Super Saiyan 2 is a further transformation within the Super Saiyan line, typically identifiable by more prominent hair spikes and an electric-like charge around the respective character. The transformation makes its debut as Son Gohan battles Cell.
Name

Spelling
As with similar transformations, the "Super" in "Super Saiyan 2" is written with the kanji 超 (chō), with accompanying furigana of スーパー (sūpā) indicating a pronunciation of the English word "super" rather than a native Japanese reading.
Naming History
Following its debut in chapter 409 with Son Gohan's transformation battling Cell, what we later know as "Super Saiyan 2" is not actually named as such until chapter 474, where Son Goku demonstrates various stages of transformation in a conversation with Boo. Beginning with regular Super Saiyan, Goku powers up further stating:
そしてさっきみせた超サイヤ人を超えた超サイヤ人。。。超サイヤ人2ってとこかな
This is a Super Saiyan that has surpassed Super Saiyan... Super Saiyan 2, you could call it.
— Son Goku, Dragon Ball chapter 474[1]
In the meantime, official publications had adopted a naming structure — 段階 (dankai) or "Grades" — for the increasing levels of transformations. This structure was based on dialog from Goku in Dragon Ball chapter 387, where he demonstrates the stage Vegeta uses against Cell, going on to state that "one further grade of transformation is possible", at which point he demonstrates the stage that Trunks uses against Cell.[3]
Of note, the Anime Comic release for the Trunks television special includes a supplementary "Super Saiyan Evolution Theory Timetable" column recapping the various Super Saiyan transformations in existence up to the point of its publication in May 1993. The "Grades" naming structure is present here, with "Grade II" and "Grade III" referring to the forms showcased by Vegeta and Trunks, respectively (and would be later reinforced by inclusions in guides such as Dragon Ball Daizenshuu 2: Story Guide and Dragon Ball GT: Perfect File Volume 1). With no other names in the series itself to use, the column extrapolates this "Grade" naming structure further, naming the "at ease" state that Goku and Gohan adopt leading up to the Cell Games as "Super Saiyan Grade IV" (later named "Full Power Super Saiyan"), and the transformation Gohan showcases against Cell as "Grade V".
Attributes
Super Saiyan 2 is a powered-up variation of the initial Super Saiyan transformation[4], which can be reached through anger or through harsh training.[5] Super Saiyan 2 surpasses the original in all ways,[5] including power and speed.[6]
Differences in appearance from the initial Super Saiyan transformation are less distinct than with others, but include sparks in the aura and hair on the head standing up even straighter than before,[5][7][6][2] and one's personality becomes more aggressive.[2][7]
Super Saiyan 2 sports double the power of Super Saiyan.[8] Dragon Ball Daizenshuu 2: Story Guide notes that Gohan's strength as Super Saiyan 2, "...blows away the ground with just a kick"[9], while the aforementioned column in the Anime Comic release for the Trunks television special notes the form's power, "...is enough to push back even Cell's energy bullet, which had enough force to blow away the Solar System!"[2]
Super Saiyan 2 does not seem to provide a rapid increase; for Son Goku in particular, once he reaches Super Saiyan 3, he often skips over 2 directly into 3.[6]

| Son Goku | Dragon Ball Chapter 458 Dragon Ball Z Episode 229 |
During Goku's battle with Yakon (where he amps up his transformation and "light" to burst said foe), Vegeta notes that Goku has "surpassed the Super Saiyan wall".[13] Vegeta comments "As I'd expect" when Goku transforms into Super Saiyan 2 in their subsequent battle.[14]
| Vegeta | Dragon Ball Chapter 459 Dragon Ball Z Episode 229 |
Vegeta awakens to Super Saiyan 2 as one of the fruits of his training between the Cell Games and 25th Tenka'ichi Budōkai,[8] with its series debut coming during his battle with Son Goku after Bobbidi has charmed him.[15]
| Gotenks | Dragon Ball Chapter 493 | Both Dragon Ball Daizenshuu 7: Dragon Ball Large Encyclopedia and Dragon Ball GT: Perfect File Volume 1 list Gotenks as a user of / having reached Super Saiyan 2. Two panels in Dragon Ball manga chapter 493 showcases Gotenks seemingly in between Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan 3, not yet with the long hair, but with the requisite electric sparks in his aura.[10] | |
| Future Trunks | Dragon Ball Super Episode 49 | In the Dragon Ball Super television series, Trunks powers-up to Super Saiyan 2 as he and Son Goku size each other up. Goku specifically comments how Trunks has reached Super Saiyan 2 by name.[16] While the first Dragon Ball Z video game by Dimps used "Super Trunks" to refer to the characters' Super Saiyan Grade III transformation, both Dragon Ball Z 2 and Dragon Ball Z 3 erroneously refer to this same stage as "Super Saiyan 2".[12] This error is likewise present in the game's English localization. | |
| Caulifla | Dragon Ball Super Episode 93 | In the Dragon Ball Super television series, Caulifla initially reaches Super Saiyan 2 following Kale's berserker rampage and attack on Cabba.[17] Later, during the Tournament of Power, Caulifla receives an impromptu tutorial from Son Goku on how to reach Super Saiyan 2 of her own accord, having displayed Super Saiyan Grade III and suffering a defeat.[18] | |
| Cabba | Dragon Ball Super Episode 112 | TBD | |
| Kafla | Dragon Ball Super Episode 116 | TBD | |

Production
In a "Special Interview" with Shueisha's V-Jump magazine in March 2013 (in support of that month's theatrical debut of Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods), original author Akira Toriyama commented that he thought the form with the long hair was Super Saiyan 2 (when in actuality it is Super Saiyan 3).[19]
