating technique that shortens the user's lifespan if it does not outright kill them, to blow up the ring. Whoever touches the ground first now will be considered out of bounds and lose the match, but Tenshinhan can freely float in the air with his Bukūjutsu technique.[12] In a last-ditch effort, Goku propels himself into Tenshinhan to knock him unconscious, but still ends up hitting the ground first. Tenshinhan is the champion of the 22nd Tenka'ichi Budōkai.

Demon King Piccolo arc

Feeling humbled, Tenshinhan begs Yamcha's forgiveness and offers Goku half of the prize money. Goku declines because he does not understand how to use money, but is missing some of his possessions. While Kuririn goes off to fetch them, a friend of Goku's called Lunch says she has fallen in love with Tenshinhan's "wildness", but he does not seem inclined to return the feeling. Suddenly, everyone hears Kuririn scream. They find his dead body beside the Tenka'ichi Budōkai Ringside Announcer, who says a monster killed Kuririn.[13] This monster turns out to be an underling of the Demon King Piccolo, who had been sealed away long ago by the Turtle and Crane Hermits' master, Mutaito. Goku chases after the monster in a blind rage[14] and does not return.[15] Tenshinhan, Chiaotzu and the Turtle Hermit go around seeking the wish-granting Dragon Balls in order to wish for the Demon King's destruction,[16] but he holds some of the Dragon Balls himself. The Turtle Hermit attempts to seal him into a rice cooker with the Mafūba technique that Mutaito used, but fails and loses his life.[17] Chiaotzu tries to shout out a wish to Shenlong before Piccolo can, but also gets killed. Piccolo gets his wish instead, regaining the full power of his youth,[18] and destroys Shenlong for good measure.[19] Determined to take Piccolo down, Tenshinhan practices the Mafūba,[20] but the rice cooker gets cracked and becomes unusable. Tenshinhan resorts to fighting Piccolo head on, but has to get through an underling called Drum first.[21] When Tenshinhan is about to get killed, Goku suddenly shows up and kills Drum.[22] Having powered up considerably, Goku fights Piccolo and eventually destroys him.[23] Seeking a way to bring Piccolo's victims back to life, Goku meets with God, the creator of the Dragon Balls, who restores Shenlong and grants Goku's wish.[24]

23rd Tenka'ichi Budōkai arc

Three years later, everyone gathers for the 23rd Tenka'ichi Budōkai.[25] In the preliminaries, Chiaotzu gets taken out by Tao Pai-pai, who has returned from the brink of death as a cyborg.[26] Tenshinhan faces him in the first quarter-final and is far stronger, but does not wish to humiliate his former master's brother. When Tao Pai-pai reveals a hidden blade and goes for the kill, Tenshinhan grows furious that the assassin has entirely lost the pride of a martial artist, and knocks him out.[27] In the semi-finals, Tenshinhan has a rematch with Goku, who has been training under God. They seem fairly evenly matched, until Goku reveals he has been wearing weighted clothing. Without those slowing him down, not even Tenshinhan's three eyes can keep up with his speed.[28] Tenshinhan has a way to give himself twelve eyes, however; the Shishin no Ken technique allows him to split himself into four bodies. He corners Goku into taking a hit, but Goku discovers two weak points in Tenshinhan's new technique.[29] The first is Tenshinhan's overreliance on his eyes; Goku uses the Taiyō-Ken, a move Tenshinhan used in the previous tournament, to blind him. The second weakness is that each of the four Tenshinhans possesses only one-fourth of the original's strength. Before they can do anything, Goku knocks all four of them out of bounds.[30]

The next semi-final pits two mysterious contestants against each other,[31] one of whom Tenshinhan suspects to be a surviving underling of Piccolo's.[26] This actually turns out to be the reincarnation of Piccolo himself, who spat out an egg before he died. His opponent "Shen" is really God in disguise,[32] whose attempt to use the Mafūba backfires on him when Piccolo counters it. God gets sealed into a bottle[33] that Piccolo promptly swallows.[32] In the final match, Goku manages to retrieve the bottle and throws it to Tenshinhan, who opens it to release God.[34] When Piccolo unleashes an attack that destroys everything in the vicinity, Tenshinhan blasts a hole in the ground with the Kikōhō so that the remaining spectators can take cover. Goku takes the attack head on[35] and continues to fight until he manages to knock Piccolo out of bounds and win the 23rd Tenka'ichi Budōkai.[36]

Saiyan and Freeza arcs

Five years later, Tenshinhan learns that Goku has died fighting his alien brother,[37] a Saiyan who came to Earth to recruit him for nefarious reasons.[38] Goku can be brought back to life, but two even more powerful Saiyans are headed for Earth. God trains Tenshinhan and several other Earthlings in preparation,[39] but it is not enough. Yamcha,[40] Chiaotzu,[41] Tenshinhan[42] and Piccolo all lose their lives fighting the Saiyans.[43] In the afterlife, they train under Kaiō while Kuririn and Goku's son Gohan attempt to collect Dragon Balls on Piccolo and God's home planet Namek. Kaiō contacts Goku to let him know how his fallen friends are doing, and Goku reveals he is headed to Planet Namek himself because Gohan and the others are met with heavy resistance. Kaiō freaks out when he learns that the extremely powerful Freeza and his men are on Namek too.[44] In the anime, some of them end up fighting Tenshinhan and the others on Kaiō's planet.[45] After a long battle against Freeza, Goku transforms into a Super Saiyan[46] and defeats him.[47] Tenshinhan is impressed by how immensely powerful Goku has become, and dismayed at how vast the gap between them has grown.[48]

Artificial Human / Cell arc

Everyone returns to Earth and Tenshinhan and the others get wished back to life. After a brief period of peace, they notice that Freeza has survived and is on his way to Earth.[49] Another Super Saiyan appears, however, who easily destroys him.[50] This young man named Trunks has come from the future to warn everyone of an imminent threat — two artificial humans created by Doctor Gero will attack in three years, more powerful even than Super Saiyans.[51] Tenshinhan and the others spend those three years training[52] before meeting the threat head on, although Tenshinhan asks Chiaotzu to stay behind.[53] They end up facing more than two artificial humans, though, including one named Cell who seeks to absorb Artificial Humans No. 17 and No. 18 in order to reach his "perfect" form.[54] When he does absorb No. 17 and becomes too powerful for anyone to handle, Tenshinhan manages to stall him by blasting him over and over with the Shin Kikōhō.[55] This drains Tenshinhan's energy to the brink of death, but Goku gets him to safety.[56] Having done even more training, the Super Saiyans fight Cell, but he reaches his "perfect" form[57] and starts toying with everyone. He organizes a tournament he calls the Cell Games,[58] which Tenshinhan attends as a spectator.[59] Goku puts all his faith into Gohan, saying his hidden power will be the key to defeating Cell.[60] Still treating this like a game, Cell tries to provoke Gohan by sending Cell Juniors after his friends, including Tenshinhan.[61] Eventually Gohan snaps,[62] reaches a state beyond Super Saiyan, and destroys all the Cell Juniors.[63] He has a final showdown with Cell and eventually manages to kill him as well.[64]

Majin Boo arc

Everyone parts ways and seven years of peace pass, when one day the sorcerer Bobbidi magically speaks to everyone on Earth. He is looking for three individuals: Piccolo, the present-timeline version of Trunks, and Goku's second son Goten. They got in his way as he worked to awaken the powerful Majin Boo, who turns people into candy and eats them.[65] Bobbidi threatens to keep having Boo do this until those three individuals show themselves.[66] Goku goes to stall them and fights Boo using his new Super Saiyan 3 form. Bobbidi magically lets everyone on Earth, including Tenshinhan, witness this fight in their minds.[67] Goku can only stall for so long and Boo continues to massacre most of the people on Earth, to the point that Tenshinhan himself feels the need to do whatever he can. He comes upon a powered-up Boo fighting a grown-up Gohan, and manages to save Dende, the new God of Earth.[68] He cannot do anything beyond that, though, and quickly gets knocked out.[69] He dies when Boo blows up the entire planet,[70] but it and its inhabitants are soon wished back. Goku is still fighting Boo on a distant world and telepathically calls out to everyone with Kaiō's help, asking them to contribute ki to his Genki-Dama.[71] Tenshinhan gladly obliges,[72] and with everyone's help, Goku manages to eradicate Boo.[73]
